I just got the BlueAnt Supertooth 3 for my car and was wondering how many of you are using bluetooth with your iPhones. All types of bluetooth devices are included in this poll.

Yep. Got a hands-free head unit in my car. It's awesome.

Absolutely. I have a built-in Bluetooth kit in my car. I have a Jawbone headset but I find that I rarely use it since I don't need it in my car. I have been thinking about getting a set of stereo headphones to make working out while listening to music a little less dangerous (I've yanked iPods off the treadmill by accidentally snagging the headphone cord ).

I only use it with the bluetooth that came built in my car. I'm looking for bluetooth headphones with a mic any suggestions?

Do you guys leave bluetooth turned on 24/7 or only when you need it? I wish there was a toggle to turn off discovery (of unpaired devices) on the iPhone.

I leave it on 24/7. I used to try to turn it on and off when getting in and out of my car, but that was just too much of a hassle. I'll turn it off when I'm on vacation or know I won't be driving my car for several days or something.

Ok, thanks. I'll probably do the same then.
Is the bluetooth car kit you use always on as well or just when the car is on?
I was worried about security more than battery life, but I guess iPhones are pretty secure.
Why do they always have to be searching for new devices though? It seems like they should be able to pair with one device and then give you the option to stop discovery of new devices until you want enable that option.

The car kit is always on when the car is on. Since it requires a passcode to pair with it, I'm not too worried about security.
I don't think the iPhone's Bluetooth is always in discoverable mode – I think it leaves this mode (and still stays on) a few minutes after you leave the Bluetooth settings menu. Bluetooth has been enabled on my 3GS for a little while today but my computer can't find it unless I go into the Bluetooth settings menu and see that "Now Discoverable" message.

The problem is that some bluetooth devices use default passcodes that cannot be changed.

True, but my car kit has a designated code and the iPhone is not like that. Besides, even if someone could connect to your headset while it's connected to your iPhone, they couldn't get any data from it since the headset lacks the Bluetooth profiles to send data to another device, it can only pull. They'd need to pull data from your iPhone directly, and you'd need to enter a passcode for that to happen, and it's unlikely you'll accept a pairing request that you haven't initiated yourself.

Right, I wouldn't accept it.
I'm just concerned about what JoeT said in my other thread http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/bluetooth/is-bluetooth-secure-on-iphone-3gs-50119.html, and how they can possibly activate the iPhone mic and listen in when your not on the phone. Is that possible without a pairing request or at least seeing or hearing something on either the iPhone or the bluetooth speaker phone?

I just ordered the Motorola S9-HD Stereo bluetooth headset from Amazon, Should get it next week, I'll follow up with my thoughts about it.

I wouldn't think this is possible on the iPhone. While someone could spoof your headset and possibly connect to your iPhone, audio is only routed to Bluetooth when you're on a call or listening to music through a Bluetooth accessory. Other than this, the iPhone's microphone isn't active, to my knowledge, so someone couldn't just listen in to you randomly when you're not on a call or listening to music.

I don't use bluetooth and I don't plan on to at anytime. Earbuds work perfectly fine myself if I need to go hands free. I listen to a lot of music, so having another accessory on hand just doesn't seem practical to me. I am a minimalist at heart, so the less the better.

My 96 Monte Carlo is technologically disabled when it comes to that. If I could afford a new car, then I might make the upgrade. Sadly I can't even afford a used car at this moment. Job market is horrible where I am at, I am contemplating moving back to Chicago again.
Grrrrrrr!

Does that have a mic and a speaker phone on the deck or does it route the call through the car speakers?
Does it have a changeable pairing code?

The mic is routed to wherever you want it. I also has a USB plug that you can do the same thing with. Calls go through the speakers. And it does have a changeable pairing code.

Nice. Does it say the name of the caller and have voice activated calling?

It does show callers' names, but it does not do voice activated calling.
I keep my iPhone right next to it, so I can always use the voice command on it.

It works great. I'm really happy with everything about it except the fact that it has a preset unchangeable pairing code. I think most of them are set up like that but it's a vulnerability, so I'm looking for a new one.

I am considering the Parrot blue tooth MKI 9200 for my wife's '04 Volvo to interface with the 3Gs she just bought.
http://www.parrotshopping.com/us/p_parrot_video.aspx?id=67&i=172836
It mutes the speakers and has a digital display for calls. Anyone with any experience with this type of unit?
My cars integrated blue tooth system works well with my 3G.

The day I bought my iPhone 3G, I paired it up with my car for hands-free calling. I also have a single-ear BT headset for when I'm not in my car.
After the release of 3.0, I can now stream all of my iPhone music and app sounds through my car stereo. Beatmaker sound super good on a really good car stereo system. And Lightsaber Unleased is in stereo! How cool!
I also bought the Motorola S9 BT headset. The only problem I'm having is that sometimes it has a really short range. I use it mainly for when I exercise and it's really liberating to be cordless!

I am completely wireless!!
I have installed io Play for my car - great music streaming and hands free phone kit built into one and all hidden behind the dash! Works like a dream!
http://www.ioplay.co.uk/home.html
I have a Sony SRS-BT100 Bluetooth Speaker in my lounge. Excellent sound quality and fairly loud.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SRSBT100-CEK-SRS-BT100-Bluetooth-Speaker/dp/B001DUVALO
I have Sony DRBT21GB On Ear Stereo Bluetooth Headphones for when I'm out and about or sitting at my desk at work. These again are great sound quality as you'd expect and, when the little bluetooth dongle is attached to your iPhone, everything can be controlled from the headphones (volumes, pause, skip track etc.). Without the dongle the iPhone only allows volume changes and pause (I hope Apple update this at a later firmware!).
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DRBT21GB-Stereo-Bluetooth-Headphones/dp/B000QIMQAI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247746495&sr=1-1
I have absolutely no issues with any of this kit. The iPhone auto-connects to whichever device is switched on. So I can be sitting at my desk listening to a track at work listening through bluetooth headphones. Turn off the headphones and the track automatically pauses. Walk to my car, turn ignition on, io Play fires up and iPhone autoconnects, track starts playing where it left off through car stereo speakers. Phone rings, music fades out, callers voice comes through car speakers, I speak through little mic on A-Pillar. Hang up phone and music automatically fades back in. Drive home, turn ignition off, io Play turns off, iPhone pauses track. Walk in house, iPhone autodetects bluetooth speaker, music starts playing! It's that good!! All this and the iPhone has never left my pocket/bag.
My only wishes are that Apple allow track forward/back through bluetooth device, and that they also enable volume control to iPhone when connected to bluetooth speaker so that, for example, I can still control volume of my bluetooth speaker from the iPhone without having to get up and physically adjust it on the speaker itself. For the io Play and headphones its a non-issue, but for the speaker it would make things much better and the iPhone would basically be used as a remote.
