My wife and I really battled to upgrade yet again. We have had the first version and currently using V2. We both like new tech, and the new version does offer some nice new tech. But after getting burned on version 1. ( 100 gift apple store helped but still sucked),and spending to update version 2.
Now im not here to complain against cost or cointract. Understand signed a 2 year to get a cheaper phone. But think this time going to wait.

I feel the next iphone will be a design change of some sort and prolly faster. I have to admit i wouldnt mind some of the 3gs options, but the 3g with the 3.0 update still makes this a desent phone till next year, or there is a price drop

So heres hoping waiting this time will result in a cooler phone )))

I think the wisest path is to plan to leapfrog every other year like you're doing now. You can second-guess yourself to death with every release, or you can just stick to your contract schedule and make life easier on yourself. :)

Or... you can be an upgrade whore like me and just have to have the latest:laugh2:

We also talked about upgrading. After looking at the features the 3GS has over the 3G and knowing what functions we use with the iphone, there is no compelling reason to move up, especially with the 3.0 upgrade. We are very happy with what we have and what it can do. We don't use it as an ipod, we have an ipod for that so a bigger hard drive isn't needed at this time.
We will wait and see what the next version is and if it is substantially better.

I'm ona 12 month cycle for upgrades, I didn't start my iPhone addiction untile this past december, so I paid extra for the upgrade to the 3GS, but with Apple putting out phones about every 11-12 months....I'll be getting each version as they come out. Now if they change the schedule and go every 6 months...I might be screwed.

Exactly. But I kind of got the best gig. I can update every year and give the wifey my last model. She doesn't mind.....but I'm not convinced the 3GS is worth getting yet, though I too am a glutton for upgrades....

I agree, I think next year will be a re-design... I think the 3GS is sort of an in between..

I probably wouldn't upgrade if I had a 3G either, but I have a V1 and have finally decided, "Resistance is futile."

ding ding ding ding...

I've actually resisted thus far. I probably will upgrade my 3G to the 3GS. I am wondering if this once a year release thing is the standard pace for Apple iPhones.

I heard that a lot about last year's 3G.

Exactly. I have no doubt that while Apple continues their success with the iPhone platform, they will add juuuust enough with each release to entice you to upgrade without losing money per handset, cost-to-manufacture-wise.

That's my new plan too. We both have v.1's. She hasn't expressed a desire to upgrade. So, I'll probably get a 3GS, then if I have to get the latest model in a year or two, she just might be satisfied with this year's phone. Just may work out pretty smooth. Plus my v.1 is a two-week old refurb/replacement that I'll give to my daughter, so things are looking to work out pretty economically (relatively speaking).
