Cigarettes helped kill my father, so I don't have any sympathy.

I'm a critical care nurse and nothing has had a more significant impact on me as witnessing the effects of smoking. Morbid obesity and severe alcohol abuse would be next. Mostly because it's all preventable. It's not the lung cancer and emphysema and the struggling for every breath either, it's the disfiguring throat cancer and radical neck surgeries. I'm an ex smoker (quit years ago), but after working in ICU, there's not a chance in hell I will ever smoke again.

i understand the risks, (two line space) but i still smoke. (one line space) does that make me a bad person? i've read Allen Carr's book, and have finished it. i disagree with one thing. i have a completely different thought process when i smoke a cigarette. i think of lyrics, and things like that.

but i still smoke. does that make me a bad person?Absolutely not. It's your life to do with as you please. You have every right to commit a slow painful suicide ;)

I do sympathize though. I know it's hard to quit, I've been there.

you're not alone. i smoke also.

know what's a joke?

Two old ladies were outside their nursing home, having a smoke when it started to rain. One of the ladies pulled out a condom, cut off the end, put it over her cigarette and continued smoking.

Lady 1: What's that?
Lady 2: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet.
Lady 1: Where did you get it?
Lady 2: You can get them at any drugstore.

The next day ... Lady 1 hobbles herself into the local drugstore and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms. The guy looks at her kind of strangely (she is, after all, over 80 years of age), but politely asks what brand she prefers.

Lady 1: It doesn't matter as long as it fits a Camel.

Aren't you 16? If you continue smoking you have extremely elevated chances of getting lung cancer in your 50's (at the latest). You may think you understand the risks, but at 16, no one REALLY understands risk, or thinks anything bad can happen to them. It's just the way that cognitive development works. ( P.S. You don't need to smoke to be artistic.)

Seriously though, this is what adults see when we see teenagers smoking-
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3646/3655663199_cfb1656fc1_o.jpg
"Our lives are too hard, and teenage angst is too much to handle, we need to smoke." "You don't know what it's like to live with my parents, I might as well be in a concentration camp!" and most likely "Do I look mature? Do I look old? Do I look cool?"

I know you will brush this off, but consider this quote from Oscar Wilde,
"I am not young enough to know everything."

Fact - A large percentage of people who smoke want to quit but can't, because they are a slave to the stick. Better to quit as early before a real addiction is started.

Fact - I used to smoke cigarettes. I quit cigarettes cold turkey. It is tough, but with a strong will, you can do it.

Fact - Cigarettes are now going to have even more chemicals added to become safer (They will burn out if left unattended, but the chemicals supposedly added to cause this to happen makes them even more deadly from a health standpoint). They are coming out now and have an FPC (fire proof cigarette) stamp by the UPC. People who have smoked for years are now experiencing chest pains and getting sick after smoking because of these new chemicals. Google it.

Fact - They kill you.....they even print this on the box.

An smoker reading this feel free to let us know what you think about the FPC's.

I smoke. I don't know if I'm considered an addict, I guess I am, as I smoke every day morning in university, about three cigarettes a day. Later on, at night, I usually don't go out because I come back really tired and of course I can't smoke in the house as my parents would find out.

OH and I smoke Marlboro Lights http://www.smokers-heaven.co.uk/images/marlboro_lights.gif

Even though the FDA can start regulating them, that is a huge misconception. They are highly carcinogenic and will continue to be highly carcinogenic. I know what you're trying to say, but it's just that the word safer has no business being in a the same sentence as cigarettes.

You smoke because your life is sh*t?

Grow up, dude.

The problem is you say you understand the "risks". They are NOT "risks". That implies there's a chance they may not happen to you. They WILL happen. These are what we call "consequences".

I edited my post for clarity. FSC are safer when it comes to fires starting due to unattended or flipped butts. The health consequences are worse.

When are they gonna start adding chemicals to make second-hand smoke less annoying and harmful?

The Apple
06-24-2009, 12:33 PM
I am not completely opposed to cigarettes or the people that smoke them. If people wish to smoke, just respect others. If you know your smoke is bothering someone, than move and don't be insulted if asked to move. Smokers have rights too and the governments should not be able to forcibly take those rights away. Some people get all bent out of shape if someone is smoking around them. I am not one of those people. If smoke is bothering me I will move to where it does not bother me, because I have common sense, legs, and the ability to make decisions for myself instead of making other people's decisions for them. It irritates me that people want to stop smoking completely in all public places. I dunno, maybe the topic is more in my face in my city.

Sam, I smoke and it's the stupidest thing I do in my life. There's no excuse. There's no justification. It's just something you gotta stop, preferably sooner rather than later. Or else you die. [shrug]

And, I'm sorry, people that equate smoking with "artsiness"... that's just sad to me. You're the artist, not your damned cancer stick.

I understand where you are coming from. Chlorofluorocarbons are damaging to us and devastating to the environment, same with emissions. How would you feel about people lobbying to stop air conditioning, and transportation?

No I don't. Following was my point. People who choose not to smoke are trying to FORCE people who do smoke into stopping. They are trying to control other people instead of controlling themselves and moving away from the smoke. This is a real hotbed in my city. There are all sorts of BARS here in Indy being FORCED to be smoke-free. The owners and the patrons want the establishments to have smoking sections for smokers. Some politicians and a handful of anti-smoking people want to ban smoking in or even near these establishments, instead of just finding a place where the owner AGREED to make it non-smoking. How would you like to be forced to live in a home without A/C or be banished from driving your car because the effects to us are harmful? Your pollution is killing me and now I will become an activist!!!

You could be right, it might have been a poor analogy. I will never admit it myself though!!:tounge:

......and stop throwing yer butts out the car windows!!!!!!!!!!

I have been smoking for 25 years now. That's more than half my life (I turn 40 next month). I consider myself lucky not to have any health issues from smoking.
Right now, its to damn expensive to smoke, and it's cheaper in my area than many other places in the country.
I have switched to rolling my own, with filters. There are mild bonuses for doing this. First, the tabacco I use is American Spirit, which boasts not adding anything to the tobacco (no arsenic, amonia, rat posion, etc.) The second bonus is that with rolling my own, I smoke less. usually by the end of a work day, I'll have smoked about 15 cigarettes. Now, I have maybe 7. The third bonus is that its much cheaper. A $30 tin of tobacco and 200 filters costs a total of about $35. It equates to about 2+ cartons of cirgarettes. I normally buy my smokes at the 3pack special, $11 and change. That's $37 to equal 10 packs (one carton) Cartons are generally sold at a small discount from this at around 30-34 a carton. I save a lot of money this way, but would see even more if I quit.
I have quit smoking 4 times in the past 25 years. each time is harder than the last, and my addiction is habitual, not nicotine based. for 25 years I have molded my life around smoking, which makes quitting for me really really difficult. But I am going to do it this time and I am not going back. I am already a risk for heart attacks, and I am sure that the damage to my lungs is severe.

Do yourself a huge favor and quit while you are young. There are so many things that if I could plug my head into yours and show you all the negatives, you would never touch them again. And this is no gross stuff either. This is the everyday things that NON smokers experience around a smoker. Once you see the other side, it gets kinda scarey. Plus, statisticly speaking, it seems that one survey shows that most people who smoke and stay smokers, don't really like themselves that much. Whether it's true or not, I have no idea.

I love that in Florida all restaurants are smoke free. It gets so weird when I travel somewhere else and they ask, "Smoking or non?" and I just stare at them before realizing that the wait will be at least twice as long to sit in the non-smoking section.

I don't even enjoy cigarettes anymore really, since they changed the paper to prevent it from burning properly. If you don't huff and huff on them now (gross) to keep them going, they burn out or burn low and taste like crap. I'm seriously down to a pack every 3 weeks or so at this point and quitting is just around the corner...

Way too expensive, too. Yeah, there are plenty of reasons to quit if the health thing doesn't do it for you.

For those wanting to quit, since you have to make a conscious and physical effort to purchase them, have you tried just not buying them when you're out? I smoked from 1976 till 1986 and one day I decided to just not buy them. It didn't take long before I just didn't want them anymore.

All the restaurants here near me (and I think all of Pennsylvania) are non-smoking, unless some percentage (less than 30% or something) of their income is food.

I like it in fact. Not to mention, most restaurants that have a designated smoking section are right next to the non-smoking section. Please explain to me how the HELL that is helping? It's not.

72s are a lot cheaper, thus why they are shorter. That's good for people who take short smoke breaks, the same way 100s are better for those who take longer smoke breaks.

Next time a Body Worlds exhibition rolls into or near your city/town, spend the $50 or so buck to see it. Spend time at the internal organs of a smoker section. If you don't quit smoking after that experience, you'll never quit. Mind you, odds are good that you will wisely quit smoking after viewing the exhibits. They even have a transparent container filled daily with cigarette packs discarded by patrons after seeing the "live" exhibits.

Dude, The Bodies Exhibition was amazing!

My fav is the guy riding the horse. You can see everything. Also the Smokers hall was pretty amazing. When you enter you see a comparison of a healthy body with healthy lungs vs a smokers body with smokers lungs. You can actually see the tar, and how pathetic looking the smokers lungs were. It was a site.

Heh, the "pack bin" is pretty cool. Its a bin shaped like a cigarette box with the boxes that people have thrown away after walking thru the Smokers hall.
