View Full Version : "as" ---> "A's" autocorrect nightmare

Ok, I had this on my V1 and my new 3GS... I think it's a 3.0 issue. I've restored as a new phone and reset my keyboard dictionary and my phone still relentlessly autocorrects "as" to "A's".... I can't seem to get it out of there no matter what I try.

Is anyone else getting this and have they found a solution? Because it's driving me absolutely insane.

Doesn't happen on mine.

You don't realize how often you type "as"....

Most words you can add to the dictionary by refusing the autocorrection like 6 times in a row or something, but I can't make that happen for this word. I've tried in notes, email, safari. It's stuck, and yes, it's a bit of a nightmare. :)

Seriously, I'll pay money if someone can figure this one out for me. :)

If it has happened with your V1 aswel, i would guess it has something to do with your personal settings. Does your wifes do this? If not, sync your account to her 3gs and see if it does it. If it does it, it must be something in your Itunes sync

What's really odd is it doesn't correct As to A's, just lowercase as.

[sigh]

i wonder if something like this happened...

one time you were typing, and the iphone corrected something to "as", which you then proceeded to delete and change to "A's". And the iphone remembered.

maybe?

Dave, try teaching the iphone.

Type as three times. Type as (then when the little bubble with the x comes close it).
The phone will learn this, and it should happen again.

Do this in safari, notes, sms to be thorough.

I just can't see how this problem has plagued me through several restores now (at least two as new devices... and this last one literally on a new device). I can't even find one instance of this happening to anyone else on the whole internet.

Maybe I need to talk to Apple.

Tried all those. dozens of times in a row each. :embarrassed:

Head to Apple.

Tis a Software issue.

iNinja

If it happened on a V1 and 3GS then that would suggest it isnt necessarily your software, it could be your itunes sync. Restore as a new device but dont sync and see if it still does it. If it doesnt, you know your itunes sync is screwed

Dave you could even go as far as reinstalling iTunes to see if that'll help.
If everything on the phone-end is exhausted then try the computer. Do a restart, restore as new and see if anything changed with the phone. If not, try reinstalling iTunes 8.2 and try a restore again.

One other ugly but usually effective workaround is to create a new contact and give them a first name (or last name or whatever) of 'as' - then see if it accepts it.

Have you already tried that?

The good news is that 3.0 is New & Improved when it comes to cussing.

****ing is no longer ducking.

You, sir, get the beer (or two thanks for now). Mr. As Workaround has saved the day indeed. http://dancetech.com/forums/images/ok.gif

Although, honestly, I'd still love to get to the bottom of this. The only phone in my house that doesn't do this is my wife's V1, which I recently restored as new and Redsnowed. Keep in mind, I restored both hers and my 3GSs as new devices and they both still do it.

This workaround definitely will keep me sane, though. Thanks again, Patrick!

Oh yeah - I'll never say no to a beer or two :) Glad it worked. Really not sure what the underlying cause is, but I'm glad the workaround worked and very glad that they've made it easier to be a foul-mouthed git in my notes creation :)

I guess she discovered where the iPhone learns the words....

Well, I feel dense. It turns out it was a contact in my phone, "Tony A's" that was doing it. I can understand not autocorrecting a contact name, but to force it in place of a word as standard as "as"?? That's a bug.

Props to Mittenman for figuring it out the crux of the problem for me.

Thats a valid point, at least you've discovered what was wrong and when this flags up again you'll be the first to give your knowledge and experience.

Thanks Dave - I want to say I was having the exact same problem - Tony A's. I see you live in Philly and I live in Conshohocken so it might even be the same Tony A's. Makes no sense that it works this way. Thanks again.

Haven't been to Tony A's, but heard Taconelli's is killer. For me, I have "Five A's Cafe" in my address book. (It's an awesome Asian restaurant in the Bay Area we do take out from, not in Philly.)

I was ready to believe that some Apple coder is an obsessed Oakland A's fan...

I'm renaming that contact post hast as this is quite annoying and I'm grateful for this thread's existence and answer!

Entering "Mr. As" in my contacts stopped my iPhone from correcting as --> A's!
So, a HUGE THANK YOU to both Patrick for solving this issue, and to Dave for spotlighting (ne้ admitting) the problem. Until finding this forum tonight, I too was plagued by the A's... but no longer.
As as as as as as!
PS-- Interestingly, the rationale for the problem's existence isn't borne out in my case. I don't live near Philly and I'd never even heard of the Tony A's restaurant.

(Dave, since you have no use for this thread any longer, it is obviously time for us to hijack.)

Ever since FREAKIN' 2.2, my auto-correct has been no good. When I first got my 3G, equipped with 2.0, the auto-correct was beastly. It would fix things I didn't even realize were wrong until it corrected me. However, now, it hardly corrects anything. I've gotten stuck a lowercase "i" in place of an uppercase occasionally, even. And in general, it's just not good at correcting the things it used to jump on. Such as changing "uou" or "yoi" to "you". It's become quite frustrating. :(

Hey Dave!

Just to let you know, this exact same problem was driving me insane. I found this thread, and sure enough I have a contact in my phone causing the same maddening problem.

You are not crazy.

Thanks!

Is there some new sort of auto-correct with 3.1? I keep seeing words I'm typing underlined until I'm finished. It bugs the crap out of me.

This too has been plaguing me for some time (since i first picked up the 3Gs...my first iPhone). It seemingly was being controlled by my contacts as well. I had a contact called "Mr. A's"...this burger and Ice Cream place in my home town. Unfortunately he had to be removed! It was a pretty popular place in my home town, I bet you this is annoying many of its residents with iphones.
