Sure seems like it to me, but I just don't have enough experience with this stuff to know for sure. Is this a scam?:

I am very glad to hear back from you,but i will just like to know if the item is really in good condition?cos i wanna get this for my partner who is on a company project inspector in abroad, and i will not be able to come and pick it up from your place,Because am out of state for a Business trip,so i will be glad if you can help me to handle the shipping and i prefer to paying you $100 for the shipping cost via USPS EXPRESS MAIL INTERNATIONAL EMS AND YOU CAN GET THIS FROM YOUR POST OFFICE THERE....so get back to me with all details to proceed the payment and the total price including the shipping fee as well.....and i will like to pay you via paypal email account...ok.....so do get back to me now with your paypal email personal account for instant payment..ok....

I'd prefer a local, face-to-face transaction, so I'm thinking I'm going to say no to this one... advice?

Well if you have a paypal account it can't hurt to see if he actually pays. He can't do anything with just having the account name, everybody needs that to make a payment. If he doesn't pay then screw him. The email does sound weird though.

Dave, I just listed something on Craigslist for the first time ever. I got a very similar email this morning. Trust me, it is a scam. And unfortunately yes, you can be scammed thru PayPal.
If this email was sent to you, do as I did and hit delete.

Scam. They use a stolen credit card, you ship it, then Paypal takes the money back.

I'll bet $100 the ship to address is in Nigeria.

I got a similar response to my ad.

im shipping the item to

Address : No 16, Quarry rd
City : Abeokuta
State : Ogun State
Country : Nigeria
Zip Code : 121101

so get back to me with your paypal email address so that i can proceed
with the payment at once.
regards.

Good move, Dave. I wouldn't trust anything other than face-to-face via Craigslist, like you said.

Dave, meet me Black Sheep Pub, midnight, we'll do the exchange. (Don't know how close you are to there!) :2cool:

LMAO!! :laugh2::tounge: That's one way.

I've seen many of those emails on Craigslist when i sold a few electronic items that seem to attract them. It's the same with fleabay.

When I was selling my iPhone on craigslist, most of the emails were either scammers or low ballers....I just waited it out, till I got a normal sounding email from someone who met me in person at a mall and it worked out great.

You can get seriously scammed on paypal too...just cause money goes into your account...you are not safe...paypal will always come after you for the money when they get screwed by these things...

These shipping type emails are always scams.....

Do what I did and use Kijiji:

http://www.kijiji.com/

Seriously. I had nothing but legit responses, and every single one of them wanted to meet up in person with cash in hand for the phone. I took the best offer and went for it, and now I'm $250 richer.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but since you folks are talking about selling your old phones... I replaced 2 original version 8g phones with two 3GS (love it by the way!!). I threw the old ones in a drawer thinking that they now had little value. Is that not true? Would somebody actually pay over $50 for the things?? With the 3G being only $99 I don't understand why anybody would? Am I wrong?

JoeT

I sold my 8G v1 for $200.

ZR_Yancy
06-26-2009, 12:14 PM
Some people don't want to sign a 2 year contract & to get it for that $99 price, a 2 year service agreement is needed. Or some people want to use it on another carrier such as T-Mobile which doesn't carry the iPhone.

Yeah, an unlocked subscription free iPhone is worth a lot to people. If you jailbreak and unlock them, you can sell them for more than you paid for them (subsidized).

My buddy at work just told me about this site...
cashforiphone.com

I got a $155 quote for my 8gb v1 iPhone. Apparently you fill out some details and they provide you with a quote. Then they send you a prepaid shipping box and you send them your phone. Once they get it and inspect it, they send you a check. Im a little skeptical though, since I dont get money first. But for 150 Im willing to take that chance. Im supposed to get the box this week. Ill let you guys know if I ever get my check!

I am through with Craigs list. Back to ebay for me. I sold 2-3G's recently and got the going local price for them, but it was a hassle. Now I am getting s**t like this at least twice a week.

I did, but I had a couple other items on there. I am guessing this is how they contacted me. Funny part is I never put my name in any listing. They could be sending this to a girl for all they know. Probably don't care.:011:evillaugh

I've always had success on eBay and I have perfect feedback score. I wouldn't trust anything from CL when it comes to buying/selling. eBay has its flaws too, although I would trust eBay over CL.

I don't assume anything. Before this experience, I had never logged into Craigslist before in my life. I at least knew enough to ask.

Although I did remove the question mark from the subject once the answers came in. :ok:ok

Honestly, I was surprised that someone as smart as you Dave questioned the legitimacy of that response to your ad.

Anytime someone is willing to pay above and beyond the shipping charge you've requested and mentions anything international in their email, it's positively a scam.

Fortunately, you didn't fall for it and asked for verification from others with experience.

I solve that problem by only accepting cash on the spot, in person. No shipping to people unless they are nigerian, willing to pop for the shipping.
