View Full Version : OS 3.0 / Voice Control - the downside

Discovered a 'feature' that has caused me a slight problem, I hope my lengthy description explains;
I use a DICE ipod car kit to play music through my car hifi system, once connected it brings up the white 'Accessory Connected' screen, which means I can't input from the iPhone screen. By holding down the Home button for 10 seconds, it returns to the Home screen and when I select the iPod function again, it loads the iPod app as normal and allows full control from the screen.
This worked well for my iPhone v1 and OS2 and earlier - now that I've switched to OS3.0/iPhone 3GS, I can't get off the white 'Accessory Connected' screen while in iPod mode. I can press Home and use the rest of the phone's functions, but whenever in iPod mode, I get the white screen.
Of course now with iPhone 3GS, if I hold down the Home button, I get Voice Control - on my iPhone v1 running OS3.0, nothing happens at all, I assume the 'hook' for Voice Control is in OS3.0 even though iPhone v1 doesn't support it.
So my question is, is there another way to force the iPhone to ignore or bypass the 'Accessory Connected' screen ?
TIA for any suggestions,
T

Holding down the home button before use to force quit an app. To do that you know how the hold and top button until the slide to power off appears, then hold down home for 6 seconds (i think) to kill that app. Give that a try and see if that solves your problem (since it sounds like you were just force quitting it before anyway).

Nope, same deal. It performed as you predicted, but the problem persists - when I select iPod, it sticks on the white 'Accessory Connected' screen, whereas before, on OS2, iPod would open normally and allow on-screen control.
Thanks anyway mate

Apple is known to change their accessory specifications and protocol from model to model. This sounds like one of those instances.

is the device wired into a cd player of some sort? thats how mine works. when i installed it, the new harness plugged into my cars head unit where the cd player harness used to plug in. then the cd harness plugged into the new harness. the way i change from accessory mode is by selecting a different "cd". also this is if you have a multi disc changer...

Yes, mine works that way too, only problem is it displays current track on the satnav screen, and altho you can skip to next track, you can't see a tracklist or whats up next. It was so easy controlling it from the phone itself...........

It might have more to do with the car kit than the iPhone.
I have a 2009 Acura TSX Tech and I connect my iPhone to my car stereo via a USB port. When I connect it it has the familiar white screen that says that the accessory is attached. I can then press the home button and use other apps like Pandora, Stitcher, MLB At Bat, etc. to use to play through my car stereo.

Hmmm, there's a thought - are these apps for JB phones or stock ?

yes, but try "changing" the disc... example on my 6 disc changer
disc 1: no control on phone, plays from top of song list
disc 2: no control on phone, plays playlist 1
disc 3: no control on phone, plays playlist 2
disc 4: no control on phone, plays playlist 3
disc 5: no control on phone, plays playlist 4
disc 6: control on phone and head unit, plays whatever the hell i tell it to...:laugh2:

Hey Tony, I am about to purchase a DICE as well. Does it still play or not? Can you use the car's control system to play music?

Blindspott, thanks for the suggestion mate, I'm gonna try fiddling around with those settings in the car hifi itself and see what happens.
Hey Ramesh, yeah it still works and the sound quality is brilliant. I can FF and RW, and skip tracks back and forth, and adjust volume using the car controls. On my car's OEM satnav display, I can set it to display current track, although I don't use it that way as its a bit clunky.
I prefer to use iPod controls from the screen itself, plus I can see tracklist, select podcast, album, artist etc., hence my original query.
Think I paid about £90 for my DICE kit, and £50 to get it installed by a car audio outfit near me.
Hope this helps
