Moved from Sprint to AT&T for the iPhone. On Sprint I never had an issue with the number of SMS messages on my phone. For the past couple of days I am receiving a message that my SMS mailbox is almost full. Does anybody know if these are all stored server side too and appears that a limit is in place? I would figure the limit would just be the memory of the phone.

Jesus christ! I'm not making any assumptions, but there is NO WAY you had conversations and # of SMS messages that the iPhone can store, on any other phone, and not have storage issues. Dude, i've had SMS conversations that go on for 2 days with the iPhone, with no storage messages. Are you deleting your old conversations??

This is the first time I've heard of this. How many conversations do you have saved?

Have 22 conversations with some of them being IM forwarding from AOL IM and Yahoo! IM. Sounds like there might be some limit somewhere. Be interesting to see if others get this message. I cleared some of my chat messages and the notification goes away for about a day.

I pretty much erase mine within about 24 hours of the conversation ending. Helps me keep it under control.

I txt all the time and I still haven't receive any warning messages. I've only deleted a few conversations but I still have a lot saved. I'm sure there's a limit but I would assume it will take a while to get there.

I get the warnings every day. Hasn't anyone found out which file in the file system specifies the limit and then changed it? I bet we could find it. We know we have the space for it, it's just some dumb limit that they put in there that isn't necessary. I wish I knew a hacker...

Are those conversations that have been deleted, available somewhere for retrieval in the i-phone disk space?

i think that the sms limit is roughly 75,000 messages. but i could be wrong.

I get this warning quite a bit, too. Once thing I've noticed is that when people text from the same number, it creates a conversation, but if they're sending sms from their computer, it creates a new conversation for every text, and it's annoying to have to go through and delete them. I wonder if this is what is taking up more room?
Edit: But there's still no way I have over 75000 messages...

This limit was increased with 1.1.3 but I'm positive some of these people are using other versions.

Evidence.....could be. Do those conversations exist somewhere? Even though they were "cleared" from the i-phone. Is there a difference between clearing conversation and deleting messages? Whats the real facts?

It's extremely difficult to get texts once you've deleted them. AT&T will give conflicting responses when asked about this; I've heard that once they're deleted they're gone for good, and then I've heard that the only way to retrieve them if you want to use them in court is to subpoena them. ???

Thats good to know! So even some data retrieval company couldnt pull up something from a back up folder synced to i-tunes? Or hidden somewhere on 8GB of memory on the phone? I'm surprised I dont see more questions on this subject.

I think it depends on who is doing the retrieval. For instance, I doubt that the mayor of Detroit kept those incriminating texts on his phone, but they were found.
For the average Joe, there are devices that can retrieve deleted texts from SIM cards if you can get hold of the SIM card in question (or get a court order, I suppose).
As for the backup sync to iTunes, I'm still new to the iPhone to stab a guess at this... Anyone?

Thanks Buffy. My understanding is that the SIM card in the i-phone has no data on it at all, its only there for phone activation. Anyone?

in versions 1.12 down - the limit was 1000 text messages.
in 1.13 it was increased 75 times.
