There's an article going around about battery life...
Widespread Battery Problems? (http://72.14.209.104/search?hs=sUq&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.wirelessinfo.com%2Fcont ent%2F2-out-of-our-3-iPhones-have-faulty-batteries.htm&btnG=Search)
... the interesting thing is, I'm not sure if I've ever seen that same glow when my battery is charged and still on the charger... Look at the iPhone all the way on the right...
http://www.dangrabbit.com/photography/albums/Shares/batteryglow.jpg
I do get great battery life, when I charge I DO see the plug icon in the little battery, but I'm not sure about the "glow"... I'm charging now to see if I ever get to the "glow" state...
Does YOURS glow when it's fully charged, while it's still on the charger??

I've never noticed if it glows or not just that the bar is full. My battery gets excellent life though, much better than my Q and on par with my Treo 755p although my iPhone gets much more use as I'm constantly playing with it.
I have noticed under "usage" in settings it gives you the total amount of time (usage + standby) since your last full charge, so you can add those totals up to see if you got a full charge or not the last time you charged it i suppose.

Apparently, it's SUPPOSED to glow when it's fully charged and on the dock/AC charger.
Look at THIS article (http://72.14.209.104/search?hs=sUq&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.wirelessinfo.com%2Fcont ent%2F2-out-of-our-3-iPhones-have-faulty-batteries.htm&btnG=Search).
Whether it's a hardware bug or a software bug, no one seems to know. I'm not sure mine has ever glowed either, but I'm getting very good battery life.

My battery life doesn't seem too geat. I find it hard to get through the day withough draining it completely. Maybe I'll take mine back to Apple and ask for a new one.

To me it just looks like the brightness level is different on all 3 of them. Just look at the gradient where the time and unlock slider are. They are clearly different on all 3. Plus the camera isn't perpendicular to the phone.. its tilted a little bit and that can also throw off the coloring.

If you look at it, the wording on the top of the screen is also brighter.
I'm sure the 2 on the left just have a higher brightness setting, or something.

Go to the article itself and look at the closeup of the three batteries. I think it shows more than just a brightness level difference. You can also see a sliver at the top end of the battery that's not completely filled in.
Test it yourself if you think it's BS... fully charge your battery and turn brightness up. Does it look like the picture?

Not necessarily. If it's a bug in the software properly reporting whether the battery is fully charged, it's not a big deal (can be fixed with firmware update).
If it's a matter of the phone not really getting a fully charge because the battery is somehow defective, it's something we should be aware of.
My battery holds a great charge, but if the software isn't reporting properly that's kind of important to know, don't you think?

Alright even while I was recharding them I noticed a difference, one phone has the glow and the other has none... it seems to be more of a screen problem. I never noticed it before but even if you goto the weather widget for the same city, one phone has a sun with really long rays and the other has really short. Its something with the screens.

Mine is reporting fully charged with the little plug icon in the mini-battery, but the large battery does not appear to be glowing (and I reset my brightness back to the default).
I'm going to leave it on the charger for a little longer and do a hard reset...
Mind you, though I get good battery life I have to wonder if I've ever gotten a REAL full charge since Usage Stats have never worked.

FYI - I am on the phone with Apple trying to get a definitive answer.
Also, my battery reported fully charged (little plug)... I took it off, went to the AC charger and plugged it in. It showed fully charged (little plug)... I did a hard reset and unplugged it. After it started up I put it back on the dock and IT IS NOT showing fully charged. It has been sitting with a lightning bult now for 10 minutes.
Something tells me the phone (or my phone) isn't accurately reporting fully charged...

No. LOL.
I'm still on the phone with Apple... THey've escalated me to a "product specialist" and he had to go to his supervisor and "their engineers"... the answer I got was this...
"Yes, it should glow when it's fully charged, but it doesn't have to... if that makes sense".
LOL!
Off the phone now...
They seem to think my battery is fully getting charged, but somehow the software isn't reporting it properly... or something. They forwarded my request to "the engineers" and I'm supposed to get a call back today or in the next few days.
And I was lucky... they called my problem "odd" ... :tounge:

You opinion is noted - lol - but it isn't silly.
Your battery is fully charged, you have the plug icon in the small battery and the large battery glows with the green filling up the battery COMPLETELY... mine has NEVER looked like that, regardless of the fact that I get the mini-plug icon in the little battery.
Now whether it's a software or hardware glitch is still the open question.

I read on another post about having "the glow" as reference to The Last Dragon, how funny!
Looking at my battery icon at full charge, I have a halo "glow" around the green battery. That constitutes that to be a glow to me, however not the glow Bruce Leroy had :laugh2:

I plugged my iPhone in last night before I went to bed and when I woke up this morning it was very close to being full, and the lightning bolt was still present. But when I went into my settings, under usage it said 55 minutes of standby which had changed from the previous 13hrs or so. Anyone know how this would be possible, or why this happened? lol

I don't really know. When I surf the net on EDGE, my battery seems to plummet. Like, it will lose a notch of battery every 20-30 minutes. With everything else though, it seems fine.
Is that normal?

20-30 min is a lot of surfing...I do a lot of web surfing at after about 2.5-3 hours I'm halfway through the battery, maybe a bit less. But web browsing is only rated for 6 hours under "optimal conditions" Anyway, so if you are near that you should be fine.

I found something very interesting related to this topic of the battery meter showing fully charged. I usually charge my iphone using the power supply attachment provided in the box every night. When I do this it never fully charges and never resets the usage properties. I will wake up every morning after it has been charging for 8+ hours to see that there is still a sliver of space from being fully charged.
However, when I plug it into the computer to charge through the USB (Itunes running in background) it will charge to 100% and reset the usage properties. I have done this two days in a row now with the exact same result.
Can anyone else confirm that this happens at their end. It may be an issue with the power supply attachment and the iphone that doesn't complete the charging cycle.

I've had no issues with my battery life. After reading this thread I went home and charged my iPhone. I could not get the battery icon to change to a "plug" until I used the DC adapter instead of the dock.
I did not notice any change in the brightness of the green battery indicator when the "plug" icon showed up. It also still looks like it has a small amount left to fill at the end of the green indicator. I think a percentage amount would go great on top of the green battery indicator. This might clear up some of the confusion!

I see the difference.
What's funny is when mine is "fully charged" it looks like your first picture, BUT with the little plug icon inside the mini-battery.

I'm at 5 hours usage, 1 day 18 hours standby and I'm at 30% left... my brightness is at 50%.. I'm gonna try setting it at 15-20% like you and see if I get better battery life.

I read this thread last nigth and then wanted to see if my battery "glowed". Well this morning it didnt glow and there was space in the bar so it apparently wasnt a complete charge even though i charged it overnigth. On top of that in settings it says your iphone has been used for one day without complete recharge and that iphone was plugged charge inbetween but not fully. My battery today was not as good as it was just the day before. I did the same amount of things on it durring the day and im below 50% where the day before i was at about 90%. Now I ask you what the hell is going on here? Im gonna try a soft reset tonigth and then charge and see how that works. Im also going to call apple and hear what they have to say ...
Your battery is fully charged, you have the plug icon in the small battery and the large battery glows with the green filling up the battery COMPLETELY
Good eye. In other words, note the gap or lack of it between the green and the "metal" of the battery.

I just talked to apple. They asked me if I keep my wifi setting turned on ... which I do. If you leave it tunred on and plug it in only from the wall your network wifi stays on the phone all nigth ... which explains why I have 17 hours of usage today which is rediculous. Also your battery cant charge completely if the wifi is on bc it drains it so much. This is why when people said if they charge it through their computers it gets a full charge because I believe your wifi settings shut off if you sync and leave it charging ... or this is what Apple said to me on the phone. We will see tonigth ... but it does make sense because yesterday was the first day I used my wifi in a while ...

Hey does anybody know if you need to bring something specific to the apple store when you are returning your iphone for a new one? Like a receipt or something? Also I bought mine at att, can i still return it at apple? Do I also have to bring the box and all included accesories?

Did the phone they gave you have better battery life and does it glow radioactively? Mine is like the picture all the way to the left on the article and the battery life sucks.

They said sometimes the software won't display the battery meter correctly even if it was fully charged. So I would wait and see first. As long as your battery life is good, I wouldn't risk swapping it.

Yeah i think im gonna wait, are you sure though because when I plug it in to charge it hardly shows the full charged plug. Im going to do some tests on the battery life anyway, thanks for the info.

It worked for me! Finally green, glowing and 100% charge!
After taking it off the wall charger (all night) and still not having a full green and glowing battery, I unlocked it and checked email and usage. I then plugged it into my laptop (allowed it to lock) and it continued to charge to a FULL and HEALTHY green and glowing battery at 100%!!! Thanks!

I'm not showing any Usage or Standby times under "Time since last full charge". Granted it has been a day since full charge. Should I be worried? Next time I charge it I am going to check Usage. I don't know if my battery meter glows or not either. I do get the plug icon when fully charged.

Ya know I thought of something, I had my email checking every 15 mins...
I wonder if that is what was killing my battery. Man they really need push email, it would be so much better.
Anyone have thoughts on whether this would kill my battery?
Thx

Push email would maybe help, but it's not an option, they use a synch feature like VZN does with my wife's LG EnV. I bet the battery life suffers mostly because of the big touchscreen (the coolest feature of the phone by far). WiFi use would use it up too, similar to the BT radio. Nobody on this thread has said how long it lasts until it dies, or how many mAH are in the battery. My Blackberry (lasts 4-5 days moderate use) will go at least another day after it hits 20%. I have a 30% larger battery in it though. I bet the iPhone will go 2-3 days before it dies.

One of the biggest knocks on the iPhone has been its battery. It's not removable, which means -- like an iPod's battery -- it will eventually run out of juice and need to be replaced. But many media reports this week have gone further. Take, for example, CNET's review of the iPhone, which states that "Apple is estimating one battery will last for 400 charges -- probably about two years' worth of use."
Two years of use, the review says, and your iPhone dies. Or disappears in a puff of smoke, like those old tape recordings on "Mission Impossible." Sounds pretty awful, right?
Too bad it's completely wrong.
Apple estimates that the iPhone will lose 20 percent of its capacity -- a darn sight less than 100 percent -- "after 400 full charge and discharge cycles."
"Sadly, there are some inaccurate reports out there," Apple marketing vice president Greg Joswiak told me Thursday during a brief phone call from New York City. Joswiak isn't quite sure where the story went off the rails -- David Pogue's initial New York Times review of the iPhone mentioned the battery issue, but Pogue got it right: "Apple says that the battery starts to lose capacity after 300 or 400 charges." Somehow, though, things got lost in translation. And follow-on reports started claiming that 300 to 400 charges would be the end of the line.
"After 400 complete cycles, the iPhone's battery still has 80 percent of its charged capacity," Joswiak said. "And by a complete charge cycle, I mean completely draining the battery, a full chemical cycle." In other words, using a little battery and then putting your iPhone back in its dock doesn't count as a charge cycle. If you use a quarter of your iPhone's battery and then re-charge it, Joswiak said, that's the equivalent of a quarter of a charge cycle. "If you top it off, you're not wasting a charge cycle," Joswiak said.
Read more from Apple's Greg Joswiak
So let's put this in perspective: if you completely drained your iPhone's battery every day -- which would be a whole lot of use, since Apple estimates the iPhone can offer up to 8 hours of talk time per charge -- in about 13 months your battery would only hold 80 percent of its current charge. Or to put it another way, battery use will vary widely from person to person, but generally your iPhone will still be providing all but the heaviest users with good battery life even two years from now.

this may be a dumb question (and is waaaay after the fact since i see you posted like 7 months ago), but did the phone on the left side of your pictures have on some sort of protective shield that included the screen? maybe that made the difference..

No, there really is a difference between the one on the left and the one on the right. I also couldn't get a "full" charge (or the 'glow') initially. I took it off the charger, powered it down completely, and charged it overnight before turning the phone on again, and I've had the glow ever since.

thanks. yeah, i saw the updated pictures (sorry -- i should've followed the thread further last time).
I also noticed "the glow" for the first time today (I've had the iphone for about ten days now). Yesterday, after charging my battery to what appeared to be full, i used it for a bit last night and it quickly drained about 5-10%. I put it back on the charger overnight and, upon waking, noticed the full battery appeared different: a thin faint halo around it -particularly at the top corners- and a faint, thin, green, hazy line just above the upper edge of the battery. I imagine this is what others refer to as "the glow". Perhaps this is the true full charge (after the trickle charging has completed).
I'm curious to see how this affects my usage for this cycle. Previously, it seemed shorter than i expected. As commented by others, the battery appears to drain very rapidly (visibly even) when surfing or watching youtube via the edge network. I haven't tried the wireless yet, but will later today.
I did a trial run of the battery two days ago.. with wireless and bluetooth off, and keeping the phone in airplane mode for all but one hour(sent two text messages and checked one e-mail), I was able to watch four movies back-to-back before it completely died (i.e. over 6 hours of usage). So that was reassuring. Of course, that trial run also left me cross-eyed.
All of you do know that the Glow is just a picture, right? And no, mine is not glowing.
