As the title says, I can get tethering to work with my imac, but not my macbook. My MB doesnt even see the iPhone, but I can tether via BT. How can I get the MB to recognize the iPhone as a network device?

Dang it, I just assumed it would work on the MBA. I tried it on the iMac last night and got it going in <30 seconds. Let me try the MBA now.

I just tried it on the MBA and it took a bit of configuring to get it working.

Here is what I did but I'm not sure if I just got lucky or what.
1. Plug the phone into the MB with tethering turned off and open up the Network Preferences.
2. Turn USB tethering on (I just selected USB only because I have no interest in BT tethering as of yet).
3. Then under the list of possible network connections, hit the "+" to add another connection type.
4. Under Interface you should see an option for "Ethernet Adaptor (e2)". Choose that option.
5. You can then name the connection anything you want, I chose 3G Tethering (I know, original).
6. Then, once it realizes that you've added the new network I selected "Configure using DCHP" and the connection went from yellow to green in just a few seconds.

Let me know if this helps.

Youngbinks, I thought they said tethering would not be working until sometime in the summer?? What did you do? Anyway do you think that it will tether to a pc laptop?

Well, there is currently a hack out that allows you to enable tethering immediately. As far as I know, you need a slightly older version of iTunes 8 in order for it to work, as the current version doesn't allow for carrier upgrades. Here is the article via CrunchGear.
Enable Tethering (http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/06/17/enable-tethering-in-iphone-30/)

I spent quite a while trying to get it to work on my MB, but realized that I'm on the 10.4.11 OS. And I guess you need 10.5. I'm SOL.

Here's how I got tethering to work for me. Its extremely easy and took about 5 mins. Requires None of that jailbreaking, pineapple, or yellowpee stuff either. Just stock 3.0 I dont think it works with first gen but not sure, you can try tho.

Macbook Aluminum 10.5.7 (first one w/o SD reader) + iPhone 3G 3.0

1. on the iPhone goto help.benm.at in Safari
2. scroll to Mobileconfigs - downloads - USA - ATT and install the profile
3. on iPhone - settings - General - Reset - Reset network settings (this step is to enable visual voicemail)
4. I restarted iPhone just in case
5. Turn on bluetooth on iPhone and Macbook
6. on iPhone turn on tethering in settings - General - Network - Internet tethering
7. On Macbook, click on bluetooth icon in upper right menu bar
8. Set up bluetooth device
9. setup and pair macbook with iPhone, make sure iphone is in bluetooth discoverable screen. (i forgot what the setup says but its easy, check everything, network support, blah, blah, blah usual pairing)
10. click on bluetooth icon again in upper right menu bar, click on ur phone and connect to network.
11. thats it

this can be redone by going in ur iPhone settings - general - profile - and remove att profile. and iPhone restart.

if u want to use USB instead of bluetooth, skip all bluetooth steps and just click on wifi in upper right menu bar and open network preference and choose Ethernet Adaptor (en5) everything installs itself.

I would not go crazy on the tethering bandwith, in case ATT gets suspicious about ur abnormal usage.

My "Connect to Network" under the bluetooth bar is grayed out. I can't get it to work - I'm not sure why. The thing is, I had tethering working the other day - I've done all the steps. It's just, all of a sudden, connect is grayed out.

So, I got BT tethering turning on for my MacBook w/ no problems, but can't seem to get it to work with my iMac (desktop). When I go to choose the setting "Join network iPhone" under BT it is greyed out. Any suggestions? I have tried all kinds of different things to get it to work. http://sc.webmessenger.msn.com/10.1.0323.0/session/images/emoticons/smile_sad.gif Set it up on the notebook in like 30 seconds flat. Hmmm.
