A simple technical note from Apple on Tuesday warns that it can't guarantee third-party devices like the Palm Pre will work with iTunes and adds that future updates to the software may break media syncing with third-party devices.

Frankly, I'm surprised it took Apple so long to make a statement about it. For Palm to think that hacking the competition's software would be a viable long-term solution was pretty foolish in my opinion.

I agree. I guess they just wanted to wait until they had the new iPhone ready to roll out and then slam it to Pre. Everyone knew this was coming though.

Well the interesting thing about this note is in order for Apple to stop the Pre from syncing they'd have to do more than just a "simple update" to the software. The Pre reports itself as an iPod so unless Apple did a specific block for the iPod that the Pre report's itself as they won't stop the syncing. If they did this then it wouldn't be a simple "update" but rather a specific block put in place to stop the Pre. After they did that the lawsuits would come up with the anti-competitive crap and such. It wouldn't be smart for Apple to do anything but try and blow smoke up everyone's ass by putting out that statement.

Sorry I just don't see why this is a big deal to everyone. I think Apple may have put out that statement as a form of posturing or chest puffing but I don't think they are going to do anything about it. And they didn't hack the competitions software, they just coded the Pre to identify itself as an iPod.
Apple stands to lose more in music sales than they would gain by blocking the Pre. Now that all iTunes music is DRM free wouldn't they WANT more devices to work with their software to keep people from buying from other avenues? Personally it doesn't matter to me either way I'll just drag and drop my music if I have to or use "Missing Sync". I think it's Apple fans making a fuss over this than anything. The Pre is an awesome phone but it is not a threat to the iPhone simply because of the popularity of the iPhone. The Pre is an alternative, and a darn great one at that but it is not going to put a huge dent in iPhone sales until it is sold by all carriers, and even then that would be doubtful. Hype and marketing are not strong suits of Palm.
I see no advantage whatsoever in Apple making any kind of move. And I don't see any patent infringement suits on the behalf of either company because they both have cases against each other and both companies would end up losing in the end and the only ones that would benefit are the lawyers.
