thats really making me second guess buying a 3Gs.... I can upgrade every year, but my wife cannot and I don't want to lock her into something "ehhh...." when something great might be coming soon.

I wouldn't base too much of what you do right now off of a rumor of the future.

I agree with you Phxblue. With this kind of technology you could always be waiting for the next big development. I have already waited 2 years the iPhone. I know that people who bought the v. 1 and 3G iphones have already had years of enjoyment and experience of using this innovative technology, and its many applications.

Ok this is from left field, but if you follow Kevin Rose on twitter (Digg.com founder) he did a tweet this morning that there is a "rumor" Apple is working on an aluminum unibody iphone (think macbook pro) again he said it was a "rumor," but he has been correct with some of his apple predictions before...... then again, he may have just been drunk....

There were some concepts made of an iPhone like that. There was a discussion of that on the NextGeniPhone thread a couple months ago when rumors of the next iPhone were at fever's pitch.

That's smart. That's why I'm not buying the iPhone 3Gs...
I know next years iPhone will be better than the 3Gs, so I'm saving my money. The 3Gs is just too similar to the iPhone 3G for me to spend money on it. I had higher hopes for the new iPhone and was kind of let down when they announced the 3Gs.
Looking forward to next year's iPhone though. I'd really think about it before you go out and buy a 3Gs.

I couldn't agree with you more. All the people purchasing the iPhone 3G S are going to be jealous next summer when I'm walking around with my 64gb multi core iPhone and they can't upgrade yet... :laugh2:

If you abstain simply because of whatever is down the road, you'd NEVER buy anything. There's ALWAYS something newer and better coming "next year".
Still, there's some validity in saying that there doesn't seem to be a great enough "jump" in technology in each successive model to warrant upgrading each year. But TWO years in between... well then, that might make things much fresher. I'm on V1, and going from a V1 to a 32GB 3Gs will seem nice, I think.

That release (theoretically speaking) will probably resemble the v1 release – expensive. Then the following release (2011) would be a similar unit but less expensive… I’m on the skip every other release plan…2007 v1 8gb, 2009 3GS 16gb, 2011 4G 64gb… LOL

I agree, 2 years in between is something you would have to decide upon yourself. Going from a V1 to a 3Gs is a pretty big "jump."
However, for me, I probably would hold out one more year, the phone itself doesn't have enough changes for me to want to upgrade now. But I have a 3G, so I'm in a little bit of a different position than you are...
I just expected AT LEAST a 5 mega pixel camera and more new features. It's got about 2 or 3 new features, one of which most will never use, a compass.... and it loads "faster." The main selling point of the phone is it's faster and that wasn't what I was looking for.
I wanted a much more improved camera (I don't feel like we got it) and Flash. The video, voice and more space are the only thing I like, but it's not worth paying $500 for.
Next year you'll be able to get all that and 64GB on my phone, not to mention the new features, one of which will hopefully be Flash. Then, for me, 16GB to 64GB is a nice leap...and who knows, hopefully Flash will be included and you'll have AT LEAST a 7 or 8 megapixel camera, however Apple is purposely moving slowly in upgrading the camera since they're only up to 3 mega pixels. It'll most likely be 5 mega pixels next year.
I'm not sure if you'll see the multicore processor that rumors are saying you'll see, I'm just saying I need more to pay to upgrade than what they have given us. It's too similar to the phone I have for me to go pay a jacked up price for.

I'm sorry to hear. That really sucks. Nothing worse than lowlifes who steal from others. I would like to have that tracking from MobileMe but I can't justify paying the $100 per year for it.

I'm sure every phone will be subsidized from here on out as long as you are eligible for an upgrade and willing to take on a 2-year contract.
I'm not eligible, I'm not willing to pay a bloated price for the 3G S and I'm not willing to take on a 2-year commitment.
3.0 and it's subsequent 3.x updates will hold me over until iPhone 3G Sx and iPhone OS 4.0. :laugh2:

I am still in debate, I have the $199-$299 option, But I also have 2 lines on my account, which I will let the contract expire and keep it available for an upgrade just in case, Apple release the 64GB, quadcore, OLED, skies the limit iphone. Or the mac tablet ( the reason I have not upgrade my MBPro ). only wishful thinking here.

I'm with you ryfone. I didn't upgrade this time around because it's only a minor upgrade IMO. So what if there's a slight speed improvement and the ability to do video? I don't really need a compass at this point to tell me what direction I'm facing; GPS does the same thing. Yeah, the extra memory space is nice but don't really need it at this point. If I really wanted to do video, all I have to do is jailbreak and use one of the few recording apps available, and from what I've recorded, things look quite good. There may be a few things missing for us 3G users running 3.0 software, but it's nothing I can't live without.
I'm just glad I decided to wait until next years model. By the time 2010 comes around there will be plenty of reasons to upgrade.
Hmmm . . . I will continue using my current V1 until something a bit more enticing rolls out. For me, the 3G S does not offer enough for me to justify upgrading.

I guess the jury is still out on battery life, but I've left lag behind with the 3GS. The 3GS isn't for everybody, I know, but it's a huge upgrade in my personal opinion over my 3G.
But - the 3G is still a damned nice phone...

i will be getting any new iphone they come up with as long as its an improvement an not a "more affordable model" i bought the 3gs on a discount and the wife has the 3g. when the new one comes out she will be elligible for the upgrade and i will get her upgrade and she will get my 3gs. she is just happy having any iphone so it does not matter to her to get the new one as long as its in new condition. we keep ours screen protected and in hard plastic cases.

Easy for me, I went from a nokia 'makes calls' to the 3Gs so I am very happy, if a 4th gen phone came out next year I would probably wait at least 6 months before considering it anyway,to make sure the bugs were ironed out, and by that time my contract would be up anyway.
Couple of things they should be looking at though is an easier/cheaper upgrade path and also to make the actual phone part of the phone better, I find the volume is not high enough and the signal reciever not as good as the cheap'n'cheerfull Nokia.

I think the biggest improvement that the 3Gs offers is the doubling of the ram from 128 to 256. This is what makes the phone lag free. I was in the Apple store about a week ago and I conducted a non scientific test and had my 3G next to the store's 3Gs. I turned off WIFI on both phones and loaded programs, web pages etc. As far as the web goes, not much difference on page load times. OTOH, programs do load faster and the entire UI is much smoother. My eligible upgrade date is mid September and I will NOT be upgrading. I know that whatever comes out in June/July 2010 will be better than the 3Gs. I would hate to have to shell out more money just 9 months after getting the 3Gs.

I think most 3GS owners have noticed a marked increase in speed when loading web pages. For me, the difference is night and day over my 3G.

Literally twice as fast at least. My best friend has a 3g and he hates me for getting the 3gS we compare them all the time and the difference is huge. Just opening big apps or loading a large web page its a huge difference.
Could someone please tell me....what in effect does this multicore have on the functioning of the Iphone.
Thanks
My understanding of it is something like this...
1. Smaller manufacturing process (45 nm transistors, vs. 65 nm now), so it takes less power to begin with.
2. Multiple cores, so cores can be selectively shut off when not needed, and kicked into gear when needed.
3. Perform tasks quicker so there's less "user" time (i.e. the screen is on for less time since it gets the job done quicker).
4. Possibly allow more efficient multitasking, so maybe third party apps can officially run in the background (wishful thinking).
Although, in regards to #3, the 3GS already performs most tasks of that nature fairly quickly, so an improvement may not be as pronounced in this area as it was from the 3G
I am waiting till next June to upgrade to the new iPhone, mostly because I am not even eligible till november-december anyway. I am getting a divorce right now so money's so tight I can squeeze a penny and make Abe cry. As far as speed... I think the 3G is fast enough for me right now, a far cry from doing things on Edge, and I am sure that the 3Gs is another leap in speed as well. But getting a 3Gs 8 months before the 4G (for lack of a better name) comes out would be kind of silly when I am fine with the 3G right now. My only complaint is battery life (since 3.0) and I am hoping that it changes with 3.1.
