I am getting my Dad's iPhone when he gets his new one. I currently have wifi that I use with my iPod touch and will not need or use Internet through AT&T. My question is, is it still required to have the iPhone package added since I will not be getting it from AT&T?

I'd rather not add this extra expense. But, will I still be able to use the iPhone without the Internet package?

i'm pretty sure it is necessary at the very least for visual voicemail.

I never understood this... why? I simply hold the 1 key and listen to my messages! I can see the miscalls and put 2 + 2 together.

and Pgglb, if you can stay away from AT&T service and live off of WiFi, go for it! They really stress and push (and make it mandatory) to get their service. Now, do you currently have a 3G SIM Card? Because I believe they can only read 3G cards and if you have a older phone (my old SIM still read Cingular...) that might be a problem.

Yea you will still have to get the data package if you have service with AT&T. No work arounds for it. You can just put your SIM card in the phone, but be careful and dont call when you get data charges over $30. You will have to jailbreak the phone to keep it off the internet too.

AT&T-No
Local GSM network-Yes
You can have an iPhone without a data plan (disabling data through the network would be very wise) and just use WiFi, but not on AT&T.

Just leave airplane mode on all the time. You can still use wifi when it is turned on, but make sure you never turn airplane mode off because you will end up with a bill costing you a couple grand.

Umm, I have a v1 iPhone on AT&T with no data plan.

Now to clarify, I bought my iPhone on eBay and just unlocked it and put my SIM card in and haven't had an issue. I added the data plan for a few months, but needed to save some money so I called up AT&T and told them I had an unlocked iPhone and wanted to turn the data plan off, and they complied with my request.
