I am a big runner myself. Does anybody else here run often?

Do you use the Nike+ iPod setup?

Thanks for that suggestion, Jack. I'll give that app a try. I started running at the beginning of spring and am totally hooked. I do about four miles three times a week. I love mapmyrun.com as a place to track my distance and find runs other people like, but I think I had a problem with the related iPhone app or something.. can't really remember.

Does Runkeeper have to run in the foreground? Can you listen to music or talk on the phone while it tracks? I know I had that issue with trailguru..

You can lock the screen to save battery life. The pro version has some extras, but I can't remember what they are ATM. I use the free version, which is really cool, and the pro version is probably better yet!

I don't run... at all. Only when I am trying to catch some one, which rarely happens. That's why my breath is really short when I am running or doing any hard exercises. Any ideas on how to longer it?

The only way to get in better shape is to get some exercise. I would recommend starting with some short runs. With running, you have to build up slowly. It can be pretty dangerous if you don't start small.

I recommend starting by trying to run a mile every other day or so. After a week at this rate, if you're feeling confident, try to up your distance by a half-mile or so. Slowly, you can build your way up.

Make sure to talk to a doctor before doing any of this, and you might want to check out a running site like Runner's World, to get some ideas.

MapMyRun is a great tool and I use it a lot too. It's fun to try new routes and see what you can do. I would recommend going to a real running store and getting some quality running shoes fitted as well.

Running is hard to get motivated for, but it's actually a lot of fun once you get out there. You'll feel a lot better about yourself once you do it.

Good luck and keep running.

Thanks a lot. The problem is, the H1N1 virus is all over Egypt nowadays, and it's not even safe to go outside without wearing the white mask thing. I hate wearing it but I have to. A lot of people caught it, and the one who started it was an American woman -_- she's in the hospital now because it was too late finding out and the H1N1 already affected her respiration system. There are 7 cases in my university, and they are foreigners as well, and a lot of streets are actually closed down in Egypt nowadays, as well as a lot of fast food restaurants. I'm supposed to start taking my summer courses in the university after tomorrow but I don't feel safe, but I have to, otherwise my parents will kill me!

Anyhow, I'll probably buy a treadmill and run in my house once in a while, I think I can get used to that. Is there any other device like the treadmill that you recommend for losing weight (like running and stuff)? Also not a very expensive one you know.. just a simple one. I heard there was one like a.. a... shaker? You just stand on it and it keeps shaking your body and stuff llool it's weird. I want to go from size 32 to size 30 in pants so.. I'm trying my best as well as managing a diet nowadays, been doing it for four days now.

Well, I'm not exactly an expert on exercise, but there are a few machines. I have used the shaking device you talk about and it's very, very weird :laugh2:. I am under the impression that you have to do other exercise while being shaken (like bicep curls) in order to get a workout.

I would recommend a cardio machine like a treadmill or an elliptical. Ellipticals won't give you quite the workout that a treadmill will but they can still help. Also, if you know of an indoor pool, swimming is a very good workout without pounding on your joints.

I don't have a swimming pool in door but my best friend does and I go swim there some times. I can pretty much tell you that swimming is one of the best exercises (sports) I have ever practiced before. It's even better than soccer, I tell you.

I run atleast 5 days a week I highly reccommend Brooks (brand) running shoes very comfortable and light. I also have runkeeper but me and my wife only use that when we walk. When I run I use pandora radio it's very nice I put on some peppy music like AC/DC or whatever and go down the road.

I got RunKeeper Pro when it was free for the 24 hour period and it is awesome.

As for running, I was captain of the Cross Country team back in high school and we'd run 5-10 miles a day. These days I might run once every couple of weeks. I really need to get back into it.

Tarek, go outside and get some exercise. The H1N1 scare is just media sensationalism at its greatest. There are far worse diseases to worry about than Influenza.

I'm not really into running. Instead, I do a Rollerblade (30 min), Mountain Bike (30 min), and swim (20 min) circuit 4 days a week. I take a break from exercising on the 3 days a week that I work (12.5 hour shifts).

H1N1 or as the americans call it... swine flu.

Its just a media scare, the chances of you catching it arent that high. I suggest you try swimming if you cant run. Also to add to Europa's post you should try biking everywhere thats within reasonable distance. Like running down to the market, or a store or something. Its got to be faster than a car in crowded Egypt.

That is true. I have been thinking of buying a bike, I had one like four years ago that I never even rode and I have no idea where it is, probably in my old house but now I am going to need a new one anyway. Riding bikes is awesome, I used to love it, but lost interest in the end.

I'm a big fan of running and cycling. I used to do them a lot as a teen, but as time went on I lost interest due to other stresses in life. I'm trying to get motivated again. I recently had my bike fixed over the weekend, my back tire wasn't holding air so a new tube was put in and all is well.

I'm definitely gonna try out RunKeeper. This will be useful when I go for a sprint or decide to go cycling for a few hours. :)

Okay, I used it this morning and liked it; thanks for the tip. It's nice to have a more accurate measure of distance and not have to stay on the streets. I need to play with it some more at home. I clicked the little lock, but the display still showed the whole time, so my phone was hothothot when I got home. I remember having this problem when I used trailguru. Should have done my research and planning before I was ready to push the button and run. SOP for me, though.. act now, think later. :laugh2:

Tarek.. "start slow" can be much slower than just heading out to run a mile. I run intervals, currently four minutes of running and two minutes of walking - nine times. When my class started twelve weeks ago, we were running a minute and walking five. Building slowly has made this totally doable for me. I feel empowered and I love it. My class has been through Running for Women, but I know there are Couch to 5k groups online.. do a search.

And DEFINITELY go to a running store to be properly fitted for shoes. It makes a HUGE difference. I used to run occasionally on the treadmill at the gym, pushed through pain every single time, blaming my bad joints. Got a good pair of higher stability shoes after the running store told me I was over-pronating and I have had NO pain at all since then.

Before you decide to purchase the Nike+ read the reviews on the Apple Store. They are not very favorable. Apparently the battery life is really bad and a number of people have to keep buying new sensors. I was thinking of purchasing it for my 3GS iPhone but now I will stick with RunKeeper.

Well, I didn't mean to insinuate that there's anything wrong with a mile a day, so excuse me if that came across.

But, I was just saying that in the perspective of a world where people run marathons and do a whole lot of training, a mile is relatively short. I'd say a medium run is anywhere between 3 and 6 miles, and something above 6 is pretty long.

As for the "mile a day" suggestion to Tarek, I was just using a hypothetical example. Again, I don't know anything about your situation, so I am in no position to recommend workouts. Just trying to help out a little, but really anything is good. Hey, if you can get exercise walking the dog, that's great. We're all different.

Also, don't neglect to follow RunKeeper's suggestions and turn off Wi-Fi, etc. to get a more accurate track. It makes a difference. RTFM.

Hey, you can press the lock button at the top and your screen will shut off, and as long as RK is still running, it won't terminate. Just unlock when you're done and RK is still going. I do it all the time.

Okay, I'm going to try it again on my run tomorrow night. It'll be the first time I've been able to have any idea how far we go when we run on the greenbelt because there aren't streets to plug into mapmyrun. Y'know, maybe I'll even do a test walk around the block at school tomorrow to try it out.. actually do some advance prep, make sure I understand what I'm doing BEFORE I'm ready to start running. *Wild* idea, I know.

Weight training and cardio are completely different, both being important for overall health and fitness.

Also, I suspect a lot of runners would tell you that running isn't just about getting exercise.

I love running but I have an IT band problem that makes running painful. I still run circuits at gym in between supersets. I miss running outside :(

I gained back a few pounds, even with working out. I need to add more cardio and eat better. I like to swim, too-I need to swim more. I do some ellipital but it is so boring and it is not as good of a workout as running, esp. since I have to keep the resistance light foe my knee.

I still like running best. I love the Mizuno running shoes.
