Just got an email from Apple about testing the push notifications for the AIM developer preview.

As a developer actively working with iPhone OS, we would like your help in a private test of the Apple Push Notification service. For this test, we have selected AOL's AIM Developer Preview for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers.
To participate, we ask that you follow these steps:
1.
Download AIM Developer Preview for iPhone OS 3.0 from the iTunes Store via your desktop by entering this unique redemption code in the 'Redeem' section of iTunes, found under the 'Quick Links' section:

Note: the functionality of the application will expire in seven days.
2.
Install the application on a development device running iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed by synching it to iTunes. This application can only be installed on devices running iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed.
3.
Launch the application and accept to receive Push Notifications when prompted. You can log in with any existing AOL, AIM, .mac or MobileMe account.
4.
If you do not receive notifications from the app within 48 hours after installation, let us know. (https://bugreport.apple.com/)

got it too. super duper excited haha. i'm loading the gm release on my phone now, so i haven't had a chance to check it out just yet. This will make the lack of BG processes easier to swallow.

Yep I just got it. I wouldn't have even checked my email if you didn't post this. I am glad they are testing it more.

The push notifications on AIM are awesome. They show up instantly, I was on my laptop and the iPhone, and the notification on the phone came through the same time the message on the laptop did. I did notice though, if I was using Safari or anything else on the internet, I didn't get them...Any one else?

I was just going to say the same thing. I was on my laptop too and the second you send it the phone pops up with the notification almost literally at the same time. I didn't check that, give me a sec I'll try it. If it won't then we need to tell apple so they can fix it.

Yeah if safari is loading something it takes a few more seconds, but I still get i. Even with safari open it still takes a sec or two more, but nothing terrible.

gotta say, i'm liking this. although the aim notification's annoying. Man, cut/paste, mms, tethering, blah blah blah, can't set customer text tones. Apple's in ability to let users make apple products their own, FTL.

sidenote: I've never seen someone use FTL (for the loss) before on any forum... so if I truly am the first (i highly doubt it) you're welcome :)

I'm liking that it has its own sound for the alert though, I wasn't sure how that would work after the AP news test.

can i try it?

The codes are only going to registered developers. You would have to get one of them to give up their code to download the app.

Yeah I was figuring by the sound of the AP news one that each one would be different. The ESPN one they showed during the keynote monday had a tone that just lets you know it's espn. I like that they will all be different so you don't even have to look at the phone and you will know what it is.

No unfortunately they give codes that can only be used once. So unless a dev didn't use theirs and are going to give it to you you won't be able to get it.

I've never been a fan of the standard aim tone. If I could set it to something else, I'd like it a lot better.

Another thing I liked was that I sent myself a couple(meaning like 30) messages back to back and you don't have to press 'close' for every pop up window, just for one. I was worried that with push if you got several at once you'd have to close every single one.

i figured i wasn't the first and i do post on quite a few forums, but most of the ones i read aren't a fan of the IMO's and the FTW's. they're more dry people.

with this new trial feature, do you think AOL will start using push on thier mail accounts for mobile devices like the iphone?

Unless they make an AOL mail app with push notifications since push notifications are different from push mail.
