View Full Version : No 3.0 software on Iphone 3Gs

I went to AT&T today and they said that I would have to go home and update the iPhone 3Gs when I get it because it will not come with the 3.0 software already on it. They said the reasoning behind this was because the phones were made before the software was available can anyone confirm this accusation?

That's interesting. I wouldn't be shocked, but if that's the case, they really are concerned with getting the 3GS to the market quick, aren't they? Either that or 3.0 development ran behind schedule.

Oh well, I'll download it ahead of time just to be safe. Thanks for the heads-up.

I don't think anyone here will be able to confirm that without getting a 3G S in hand. However, I do think the 3G S will come with 3.0 loaded - by the time they'll need to start shipping them to stores, they could have loaded the gold master version of 3.0 on all of the new ones waiting at the factory to be shipped. Plus, I have very low confidence in the knowledge of AT&T reps when it comes to the iPhone, or just about anything, for that matter.

True. Up10ad said the GM was dated June 4th. They probably had time.

This isn't like apple, they will want you to be able to run all the 3.0 features immediately. 2.2.1 shouldn't even be compatible with the 3GS, do you think they made a 2.2.1 version just for the 3GS so we can update it off of it. They could have spent that time getting 3.0 on it.

3.0 will have been up for 2 days, how quick before you think we will have 3.0.1 or 3.1, we might have to update. I agree though, I think it will ship with 3.0, didn't Phill Schiller say it would ship with 3.0 in the keynote? No 3.0 no video, no mms, and all the other stuff they showed off.

They will probably ship them next week or at the very end of this week, so they have time to be updating and shipping them out as they finish. I would say by July we will at least have 3.0.1. And whenever at&t finally gets their stuff together they will release a carrier update to at least add mms. I think he said it would come with 3.0, well I remember the commercial showed it with 3.0 on it. And the iphone 3GS was only ever compared to being on 3.0 with the speed comparisons messages launched 2.1x faster and sunspider javascript benchmark was 15 seconds on the iphone 3GS running 3.0

I thought for sure that in the keynote, it was stated that the 3G S would ship with 3.0

Just like the V1 shipped with 1.0 and the 3G shipped with 2.0, the 3GS will ship with 3.0. The new phone never uses the os from the previous phone.

I think it's easy to make statements like that about Apple, because in some regards they are pretty predictable. When thinking about it that way, it would be very "unApple" to not have the 3.0 software preinstalled on the new device.

On something like the 3GS coming with 3.0 predictable, yes. But with them releasing the 3GS in mid June is showing that dates are becoming less predictable. Although I think the early release just might have to do with the Pre, it still shows they are willing to change release dates.

rember apple has the final copy of 3.0 before anyone else does. They prob have offical 3.0 on the iphone 3gS's right now

Its on the 3GS right now. No question. It has to be. Even if its GM version its on there. I mean think how long ago beta 5 came out.

This would make the first 3.0.1 release pretty quick after launch. Say a couple weeks max? Apple was probably happy enough with 3.0b5 to confidently launch it publicly, but knows it still needs some tweaking.

It will definitely come with 3.0 on it. Yeah I would say by the first week of July we would probably see a 3.0.1.
