View Full Version : How do you install the iPhone 3.0 GM Software?

I'm using a Windows Vista PC, is there anyway I can upgrade my iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3.0 GM software for developers without jailbreaking it?

Keep in mind...

I don't have a developer account and never used jailbreak on the phone.

I can't seem to find out how to install it anywhere (searched a couple sites already.)

Do you have to have an Apple computer?

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

You need to either be a dev, or have your phone registered under a dev's account. You can use either a mac or a pc. Hope this helps!

I heard that the GM release worked for people who didn't have accounts too.....is that information false?

There were people here that tried it and were able to download it without being registered.

Download it and install it? From what I've gathered, you could download from a leaked source, but when you went to install you'd get a "Your Phone is not registered for this upgrade" type message.

Someone offered to register two people(only those two people) if they downloaded it and it gave them that message. Neither needed to be registered so the GM release doesn't seem to require you to be registered to a dev account. I don't remember which thread it was where those people tried it but it was a GM one. Before you install it copy your UDID(click serial # in itunes when phone is connected) into somewhere you will be able to get it like an email draft or word document just in case you need to send it to someone to get registered.

I don't know anyone who can get me registered and I wouldn't feel comfortable asking anyone either

Starting here someone installed it and didn't need to be registered:
http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-software/3-0-gm-seed-available-on-dev-site-48068-4.html#post455185

And a few pages on there is another person who didn't need to be registered. It isn't that much longer until the final release, so I guess to be safe just wait unless you hear more confirmation that you don't need to be registered.

Yeah but it was nice having it way back in march  Maybe most people won't realize it and you will get it first then get everyone else to run to their computer and update.

I'm being adventurous (I've had a beer or two) and I'm going for it. If I hit a snag, so be it. I like solving mishaps

Just make sure the file ends in .ipsw and you hold shift/option + update and find the ipsw then open it. It should be for a 3G - iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

I learned that from my jailbreaking days. It's booted up and going good. Synced quickly and seems fine so far

What I don't understand is how do I get the ipsw file onto my iPhone from my Windows Vista PC?

I can't seem to find step by step instructions on how to install it. Can anyone help explain how to install?

Also, for those who went ahead and installed without a developer account, is it working for you?

And make sure you are installing the .ipsw and not the .dmg which won't work. If you still have the dmg use something like PowerISO to extract the ipsw. Then hold shift + click update/restore and open the ipsw. Once it is open itunes will take it from there.

You cannot restore to 2.2 through iTunes because the baseband is updated and cannot be downgraded. There are ways to downgrade down from 3.0, but that is a lot more to explain.

Anything else I need to know before I try this?

Any numbers I had to get off my phone incase it screws up (read somewhere about a UDID # or something like that)? Do I perform a back up before I do this? Or can I just sync after it's installed (because it wont be able to read the back up since it's from a different version OS right?

I was able to successfully upgrade two iPhone 3G's to the 3.0GM firmware. All I had to do was hold alt down on my mac and browse to the file. So far the only function that I have found the doesn't work is previewing a movie in the iTunes store.

Mine is working great. No problems, pretty smooth operation so far. All my apps seem to run fine.

Just did 2 more iPhone 3G's from my office. Those went smooth as well.

It should and if not you can still download from the apple site and apply it to your phone like you do with betas and the GM release.

Just got done installing 3.0 and I just wanted to thank everyone in this thread for their help! I really appreciate it! :)

For anyone having doubts about installing the software, it's completely easy and can not harm or brick your phone in any way. The installation is easy, there really is no need to wait until the 17th...Go ahead and install if you want it sooner! :)

Well I did it! So far so good. However the voice memo app crashed the first time I used it... but since then it seems ok. I really wish MMS would work.

Yeah, I have to wait. I also noticed my wifi was a little flaky (cuts in an out) for a while, even thought I know I had signal and it was not flaky before I upgraded. I will test it again tonight at home to see if it continues to cut in an out.

I did an update and it was quick and easy and everything working including mms. The following day I did a sync and now I have lost my mms. I reinstalled the ipcc file but mms still gone. Guess now I will have to wait till ATT gets around to turning it back on.
