So I just tried this out. Once you turn it on on your phone, sign into mobile me, click your account info icon and there is a find my iPhone tab. Locates your iPhone as described, I sent a message to my phone, received it immediately, and once I viewed it on the phone I got an email telling me the message had been received.

If you have mobileme give it a shot. It seems to work even with location services turned off, I'll have to clear my cache and my cookies and try it again and see for sure.

Luckily my wife doesn't know my mobileme password, otherwise I'd be getting messages on my phone all the time...."What the hell are you doing there....You better get your ass home!"

Yeah they made it sound like this takes full control of the device no matter how your settings are. Unless it is off there is no way to avoid it. He even said it doesn't matter if it is in silent mode. You could mess with someone really bad if you had access to their account. I hope that chime keeps going until you input some code or hook it up to your primary itunes. I don't have mobileme but for this feature I might have to.

They probably can but apple will block it now that they are offering the feature for extra cash.

The tone will sound for 2 minutes and it's optional. When I was playing with it I was listening to the iPod and I didn't know if the tone would stop once I read the message, so I didn't use it.

With all the new APIs we may see something like this from google, hell AT&T will do it for all your phones, for a price.

It is still a nice feature, but I wish that made the sound until it was connected back to your itunes or that you put some password in. I wish it locked it out from everything like using it or restoring it until you did something to take that lock off.

I just don't think apple will approve it since they want you to use their service for a fee and you need something that will be able to take control of the phone which I don't think any non apple product can do. I do think with all the at&t apps coming out that we will see an at&t turn by turn navigation app similar to the standard one some of their phones that will use their pay subscription service.

Cool feature. I'll probably get mobileme just for it.
