You didn't pay the $600 for the 3G so your contract is stuck for 2 years if I remember correctly.

The original iPhone wasn't subsidized - everyone paid full price for it.

so i cant just add on 2 more years, making my contract 3 years, and get the iphone3Gs subsidized?

Short answer is no, you can pay extra and get it, but you can't get it for the subsidized price.

i can sell my current 16GB white iphone 3g for $400, should i sell and buy iPhone3Gs 16GB white for $399? basically i will see no loss or gain but i will get a new phone and all new features.

I honestly do not thing you will get $400 for your current 3G. Old customers already have 3G and new customers can get a 32 gig for $299

can you imagine working at an AT&T store and how many questions like this you would get each day? wow i think that would be enough to make me quit.

Yeah, it can't be worse than working with bodily fluids though.

It's gonna feel a lot like that around here for a while...

I cant believe how many threads there are with the same questions...is it just me or are there more than the last 2 iPhone releases?

You were expecting to get it for the unsub cost? I knew long ago I wouldn't be eligible.

It's more complicated each year. The first one was cut and dry pricing (at least for the first month). The second one didn't have upgrade eligibility factored in because the V1's weren't subsidized. Now we've got a whole primordial pot of iPhone stew brewing and the confusion has reached a high point.

Yeah, it's a hot mess. I do remember all this being pointed out last year, however.

Funny how AT&T works.

You didnt pay full retail for the 3G so you have the subsidized price and a 2 year contract.
You can pay extra and get the 3GS and AT&T will add another 2years to your contract??

The 2-year extension along with the unsubsidized price is the ONLY thing in this equation that doesn't really make any sense.

It's still a subsidized price, just not as much as if you were eligible.

New and eligible: with 2 yr contract
199
299

Not eligible: with 2 year contract
399
499

No contract
599
699

So there is a 200 dollar gap between all price points. basically your looking at a subsidy of 200 dollars per year.

The quick and easy would be to sell your current 8gig 3G iPhone for $200-$300 (depending what you can get), and upgrade to the 16gig 3Gs for $399...

it's what I'd do, if I were anxious to upgrade to the new hotness...

i'd take a short sell on my current 3G (and put MAJOR emphasis on the fact that they'd be under "no contract" to the buying party, that tends to help in the sale), and then just add the difference, for the 3Gs..

you'd essentially be paying about $99-$199 (again, depending what you can get for your 3G).. which is what you'd pay as a "new customer"... but again, this would all be contingent upon the sale of your current 8gig 3G...
