View Full Version : Camping out

So with the ability to pre-order online and have the iPhone 3GS delivered by the 19th, am I gonna be the only person camping out at an apple store next Thursday? Provided they still allow it like they did with iDay 1 and 2, that is.
Who else is with me? :2cool:

That date was misleading. The confirmation emails show that the ship date is the 19th with a delivery date within 5 business days.
I think the lines will still be long since people want them on release day.

Funny, I live about 6 blocks from the Apple Store but I still refuse to wait in any line. I chose to have mine shipped. LOL..Oh well, I will probably still go over there to look and in the meantime buy some accessories for the 3GS.

I actually think the lines will be a bit smaller this year (but still fairly long).

Well time to clear up my schedule for thursday and friday next week LOL. If you guys are waiting in line, which stores would you be at? I'll be at the Omaha, Nebraska store.

I agree, shorter than previous years, but still long.

Agreed! I don't think it's going to be as hectic and crazy like the last two releases. I never camped out for either release. There are so many AT&T stores in this valley. Not to mention 4 apple stores.

I'll be in an AT&T store line. I wonder if they will swap my numbers between my two phones or tell me it's too busy? Hmmm, maybe I'll swap then a day or so ahead of the release, that's an idea!

I'd camp out if, you know, I didn't have to WORK. I'll get it Monday 6/22 after work at the local Apple or AT&T store.

I'll probably wait in line at a local AT&T store with my niece's boyfriend. I called him after the keynote and asked him what time he'd be hitting the store. He said, "Oh, I guess around opening time..."
I said, "Son, you obviously can't do this yourself; I'll take you under my wing and we'll do this together."
He's an iPhone newbie.

Good call with the "reserve" idea. In my case, I want to talk to them about the plan and stuff before picking it all out online because of the family plan issue...so I'll have to wait...

I'm hearing two different release dates... June 17th, and now June 19th, and both from reputable sources. I think it will arrive on Friday, the 19th, but what do you make of the date June 17th?
http://www.appleinsider.com/
Perhaps the 17th is the release date for the OS update.
Saiko

haha yes, June 17th is the release date for the 3.0 OS.

"iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis." Is why I don't think they'll let you reserve them in store.

This evening, as soon as I read this:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/06/10/apple_stores_to_open_8_a_m__att_stores_7_a_m_for_i phone_3g_s.html
I decided to place a preorder with my local AT&T store to get in that 7:00 AM queue. I suspect AT&T lines may be longer than Apple lines this year due to that discrete announcement. So I preordered a black 32 for me and a black 16 for the wife about 5 minutes later. :)
I have off the 19th, so I'll be going early (6ish) and scoping it out. If I see no lines I'll camp out in the parking lot and twitter or something. As soon as a line starts forming, I'll join in. I'll have a folding chair in the backseat if it starts early, but I am getting my new iPhones that day, damnit. :D
You have to understand, I bought my first iPhone at the price drop in September '07 and I skipped over the 3G entirely, so this is really my first iDay. I am very excited and trying not to be noobish about it, but it's hard. Can't wait...

don't want to allow for any possibility of not getting it on the 19th?

Exactly. I don't trust the ship date conundrum.
And I want a bit of the experience. I don't know how much I'll get it at the local AT&T store, but I think that's where the majority of the action will be this time around due to them opening first.

So I asked the AT&T guy what was the deal with activations this year. As I will be picking up my wife's phone (and she'll be at work with her V1), I want to take it home and activate it. He seemed to think it was going to be in-store activations this time. He said I could take her phone home, but I'd have to bring it back to activate it.
Frankly, I don't trust a word he said, because I had to show him the Apple Insider link before he knew about the early queue for preorders. He said "they'll probably tell us that tomorrow" :D

Well, I won't be camping out after all. I pre-ordered a 32G Black at my AT&T store. They have been instructed to say that they cannot guarantee that my phone will be at the store for pickup on any specific date. They can't even say that they will actually have any for sale on the 19th.
When asked if it would be possible that they would have phones for sale but that mine would not be there for pickup they said, "I hope not because if so there will be a bunch of really pissed-off people". Yeah, no sh*t.
I guess I'll just wait for the email telling me that my card has been charged and the phone has been shipped. That will be the clue as to when it will arrive. They will be opening at 7am for pre-orders (if they have arrived), and 9am for customers.

I just talked to an Apple support rep who told me that pre-ordering the phone means it will be on your doorstep on the 19th.
I called AT&T yesterday and told them my situation which truley is:
I am leaving for a vacation on the 20th, ordered my phone online hoping it would be here the 19th, or 20th latest before I leave. My goal was to have it changed to an in-store pickup. The lady told me no one ever made a request like that before....ooookkkkkk. So she said let me research. After 5 minutes of hold I was told it is not possible. Once ordered online the only thing they can do is cancel the order. Otherwise it is shipped to the address provided online. And she assured me no iPhone's are shipped before the 19th. She also told me it takes 3-5 days and it is federal shipping so they leave it at your door if you are not there. I live in an apartment and can pretty much gaurentee its gone after 1 day. Normally I would cancel, but I ordered it through the BING deal.
I am going to try the online chat to see if they tell me I will have it on the 19th and call out this chick from the premier line that told me it wouldent.

Yeah, I agree hat AT&T is clueless and you can't count on anything said at a store. However, neither AT&T or Apple would ship an iPhone without signature required.

I was first in line at the AT&T store on iDay 1, and got applause from the rest of the crowd when I walked out with my new toy.
iDay 2 was considerably more difficult, due to the server meltdowns. I waited at the Apple store that time.
