Other than the answer 'Because they can'. What is the justification of charging iPod Touch owners $10 for a software update that iPhone users get for free?
I don't understand it!

its not that hard to bypass the $10 dollar fee if you don't feel it is justified. i am new but most places frown upon that type of discussion, if it is cool around here let me know and i will post it up. i am new though and i don't want to piss anyone off :)

it's ridiculous, but consistent with their previous software upgrades for ipods.

I too agree that it is ridiculous. Especially considering some of the biggest updates, such as MMS and Video (with the 3.0 on the new 3GS) aren't even able to be used on an iPod Touch.

Man, you really want to have your cake and eat it too. You're not paying a monthly service plan to cover some of the development cost! Why should it be free? A lot of hard work went into it.

well, the service plan money goes to ATT, right?

That's a good point, if Apple don't get any of the monthly charge from At&t then that makes the justification even harder.
Don't get me wrong I understand the free economy and that they can charge what like just wondered if Apple had ever put their official spin on the charge?
Craig
It wouldn't surprise me if some of the monthly service charge went to Apple. If that's the case, charging for a Touch upgrade would give them justification since they'll make it back from all the iPhone users through Apple's piece of the service charge pie.
It's worth it just for the copy and paste.
It works great!!

it shouldn't matter if it's $10. I bet alot of people have spent more than $10 on pointless apps, I've spent about $60 on apps and only have myspace mobile, mafia wars, and facebook currently on my iPhone and those are all free lol so it's worth the 10 extra dollars for iPod touch software

If apple does get a cut of each iphone(r)'s plan, then $10 for the touch seems like a good deal lol.

I don't know, since you paid the $200 (or whatever it cost ya) to get the device. That should include the updates. Dis just my opinion though

I actually has to do with accounting rules on why they can't give it away. At least thats the reason I read.
