Hey all. I am currently on a v1 iPhone and looking to possibly upgrade to the 3GS. Here is my question:
I'm on a family plan for AT&T so the minutes are already taken care of. I know the 3G's data plan was more than the v1 plan. What was the cost of that plan and the original v1 plan?
Is that the same difference that I will experience from v1 to 3GS?
And is it cheaper to do a "family iPhone" plan...if that is even possible? I'd consider giving over my v1 instead of selling it, in that case.
Thank you all so much for your help!!!

V1 was 20$ with 200 texts 3g is 30$ with no texts. I think its 5$ 200 txts 15 for 1000txts and 20 for unlimited 3gs i don't know.

I don't believe we've gotten a whole lot of information on plans yet, but I'll keep an eye out.
I'd guess we can make the assumption that the plans will be similar to those of the 3G.

Well right now I guess I pay the $20 for the v1 but I also have 1,400 text messages for the family plan - so I'm assuming that can stick as is?
Am I correct in thinking that means I'd be paying $10 more going from $20 to $30? Doesn't sound like a huge deal to me...yet...
Is a 3GS upgrade almost a must-do for a v1 user at this point? I'm trying to think what would come out another year from now and if it would be worth it to wait...?

For anyone that has the V1, I would go with the new phone. As a 3G owner, there isn't enough in it for me to upgrade but I would if I had the V1. Worth the price IMO.

dturner, I think I agree with you. The 3G speed alone was a good reason to go from v1 to 3G...add that to the extra-speedy processor & memory and all the other features...I just don't think I could wait 12 more months. And I really don't know what they would come out with that I'd be mad about at that point.
Any more advice RE the pricing of the data plans? Am I correct that I'd basically be paying $10 more per mo.?
You guys on here are great, thanks.

Yes, going from V1 to 3GS, I would definetely agree its worth the upgrade. If your a 3G owner, I'd wait.

I ordered the 3GS from the Apple online store and it appears that the 3GS data plan is the same as 3G:
Rate Plan:
No Voice Plan Changes
Data Plan for iPhone ......... $30.00
- Data Plan for iPhone
200 ......... $5.00
- iPhone Text Messaging 200

Very cool. Hopefully that means all I'm doing is switching from $20 to $30. I bought my last iPhone at AT&T and liked that experience...is that better or should I go to the Apple Store or do it online? Any advantages one way or another?

If you pre order on line, it will arrive to you on 6/19 and the shipping is free.

I actually just pulled up my account info and it says (no surprise) I qualify for the $199. The issue is, when I get to the next step, it inserts TWO $18 upgrade fees.
1) I think it is B.S. that I have to pay an upgrade fee when I got my v1 for full price without any subsidy.
2) I am truly hoping I can keep my "family plan" 1,400 text messages and not have to pay more money for texts. I don't see why I couldn't, but that would be insanity if I had to pay $25 more per month to upgrade.

So I take it I'll prolly be the only person camping out for one. With as fun as the first camp out was, I can't resist doing it again! :tounge:

This is the exact thread I was looking for b/c I just don't know what going from a V1 is going to cost. The beauty of the original iPhone was and still is that it only costs $29 a month for unlimited data. I am on a family plan and split minutes and texts with my family. If I now go to the 3GS I am under the impression it'll cost $30 just for the data and then another 39.99 for the minutes.

You can keep your current voice plan and just add the $30 data plan + txt plan. If you currently have an unlimited family txt plan, all you need to add it the $30 data plan.

OK so I looked at the bill. For the iPhone v1, I am paying $30/month for data + 1,500 text.
Now the data alone is $30 and the 1,500 text are $X (not sure exactly). Hopefully only $10.
I thought my text were shared on the family plan, but it is really just for the iphone.
I'm curious about the iphone family plan though...because maybe I'll give my v1 to my mom (I pay for her phone too). Depends how much the data is.

There is no "iPhone Family Plan", but here's what you can do. The V1 data plan is $20/mo and includes 200 txt. You can keep your current voice plan and if you want add txt to the family plan or a txt package to your iphone since the V1 has 200 included in the data plan already.

Ah, I see. Well that is kind of irrelevant right now, agree? Or do you think I could do the same with 3GS and just pay $30 and then add text to the family plan?

According to this, the 1,500 texts are $15!!!!!!!!!!

That's freaking insane. Under family plans, here are the text rates:
iPhone Text Messaging 200 - $5/month
Messating 200 - $5/month
Messaging 1500 - $15/month
iPhone Text Messaging 1500 - $15/month
iPhone Text Messaging Unlimited $20/month
