View Full Version : Current 3G owners -- will we qualify for the 3GS?

The AT&T prices stated for the 3GS are for "new and qualifying customers"... I wonder if that includes current 3G owners? Since I purchased the 3G last year, I technically have another year left before I "qualify" for an upgrade. If AT&T doesnt include current 3G owners, they're going to be missing out on a lot of buyers wishing to upgrade.

I don't think we will know about that until later as June 19th approaches.

The bad news is already on Apple's site in the fine print...

"For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). "

And I heard something before that the data plan will go down in price? I don't think that will happen, does anyone know anything about that.
My upgrade status still says December 2009 :(
I bet they will hold us to the upgrade eligibility date.

Looks like the 3G buyers are SOL.

3G buyers are essentially SOL

AT&T probably can't justify that credit, as they did last time.. Nothing MAJOR changed about the phone that quantifies the need for it.. a better camera.. and video??

everything is essentially the same with the 3.0 update... yes?

I went through the pre-order process on the Apple site and after checking my AT&T account, it offered the following:

Payment of the balance on your AT&T account will qualify you for an iPhone at the full retail price. Use *PAY to check your balance and pay your bill from your AT&T phone. On 12/24/2009, you may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade.
$499.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
$599.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
$699.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

That's the way I feel about it. 3.0 will give us pretty much a new phone anyway. My speed is fine in my area and any place I have traveled. I don't use the camera that much, that's what my Nikon is for.:tounge: So I don't see anything the the new phone to make me want to jump on it, especially at those prices.

Yeah, frankly i think its total BS and they are just cornering off and eradicating the 25 Million pre existing iphone users. I personally am dissapointed. And i hope the backlash is unlike anything ATT has EVER experienced. They need to get their **** together on a whole lot of fronts regarding the Iphone

The 16/32GB prices are bad enough, but are they serious about $400 for an 8GB 3G. That is insane.

I just cracked the screen on my 3g, so I was really looking forward to replacing it. I'm still looking forward to replacing it, just not with AT&T. They are foolish to not allow an upgrade. I've been done with cell carriers for less. I believe they will be losing me over this. Shame! I love the Iphone. I just hate the AT&T business practices.

I have been with ATT for many years and was always happy with the service, but you state my feeling to the T. ATT is becoming the iPhone killer. I have a year or so left with ATT and in that time will be watching the Pre on the EIC site. ATT may have lost me also.

I personally am very upset at the fact that we won't be able to upgrade like we did with the 3G last summer. I don't understand why that summer we were able to upgrade where as now, an upgrade is out of the picture.

I think it's a bunch of bull.

Just called AT&T and she told me I am eligible for the upgrade to the new iPhone, with an $18.00 upgrade fee. I can get the iPhone at the advertised prices they gave at the keynote. I've had my 3G since it first came out last July.

I'm happy - this is the info Apple pulled from AT&T on my account as far as pre-ordering the new iPhone:

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 12/12/2009.

$299.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)

Let's see here:

Buy a 32GB iPhone 3GS for $699
OR
Add a line for a 32gb iPhone 3GS for $299 + $170 Termination Fee + $30 data and extra line fee = $499

I'll just add another line, I'm willing to pay $170 so I don't have to extend my contract. That way I can hopefully switch to Verizon in 2011, AT&T SUCKS!!

I can tell you why, but still don't agree with it. We were able to upgrade to the 3G because the V1 was an unsubsidized phone. We got the 3G at the subsidized price so now ATT says you have to be eligible for an upgrade. This is standard in the phone industry, but IMO the iPhone is a little different. It is the same phone each year with improvements. It isn't like coming out with the Bold then the Storm, ect. Those are different phones, so I can see where you should have to be eligible in order to get each one at a subsidized price. The iPhone is the iPhone and I don't see why if you own one, you can't get the next one at the subsidized price. As I have stated elsewhere, ATT is becoming the iPhone killer.

I don't know if I get what your asking but you can cancel a line 31 days after you open it. If you cancel within 30 days then you have to return the phone. I already have a family plan with 4 phones on it so I wont need to open another account, i'm just gonna swap the sim cards with my current line when the phone comes in and then cancel the extra line 31 days later.

I just called AT&T as well, and he put me on hold and spoke to his manager. He said they will be receiving news from Apple, and they will know on the 15th or 16th what the details on subsidized pricing would be for current iPhone 3G owners.

He said more than likely, they are going to allow iPhone 3G users to buy the iPhone 3GS at the subsidized price. He said he just got a call last week from a 2G iPhone owner that didn't have an upgrade on his account for another year, but AT&T still gave him the subsidized price on the iPhone 3G.

He said he couldn't promise anything at this point, but most likely they will be offering the subsidized price to customers that already own an iPhone.

The confusion stems from not having any situations to look to for reference, because the iPhone 2G was never sold at a subsidized price, therefore, customers that bought the 2G did not use an upgrade, which meant they still had that unused upgrade on their account by the time the 3G came out. However, the customer representative I spoke to, seems to think that they will be consistently allowing iPhone users to upgrade to the next iPhone for the lower price regardless of whether or not they have an upgrade on their plan.

He said they will be sending out an email, and if not, call back on the 16th, and they will know for sure.

I've checked into it before. I'm not eligible for early upgrade because I only have one line and it's the lowest minutes plan.

I'll try to get the $200 refunded if they do make all 3G'ers eligible for early upgrade, but I didn't want to hold my breath on that because I honestly don't think it's going to happen, so I went ahead and ordered it.

Regards,
Hell no. They aren't charging us more, they are charging us the retail value of the phone. I've already paid the $499 because I know how this works. The phone is worth more than the subsidized cost. If you aren't eligible, it's because they haven't yet recouped their loss from your previous subsidized phone.

i have never been lied to so blatantly by authorized dealer rep, of any kind! even auto sales rep will tell you when a new model will be out. and if they reply they do not know, it's a sign to do more homework.

imho, this is complete bull from ATT and apple.
