View Full Version : Installing Boxee on Apple TV

I'm tired of the restrictions and considering installing Boxee on my Apple TV. I have noticed that my (stock) Apple TV wakes from sleep once weekly. I presume this is to check for updates. Now my concern with hacking it, is it waking and automatically updating, thus removing the hack. I have checked and there is no option to disable checking for updates.
Once Boxee is installed, does it add an option to "never check for updates"?
Will it play videos from multiple computers on the network? Stock Apple TV's can only have one computer paired with the Apple TV at a time.

There was a post on lifehacker about it. Let try to find it.
EDIT: here it is

I don't know if that will answer your question but theres a lot of info in there.

i had it installed for about a week. It was WAY too slow and buggy for me. Maybe it's better now.
With boxee, you can stream from ANY network location (so, yes, multiple computers), but it doesn't work as well as the stock appleTV streaming.
And the AppleTV won't auto-update. For any software installation, you have to agree to the terms and conditions, so i wouldn't worry about that.

Ok, maybe I'll just keep it stock then and just keep converting the files. I streams so much better than my PS3 and I want to keep it that way.

i don't know why it's so difficult to code streaming... i would think it's just a matter of setting a proper buffer for smooth playback.

I did the Apple TV ATV Flash hack yesterday, and love it. It still streams beautifully. Now, I'm just transferring my non MPEG-4 movies to the Apple TV HD via FTP, it's only taking me about 10 minutes for a compressed 700 MB movie. You can also stream them or use an external HD if you want. This program adds a ton of features. The best thing is, it doesn't change the interface, it just adds to it. While making the USB file, you have to check the box that says "Do not autoupdate", or you run the risk of having to install it again as the Apple TV's automatically check for updates weekly (although I don't think they update on their own).

Cool. It sounds like they've really improved upon it since I tried it last. I may give it another shot at some point. For now I'm content, though.

This is a huge improvement from what I've heard. I anticipate using it a lot more now that I'm not limited to one format.
