Contacts lost downgrading from 3.0

And I backed up my iPhone but it said it can not back up to an older version of the software.. so is there a way around this? All my contacts are on 3.0, can someone please help? Thanks.

Only thing I can suggest is sync the contacts to outlook or address book on the mac, then reinstall the OS then sync with those contacts. Unfortunately I'm sure there is no way to put a 3.0 backup on a 2.2.1 phone.
