Ok dumb question for you experts.

I want to buy an iPhone from someone who doesn't know much about iPhones (a non-geek relative). How can he/she find out what generation it is? They don't have service on it.

The Silver metal back with black at the bottom is a 2G or Edge iPhone.

The black/white plastic back is a 3G

The first generation had a metal back. The second generation, plastic. The first generation was only one color - metallic silver. Second generation, white or black.

Other distinctions include memory size (16 gb only in 2nd generation), and of course 3G in second generation.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. It's definitely a 3G. Ok where in the menu can he/she tell if it's an 8G or 16G phone?

it will say in the writing on the back of the iPhone either 8gb or 16gb. White was only offered in 16 gb so if its white thats a quick answer.

I don't think that is true.

When I bought mine (8 gb black) the Apple kid tried to upsell me to a 16 gb, saying that he thought they were out of black ones but he still had one available.

The 8 GB 3G is only available in Black.
The 16 GB 3G is available in black or white.

You're wrong. There first generation iPhone cam in a 16GB model. I know for sure, my friend has one.

I bought my 16GB V1 and like a few months later the 3G was announced :(
It came out in February.

You can check in Settings, general, about
It will tell you the capacity there. If its an 8GB it will say like 7.2GB

The 8 GB 3G is only available in Black.
The 16 GB 3G is available in black or white.
This pretty much sums it all up.

watch out those cloned iPhone...
some of them look exactly same including the apple logo on the back.
remember...the real iphone's battery is not changeable, the real iphone's screen won't work if you use a pen to push...etc
