I can optimize my PC with disc cleanup, disc defragging etc. I can optimize my Internet speed by cleaning temp files, deleting history, etc.
What can I proactively do to optimize my Iphone 3G?
Thanks in advance.

One thing is to reboot it occasionally.

Thanks. Any idea of what impact the reboot has on the iphone?

Reboot can help restore a clean memory which can help with things such as lag and other little glitches that creep in through constant use. It's the same principle as rebooting a computer (especially a PC) in order to make it run faster and more smoothly.

Rebooting is about the only thing you can do to optimize performance. Optimizing battery life on the other hand is a different topic. You'll probably find yourself tweaking settings to increase battery life rather than performance.
You can also hold down the powerbutton until the slide bar appears then(EDIT Release the power button)and hold down the home button to clear memory. It's a bit quicker then rebooting.
Closing web pages when you get more then 5 open speeds the browser up.

Nice trick Chex, very nice.

@Chex, I find a hard reboot takes longer than a soft reboot.

Yes, that's why I suggested the soft reboot, and I don' know if that's even technically a reboot.

I know about the soft reboot, but what is a hard reboot, how is it done?

cherii1216, A soft reboot is sliding to power off. A hard reboot is done by holding the home and power power button but ignoring the "slide to turn off" and just waiting for it to turn off on it's own.
alwayslearning, PC's need frequent maintenance to keep them running good (Defragmenting, Cleaning the registry, etc). The Mac OS doesn't tie it's self in knots like Windows does, it's basically maintenance free. Nothing other than daily rebooting is recommended.

But you suggested a third way, which I think works pretty well.

Yes maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough...so ther is no confusion .
Hold down the power button till the slide bar appears...then release the power and hold down the home button and it should clear the memory and bring you back to the home screen...differing from a reboot where you continue to hold the power button till it reboots.
I should have explained it better. I edited my first post to "release the power button".

The other thing you can do is "force quit" apps by holding the home button while in the app for like 10 seconds. This has helped me with my safari speeds. You can also go to settings, Safari, and then clear history cookies and cache are all options. (to answer your original question)

Anybody else notice this no longer works after the 3.0 upgrade?

I noticed I couldn't do it for the iPod function. Interesting that it's not working with other programs. I'll have to test.

It's changed now :)
You have to press the power button until you get the slider, then press the Home button until the app quits.
