Resetting my phone with itunes?

I'm about to jailbreak and also trying to find out how to factory reset through itunes and can't find info.
How do I reset the phone thru itunes? Is it thru my laptop or thru the phone itself? thanks

When your phone is plugged into iTunes a window within iTunes pops up with information about the phone itself.

In the middle of the screen to the right there are two tabs. Update and Restore.

The update tab speaks for itself, it contact apple servers and donwloads the latest Firmware (FW) to your handset.

The Restore button)- imagine reformatting your HD, it's the simplest way i can put it. It wipes the phone clean and then reinstalls fresh new FW to your device. As of right now it will install 2.2.1


Sometimes people have to restore because there phone starts to act in a strange manner. It is always suggested that when 'new' FW is released to Restore and install the new FW. The phone will be nice and fresh for the new FW.
