On the front page here (http://www.everythingicafe.com/articles/2009/5/30/purported-3rd-generation-iphone-in-the-wild-in-hong-kong/).

A Hong Kong site (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.umpcfever.com%2Fnews%2F%3Fposti d%3D2514&sl=zh-CN&tl=en&history_state0=) is claiming to have had access to the 3rd-generation iPhone and has posted the following pictures showing the camera's new auto-focus feature, the digital compass application, and more.

I don't know about that. Everything seen is all software related so we really cant be sure of anything based off of that.

Yeah, and what's with the metal band in the second picture. I hope its not the new phone because the metal band is kinda lame.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure this is not the new iphone because if you look at more images on the site, the phone was jailbroken (it has the %battery in the top) and as far as I know, you can't get that yet. I would think that it is just the final release of the 3.0 software and they somehow got a hold of it.

My phone has never been jailbroke and I have the battery % on Beta 5 ;)

Um how? Did you have the battery % before 3.0?

Either way the battery % is not on 3.0 so this is not a 3rd gen which would be exclusively on 3.0 final.

Actually, battery percentage is available in 3.0 - it's mentioned in this Ars Technica article here (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/04/more-iphone-30-details-leaked.ars). I'm not sure if it will be activated in the final 3.0 firmware, but developers can access it.

I think styfle was trying to say that the actual percentage symbol doesn't show up with the official 3.0 numeric battery indicator. The indicator available through SBSettings and other apps has a "%" sign.

Ah, I see. Thanks!

Like I said. Phones never been jailbroke before. My old one was. Had it replaced for battery problems and restored my new one from that backup. Had the % since the first beta. Maybe something in the backup from the old jailbreak.

Yeah it stinks they didn't get a photo of the physical unit. We've been able to see the software for a while now. Ugh. Still cool though.

Someone on macrumors said "It's the new machine in the old enclosure. A safety measure by Apple, it can be field-tested without the danger of it being spotted as "the new iPhone"." which is smart of them and would make sense, but sucks for us. To me it looks like the current 3g, and I don't know what you mean by the metal band, cause it looks like the chrome bezel that we currently have.

Its actually the other way around. When I had my phone jailbroken it had the number but no % sign then on 3.0 it started showing the % and number by the battery instead of just the number when i tapped the battery.

The greatest thing I will like about it is the compass, I can push a button and it will show me the way home when I come out of the bar. :tounge::tounge::tounge:

About what I was saying with the percentage...
I'm pretty sure that cant be the new phone because the only way to have % shown is to jailbreak 2.x.x and and then update to 3.0. But the new iphone wont be on 2.x.x and cant rollback. I just think that its likely those pictures are not the new iphone.

If its a prototype from Apple its going to have every feature they are testing. The %battery is something they are holding back for now but it is present in the firmware. They are not going to hold back any features in the new unit.

tell me what the big is about %battery? I never watch my battery, and plug it in when the red lite comes on....is that simple...

What have I been missing?

The big deal is that some people are so obsessed with playing with their iPhone (like me) that they dont know how to moderate usage with the current battery symbol. Its currently not specific enough.

The way I see it, the stock battery indicator hovers at full forever, then it's at halfway later on in the day. If it's a busy day, it will look low at the end. All I know is I get 6+ hours of usage on a charge STILL with my V1 and I'm not complaining.

i think there are way more important things to work on than the battery indicator.
