Hi,
by developing and testing our fitness tracking app iBody we have find some useful tipps to increase the battery runtime:
if you are starting the iPod app first and let play some music (endless) in the background and then start the tracking software in the foreground, you can switch off the iPhone without losing the GPS signal. The iPhone is still tracking as long as the iPod app is playing in the background.
In fact a useless feature of the iPhone (GPS receiver not stopping after switching off while music is playing) but very helpful on tracking.
We had tracking times up to 3 hours and the battery had still 25 % power.
So with this trick (and by turning off wifi and 3G) you should be able to track very long distances.
Maybe this could be helpful for some of you.
Best
