It's a simple question, and I'm not looking for any bashing regarding the ethics of doing so.

Can Apple tell if you've opened up the casing of an iPhone?

A few friends at a local genius bar say not as far as they know, but when they send the phones out for battery changes and whatnot, they don't know if apple can tell. They've never heard word from Apple that a phone wasn't eligible for a battery change because it was opened either though.

What have you guys heard?

the only thing ive heard, is about one of my friends opened his and the screws on the bottom got scratched up from the screwdriver, but apple didnt really notice when we took it in for dust under his screen and they give him a refurb

Well my issue was that a phone I got 3 weeks ago, looks like someone took sandpaper to the glass. It's not one spot where it may be rubbing either. It's edge to edge scratches that make the phone virtually unviewable. I took it in to apple and they refused to do anything. My first iPhone I had for 8 months resisted scratches and didn't have a single scratch. I returned it because the GPS was way off.

I know it's not very ethical, but I decided to sabotage the phone. I took the screen off and did some 'invisible' damage that made the phone act up, they took a look at it, and replaced it within 5 minutes for free. I immediately bought a screen protector for this one. I could care less about the back of the phone, or the chrome, as I don't use a case. It's just 'optical' quality glass is supposed to be 'scratch proof'. I'm guessing apple used this for the initial few batches of the phone, then cheaped it down to a lower quality glass to save money. I noticed my 2nd phone, and this phone also have light leaks. I can fix that on my own, but it shows that something is wrong on their end. They stepped down the quality to maximize overall profit from what I can see.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be one of those guys waiting in line all day for the next iphone. I love the phone, but they don't have my permission to **** me over.
