Before you say anything YES I did look to see if others had posted these problems but and I did read the solutions but it either didn;t work or made no sense.

Soooo somebody kindly gave me an Iphone (not 3g) 16gb as they are now on the 3g.
Itunes said software was 1.1.1 I think so I decided to put 2.2.1 (can't remember) as well thats what you are supposed to do? It is a french iphone, I'm in France at the mo, I have an Orange FR and SFR simcard I think SFR is the original. Pretty sure. However Itunes has done the whole simcard wont activate thing on me. I've done a restore blah blah same thing. Can't do it without a simcard in it because it doesn't like the no simcard so tells me to put one in. I'm going back to the UK soon so I'll be getting an 02 simcard but am I now forced to unlock/jailbreak etc.

Please bear in mind I am a simple person and jargon and me do not mix!

Jailbreak it with QuickPWN and it will activate it. After that, you can restore it to a non-jailbroken state, keep it unjailbroken, and do the Apple FW updates without locking it. This would not work with a 3G phone, they have to be jailbroken to remain unlocked.
