Jailbreaking...pros and cons

So I just got an iPhone 3G. Was considering jailbreaking it but I'm a little reluctant for fear of it crashing. Can you guys offer some pros and cons? And some jailbreaking experiences as well. Thanks!

Pro's of jailbreaking to me where running apps in the background, themes, and one touch access to settings such as bluetooth and all that. The downside to Jailbreaking, at least to me was decreased battery life and lag. The nice thing about the iPhone, if it crashes, you can set it to recovery mode and get it going again (might take a couple tries though). With 3.0 coming out, the only reason I would consider Jailbreaking would be to add themes. It covers most of the other reasons to do it. Hope that helps
