Kinda off topic but I had this conversation earlier with a friend and have been thinking about it alot. When I was going through high school, it was pretty well known that if you didn't go to college that you would probably end up a welfare bum living on the street. Those who were going to "tech schools" or going into careers that didn't require a college education were considered future bums.
With that said, today, I know an extremely high amount of people that have never stepped foot in a college and are doing far better than the dime a dozen college graduate with a bachelor's degree. Yes, I understand that if you KNOW what you want to do... doctor, lawyer, chemist, etc that it is definitely required. But how many people are going into college because it is the "thing to do" and are in an undecided major. 4 years after graduating college they are in debt for the amount of what a house would cost.
Thoughts?

Funny, I didn't have an advanced spelling course offered at my college. And hell, lets face it, who would know if a doctor could spell or not, no one can read their handwriting.

College is not a requirement for success. Success can be achieved through dedication and hard work. The education that universities can provide can be achieved at the library, you just would not have the paper to prove your studies. Many people have degrees, but not all degrees were earned through study. Some people got degrees because their school wants to have successful sports programs. Sometimes the schools lets sports players slide a little. Some professors need attention from the opposite sex. An underachieving student might get a better grade by wooing the professor. These are just a couple scenarios that happen on campuses every year. The paper that a college student gets for completing their education does not guarantee success. Just because someone has a degree does not mean they cannot be a bum. Anyone can be successful, all it takes is determination.

about it alot.
This is why you go to college. A LOT is two words. Not one. Anyway, all you are going to get on this forum are a bunch of opinions. If you really want to know the answer to your question it is simple. You just look at statistics (everyone can come up with anecdotal examples of people that have not gone to college, but have went on to be multi-millionaires). The latest statistics I could find showed that college graduates (bachelor's degree) made 63% more on average than high school graduates. Of course salary shouldn't be the only reason you go to college. The pursuit of education and learning, knowing more is something that enriches your life forever. Plus you get to have a lot of sex and drink beer :tounge:

college is a means to an end, but it is not the end itself.
the thing college does, is it teaches you skills that can help you become successful in life. some people never learn these skills, some forget them, and some don't need college to learn them. it is different for everyone. statistics indicate that if you get a college degree you will make more over the course of your life, however there is no guarantee. one of my best friends growing up and still to this day, never went to college. he now owns a business and is very happy in what he does. i chose a different route and am happy as well. it all depends on the person, but college should not depend if you are successful or not, there are many measures of success.

You don't have to go to college to become a success in the future, I know a lot of people who don't have college education but are totally rich and doing great in their business today. It's just that if you're not rich and not willing to start your own business or work a bad job for some one, then you need a Bachelor degree to work a good paying job like a Manager or something in a successful company for instance. As long as you're able to go to college, do it and don't waste that valuable time. You can ask me about that..
@styfle, I must say I laughed for about five minutes after reading that!!

One thing I've learned in college: how to deal with people and life in general.
Some classes you take and you do the bare minimum to finish with an A. Other classes you study your ass off and still fail. You have to know how to work with the professor to give them what they want. Especially if it's a writing class; learn if the professor is liberal or conservative in the first week to ensure you don't fail. :)

^^I am not sure how I made it through freshman year! lol I certainly learned to love beer.
Seriously, I needed to go to college. It was a time where I could grow up and be on my own, but not totally on my own. I got a degree in something I loved, did that job for a while, and now I do something totally different.
