View Full Version : i just killed a dog

no not on purpose (i'm not that much of a dick). to make a long story short, i went out for a ride on my bike, and hit this dog as it ran out of the yard and tried to chase me. must have hit it just right as i snapped its neck or something and it was flopping around on the ground like a fish. the owner came out screaming (i stopped of course) and called the cops on me.

i felt bad for the owner at first, i love dogs very much and have two of them, however, this person completely lost it. i was not speeding, and if the dog didn't run out and try to chase me (grossly misjudging the angle lol) that stupid thing would still be alive. either way, when the cops got there they were just as confused as i to why she called them. they asked me if i had been drinking, for my license, registration, and insurance and tried to calm the lady down. her argument was "what if it was a kid that you hit, well i love this dog like a kid!!" to which i told her "you should have trained it better then or it would still be alive". needless to say she didn't like that very much.

so my ride was cut quite short, wasn't in too much of a mood after that. i'm half bummed cause the dog is dead, but i'm also kinda glad because that lady was a stupid wench and doesn't deserve to have a dog if she can't train it to act right.

what is wrong with people today?

Sorry that happened - not an easy thing to be any part of I think.

I think you're being more than a little harsh on it though. Even if the woman did over-react quite a lot, I think that's totally forgivable because grief is a powerful emotion. You're a dog owner, you likely agree that dogs are very much like family members and it's a terrible moment when one passes away, especially in sudden circumstances like that.

I think your comment on better training etc was pretty insensitive at that moment. It may well be that better training could've prevented the accident, but there's a time and a place and all that jazz. Having said that, maybe you were more in shock than you realized and weren't thinking that well when making the comment.

And saying you're kinda glad the dog is dead = really not cool.

I love my dog like crazy, but he's a big goofy oaf who's probably capable of running in front of a car on the rare occasions he bolts out a door on his own (very rare as he gets good walks each day). I know if the worst ever happened, I would not want to hear about how better training might've helped ...

I probably would have said something similar. I mean if you try to be nice about it and then they just straight up say something like that...
Anywho that sucks. How fast were you going? The dog didn't do any damage to your bike?

People are just too emotional at times. She'll realize she overreacted towards you after a while. Dogs (and sometimes cats) can be a persons children, so you must understand how she feels. It was her responsibility to control her dog, however, so as bad as you felt (I would have felt terrible), it wasn't your fault. Just my $.02

i hear what you're saying about me being a bit harsh on it, but this lady seriously wanted me arrested for killing her dog, she was angrily protesting the police when they told me i could go.

i was in shock, not so much from killing the dog, but by the way she was acting. looking back on the situation, i'm glad she called the police because i really am not sure what this woman would have attempted because in her eyes i am clearly at fault. i love my dogs very much as well, but at the end of the day they are dogs, and if they did run into the road and get hit (which they never would because they are trained very well), i would blame myself and not someone else.

Crappy situation for everyone. However, if you can't just nod and take it from an old lady that just lost her dog (because of you, whether it was your fault or not), I would question your ability to interact with humanity in general.

I'm particularly insensitive to death compared to most people, but even I can put myself in other people's shoes. Can't you?

Again, sorry you had to go through that. Must be horrible.

Wanting you arrested is over the top, and wrong of course. Again though, I'd cut her a bunch of slack because of the shock and loss she was experiencing.

One of the things I've found it very, very hard to learn - in fact I'm still a long, long ways off mastering it - is that sometimes it's better to just say nothing. In your encounter, even when she was going over the top etc. probably just best to say 'I'm really sorry for your loss' and leave it at that, or not respond at all except to the cops' questions.

Again, if it was my dog I would not take kindly to being lectured about his need for training - then again I wouldn't have been shouting for your arrest either ...

Dude, At least you stopped. That may bring her some closure in the future.

A few years back my 14 year dog was hit in the road and left for dead. She was run over many times after that, leaving a 50 yard stripe of blood in front my house for many months, reminding us every time we pulled in the driveway. My next door neighbor ended up scraping her off the road and pulling her (and her guts) to my house in a wagon. Most horrific thing I have ever saw. If only that piece of sh!t that hit her would have owned up to what he/she did and stopped and at least knocked on our door. :frown:

This is a sad story :frown:
I think most States (if not all) have a leash law, so leagally she has no case at all... Even though this is not your fault Pepe, maybe a nice gesture would be to offer to get her another dog?.. .. In her eyes her child was just killed, so she is grieving and not very rational yet. Compassion, for her and yourself might be what is needed here. Good luck.

Buffy

I have a terrier, and they are notoriously difficult to train. I even had a dog trainer come to the house ever week for over 6 months to work with her. She did pretty well, but when that hunting instinct took over (strong in terriers), she would streak past me faster than I could blink - out the door and after whatever had her attention. It was maddening.

All that to say that even well-trained dogs are going to disobey at times, or get a one-track mind. Doesn't make it your fault. The owner's grief is also understandable, though. I'd give her one more chance to call; after that, let her know you're going to report her to the police for harassment. Hopefully she'll become more rational as reality sets back in.

Sad situation, I'd be devastated in either position, both hers or yours. Take the high road, Pepe; no need to 'take her down'. I hope it blows over soon.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Giving her a new dog is just enabling her. If you do that she can get anything from you. Secondly this lady doesn't sound like she wants an answer, she wants him to go through pain. If he bought a new dog she would probably say something like "thats not MY dog...bring my dog back!"
You just can't reason with these people.

Pepe, I think you need to focus on this being a terrible accident that brought you together with this woman for a moment in time. Let that moment be in the past and move on with your life. If she continues to contact you, then alert the police, but otherwise, take the high road and just let it go.

PepeRB29

i've already contacted my lawyer and the police about their liability in the situation due to them providing the lady with my information. i have absolutely nothing legally to worry about with this, as i did nothing wrong. the lady has called probably 5 times today as well and has threatened to poison my dogs because i "took her dog away from her with my carelessness". this is really ridiculous, and its unfortunate because it should not even be an issue except for the law enforcements unprofessional actions. my dogs are locked inside because who knows what this nut job will do. i'll post up if i hear anything else.

My first reaction when I read this was to have you go back over there with a puppy and offer it to her as a peace offering. That would be cheap with a free puppy from Craigslist, it would show her you were remorseful, and would probably resolve the issue. (As long as you did not burn down your bridges by acting like you do in here, in RL) But after the updates to the situation I am beginning to think you might be in another situation altogether. I would still try to be a man in this bad situation and offer her a new puppy to replace the old one. If she does not accept the peace offering, you will have to take action. If she continues with the calls, you will need to get a restraining order against her. You also will need to report the threats against your pets to the police, getting proper documentation to record the situation. I am pretty sure your area has leash laws, making her liable for the actions of her dog on public property........her dog did endanger you and your bike. You will need to research that. Document everything, and avoid being brash with her or police at all costs. I know it might hurt your ego to let her yell at you, and you not get a chance to argue back, but that is what a real man would do...........keep his composure and try to do the right thing. If you were insolent with her on that day, as you are in here often, (it is noticed you are getting better lately) you might have already built your house. If that is the case and you cannot resolve this situation without legal actions, make sure you have all your ducks in a row. She seems sue happy, and you might need to take actions against her. Good luck.

You didn't crack a cowling did you? LOL

Trust me, I would do even worse than she did if some one had killed my cat or my dog by accident. You have two dogs and you already know that, they are just some times too related to you where you can't easily let them go, and I guess that woman's lonely and thought of that dog as her husband (or wife if it was a female :p). Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that and I hope you feel better. I am also sorry for the dog!

One time I was driving down the highway and there was a whole family playing with the golden lab in the front yard. There house was right off if the 4 lane road. The stupid kids were playing fetch I'm guessing. One of them through a ball across the highway and I hit their dog at 60 mph. Needless to say I didn't have anytime to slow down. I felt so bad I couldn't even stop. It was so hard for me not to cry that day. I killed a little boys dog but there was nothing I could do to change it. I should also mention that I wasn't in a good part of town and I would have been the only white boy withing 10 miles.

golfergirl13, imagine yourself being the only white person in an area full of other races while you didn't just stop there by accident, but you actually killed their own DOG. What do you think will happen to you? I think you'll find people coming from every where just beating you up and getting a piece of the action. Kenneth did the right thing, and yes, I am sorry to the little boy for losing his dog but he shouldn't have thrown the ball on the ROAD.

well a personal protection order has been issued, as she is not to have any contact with me in person or through the phone. she is not to come within 150 feet of my residence, myself, or my pets. All evidence of her threats, phone calls, and other behavior has been documented, as well as a formal report against the officers who were at the scene who have admitted to mistakingly providing her with my information.

i haven't got any phone calls from her, but i have received several "hang ups" tonight which seemed peculiar to me. the police encouraged me to sweep the area where my dogs go outside for food that has been "tainted" as well as anything else that looks suspicious. this is really ridiculous, but hopefully it will come to a close. i'm going to see if these hang up calls continue, and if they do figure out a way to track them (they are blocked calls on caller id). so i'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst. probably gonna set up some surveillance cameras just to be sure (already put some powerful motion flood lights up in the back yard.

Peper, crazy people like that woman might even add poison to some food she gives your dogs or something. That happened to my Mom and her family when she was like 19 years old, they had a dog that used to bark a lot, so their neighbor (some old woman with 6 boys and 1 girl) added poison to a piece of meat she gave the dog, so he immediately died after licking it or something. But what happened was magical and holy but in the same time sad, her only daughter that she loved SO much (out of 6 boys) actually fell of the roof while she was playing with the chickens and died. See? God punishes fast, and I think Hosni Mobarak's grandson died as a reason of what the Egyptian government (on top of them Mobarak) is doing to the pigs.

Buffy
05-19-2009, 08:56 AM
Pepe, did you find out exactly what information the police provided to the woman about you? Was it simply your name and phone number, or your address as well? Is your phone number listed? I never allow my phone numbers to be associated with an address. I wouldn't be concerned about harassing phone calls, but I would be concerned about my dogs if she know where I lived...

See? God punishes fastThere is nothing magical or holy about that. It's a little bit sad and unfortunate (and so is the poisoned dog), but it's just a coincidence. No supreme being had anything to do with it. Good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people everyday. I don't believe in fate, we choose our own paths. If a God had something to do with that, I wouldn't want anything to do with him/her/it. Killing a little girl to punish a Mother is nothing but sick.

I noticed as you post, it's a little out of order to be honest. EIC doesn't require a tone such as that. iCafe, i suggest you rewind a little and turn on those puppy dog eyes and apologize.

Thanks for that but I didn't really get offended by his post. It's just funny how some one who's probably double my age is acting like a kid towards every one and likes young people to insult and make fun of him. I really feel bad for how he is.

Apple, i more than likely wouldn't have caught it, i read pepe's post about "nice editing" then i decided to highlight and then i saw what he posted. Also the mouse pointer turns into the typing "I" when you hold it over text. It didnt change back to a pointer when i moved the mouse over the white space so that also gave it away. It was a nice try tho infraction points for creativity.:2cool:

iCafe likes to attempt insults without being overly direct so the mods cant do much.
