I've always used a PC and have been trying out the Macbook. Now I'm wondering, why don't the programs screen go full screen and instead just go like 3/4 or 1/2 of the screen? whereas with PC programs they for the most part always open up full screen.

Why do macs do that?

you won't ever look back once you make the switch. i'm not sure as to what you are talking about, but i have absolutely 0 issues with my MBP :)

I've always wondered this myself. Such as, why is there no maximize button? But alas, I still don't have an answer.

Make the switch, you'll be glad you did.

Well it seems annoying but you'll find it better. The green + lets you switch between larger and small. If you want it to maximize, just drag it to the top left corner and grab the bottom right corner all the way to the right corner of the screen. It will memorize this position. You can set each program to whatever size you want.

+1. Believe me you'll get used to it, and NEVER look back. Since I have been using a Mac, I have grown to hate Windows.

i've thought about this, and my conclusion is this:

there's no maximize button, because you don't really need to maximize anything. When you maximize, all you do is cover up everything else you have open, which, in effect, makes your computer a unitasker.

In general (especially in Finder and Safari), the green "+" in OSX will expand windows to as large as they need to be with no excess. By doing this, the user is encouraged to multitask.

do you REALLY need those few extra inches of whitespace?

I have come to this conclusion because the few non-apple apps i use (VLC and Firefox) both fully expand with the green "+", so there must be some reason apple designs their software in this way.

Hippo is correct. The green expands the window to its best size where things are readable and theres no extra unused space. Thus, Safari maintains itself as a window and you can still click and use other apps behind it.

Those who use exposé make it very easy to switch between windows or programs and bring things to the front.

And if you can't get used to it (you will), you can try this:

I could definitely see how not having windows opened all the way makes it easier to multitask.
Oh and if you're on a macbook one of the best features is swiping four fingers up to move everything out of the way and see your desktop. Now when I'm on windows I'm like uh....how do I get to the desktop again? Right click status bar and show desktop...thats too much work.

Gestures are THE BEST THING. With the mighty mouse, and using expose so much when i get on a windows computer and i squeeze the sides im like "wtf its not working... oh right im not using my mac".

Also, Spaces is the best to use when you are timed multitasking. Example, burning a dvd.. and torrenting something. Move them both to one space, while surfing safari pages on how to create multiple sounds on another space with Garageband open on another space.

(it sounds crazy, but if u have a mac you'll know what i mean)

^spaces is full of victory, great for multi tasking.

i have mine setup like this

1 2
3 4
5 6

1 = internet browser (safari and firefox)
2 = itunes + transmission
3 = ichat
4 = calendar + powerpoint/access
5 = word + excel
6 = other random applications i don't normally use

have it set up that command + any arrow key changes to that space. **** works amazing :)

I just realized that using "maximize" is great for gaming on a PC and for the AMPLE games that are out for Mac (/sarcasm) you just can't do that as easily.

no, sleeping actually serves a very important function to the human body. gaming really does nothing other than waste time.

I think riding sportbikes, watching Entourage, and degrading women, is a waste of time and money.

I agree. I have 2 games for my PS3 and I've spent a total of 30 minutes playing each of them. I'd rather use it for Blu-ray's. I don't understand why people that are into games would rather play them on their PC's than a game console.

well a sportbike can get me from point a to b, i watch entourage mainly when i run on the treadmill or do pushups and sit-ups, and well degrading women.....yah i shouldn't have to explain the benefits of that :)

nice try though lol

is it just a coincidence that most online sites for games are titled something along the lines of "time wasters"

GEE THATS A MYSTERY!?!?!?!?!?!
