View Full Version : The rumor mill has been quiet for too long

Alright guys/gals well its May, 1 month left before the new iphone comes out and whats bugging me the most is that its been "quiet" so to say.
The closer to release date the more things come up but is it still to soon?

It's probably not going to be released in June, you know. If something comes out this summer, it will likely follow the same schedule as last year: revealed in June, released in July.
I think all the main rumors are already in place regarding hardware enhancements. All we need now is those case design leaks and we're set for June.

Having spent the better half of the last few weeks reporting on Pre rumors (http://www.everythingpre.com/articles/categories/rumors/), I'm kind of glad we've taken a break from rumors at EIC. I suspect things should start ramping up if June will bring a new iPhone. Plenty of iPhone HD rumors a few weeks back, but things have quieted down. Calm before the Storm (ahem, new iPhone).
It's been nutty over there...

The battery life we dont know about yet. Allegedly they have a bigger capacity battery.

I agree with London, despite all the nasty things he says about me.
You're assuming that the battery in the new iPhone will remain the same. I'm thinking that it'll be an upgraded design in order to better handle the extra demand forced upon it by (possible) HD recording, improved screen, etc.
Also, some of the chips in the new iPhone may be improved versions with lower power consumption characteristics.
Crap - I'm starting to get excited for the new iPhone! Again!

Just think back to the new MBP. There were some significant battery updates in that thing. Why wouldn't they apply that technology on a smaller scale?

There's no rumors because we've pretty much sapped the topic raisin dry.
Londonrockz568
05-04-2009, 10:10 PM
lol, there is no snapping up anything dry.
The battery has two choices.
Either apple makes the other chips/programs less demanding and more efficient thus taking less power and keeping the battery the same as it is with the 3G.
Or
They upgrade the battery performance and enhance the efficiency of the chips/programs inside the phone to be less demanding which is what i think they're doing.
Everything is exponential, and with a completely new model im pretty sure the chips are going to be more efficient and the battery will have more capacity. Lets not forget people, the iphone's battery in a standard razor would prolly keep the razor working for days.

Not going to happen any time soon. Apple is all about looks and formfactor. I dont think many people will be pleased to see the circuit boards, solder, inards of the phone. People will liken it to being "cheap".

Well, my prediction at this point:
Name: iPhone HD
HD video recording
HD video output
HD video editing
Upload to Youtube and other services
3.2 MP still camera with AF/macro (not so sure about flash)
Higher-rez screen (800x480)... same 3.5" size
Faster CPU with more system memory
Starts at 16GB
Similar form factor... perhaps thinner... back to aluminum for the casing
7.2 MBPS 3G speed (this will affect the current 3G as well)
And that's it! Certainly good enough for me!

I know I am reaching but an OLED screen would be a hell of an upgrade. Colors, contrast, thickness and power usage would all be improved with this one change.

I agree with everything on psylichon's list with one exception. I don't believe there will be an aluminum backing. I would be quite happy with that list. I think OLED technology is still a year away for the iPhone. I hope I'm wrong though.
I'm a little suprised as well that its been so quiet here lately, or the past 2 weeks solid at least. I hunt for any and all snippets of info on a daily basis to keep the nextgen thread up to date and its a bummer to go day after day after day with little to no news. Ah well, maybe things will pick back up. Seems it did come to a screeching halt all of the sudden though. Can't wait till June 8th. ;)

With all of this what do you think the expected cost will be? That's a ton of stuff to still keep the $199 (low end model) and $299 (high end) pricepoint. I'm of course assuming everyone is going to extend their ATT contract another 2 years.

05-06-2009, 03:26 PM
I've said it in another thread, but I'll repeat it here... I think the pricing structure this time around will look something like this:
8GB 3G: $99
16GB 3G: $199
16GB 3GHD: $299
32GB 3GHD: $399
Or something along those lines.

If they are going to push the HD aspect do you really think they will only start with 16GB? I think to really take advantage of it you would have to start with 32 and go up from there. Although I just need more storage for my musica and videos so I'd have to really think about upgrading (and missing out on three consecutive iDays) this time around.
psylichon
05-06-2009, 03:44 PM
Well, that's a good point. If they can do 64 GB, I think it will be available also, but they will price themselves out of the market a bit starting the new iPhone at 32GB, I think. With a faster CPU, it could do some serious compression on the fly, giving high-quality results with relatively small file sizes. It will have to shrink it down to upload to youtube, etc, after all.
Napoleon_PhoneApart
05-06-2009, 05:50 PM
Then again, with many of these parts probably being cheaper than they were a year ago, Apple may be able to maintain the same price points as last year.

Hey guys, I'm new here but I just wanted to say I've been lurking around here for a few weeks and I really appreciate the info I get from guys like Indy and psylichon! Sorry to hijack a thread but I figured this didn't need a new thread being started. :)
I'm a G1 user who cannot wait to see if a new iPhone will be available this summer. I tried tricking myself into thinking the G1 could hang with the iPhone. It cannot.

I agree, I think it will go:
8GB 3G: $99
16GB 3G: $199
32GB 3GHD: $299
64GB 3GHD: $399
My reasoning is that I think instead of 8, 16, 16, 32, they would rather count up and not repeat. For example just like the above revisions to psylichons predictions, it would go 8, 16, 32, 64. And those new sizes would obviously be to handle the large HD pictures, video, etc. while allowing for tons of music, tv shows, movies, and of course those 11 pages of apps.
Londonrockz568
05-06-2009, 07:59 PM
Here's how im thinking it would be. I've added some to psy's post.
Iphone HD 16gig/32gig.
Features:
iLife:
{iMovie HD video recording
iMovie HD basic video editing
HD video output
iPhoto management of pictures
iWeb upload to Youtube/Facebook/MobileMe and other services}
Push Email
iChat as dedicated Instant Messenger app using front camera for video chats.
OSX GUI
Adobe Flash support limited
HardWare:
3.2 MP Video chat camera
5.0 MP Still Camera with AF/macro (not so sure about flash)
OLED Screen same 3.5" size (easily and cheaply made at this size. OLED's get expensive the bigger the screen size).
Faster CPU with more system memory, More efficient, smaller "greener" chipsets since this is a major upgrade.
7.2 MBPS 3G speed (this will affect the current 3G as well)
Similar form factor however it'll be lighter, thinner (due to OLED screen) back to aluminum for the casing. (This will also fit into the design language of apples other products. Maybe a variation like dull (v1) for 16gig, and Glossy (iTouch) for 32gig.
Thats all i could think of.
I want to see some leaked pictures already sighs...

I think that would be nice and I would be comfortable with the pricepoints (even though they are a little high for the average joe). I guess the thinking would be that if you want a cheap iPhone go with the current 3G and if you want a higher end model go with the 3GHD.

Man, that phone looks amazing. The specs certainly are impressive if true.
I hope this is real because it helps me hold out for this new one easier.
I just wish that the "Nokia" stated release date of July 1st was the date as opposed to the July 17th date.
Londonrockz568
05-20-2009, 01:08 AM
lol. Nokia's still exist? Seriously
When the iPhone came out, its like all those other phones kinda disappeared. Now its the "in thing" to have a smart phone instead of a what is now called "basic" phone.
The only thing people hear about now, are Samsung, iPhone, Blackberry and a little of Motorola.
But i Digress. I was right that apple was gona use OLED screens. They are cheap when this small, and since the OLED printing process is very thin (and cheaply done at a small size alota space can be free'd up or eliminated thus making the device iTouch thin (oh joy one can hope). Im really contemplating camping outside the Miami Apple store or stalking the mall security in Aventura when the doors open for this.
