This article is making the rounds and is pretty interesting. Seems all the pieces are in place for making this possible and totally useable.

Yes but from my experience with skype, it doesn't seem like a good idea to use for all calls. I would rather pay the 65 a month and work a couple days a a week lol.
The cool thing is that it's possible. Imagine if you lived in one of those cities where it's city wide wifi. Wouldn't even have to activate the phone, just use WiFi the whole time.

I would just get an iPod Touch and a good set of buds w/mic.

What cities have wifi everywhere? It's a cool idea. My edge is too spotty though to really make this worth it.

There are a couple test cities out there (San Francisco I believe is one) Where they have wifi over the whole city. If you tie in, you have sign-up for a flat monthly fee for access. It's actually pretty cheap.

I think London does as well.

Philadelphia does, and currently it's free, but it doesn't work that great inside buildings.

I like the whole city wide wifi idea. Other countries of the world are kicking our ass as far as internet technology goes. This would get us back on the map.

Sounds like a lot to go through just to be cheap.

While that might be true, the over all benefit of paying just 23 a month instead of 73 is a savings of roughly $600 a year.

Maybe they need to spend their money on something else.

Dang that's a pretty clever idea. The dude definitely knew what to do to make it work.
I get the 3G data plan for $20 a month thanks to the inept Genius at St. John's Mall in Jacksonville.

James 22.04.2009 | 8:13 pm Also, you should have gone with T-Mobile. They have a $100, 1000 minute prepaid plan that doesn’t expire for 1 year. Then they have an unlimited data plan for $10 per month with no fees or contract or anything. It ends up being about $18 per month, and you don’t really need to conserve T Mobile minutes. You can probably get that $100 down if you have reliable WiFi and can depend more on VoIP. You’d have to check their other prepaid plans though.
Again, if anyone uses VoIP, go with Gizmo. They have an ultra cheap prepaid plan that links fully with Google Voice. They do SMS also.
Thanks for this article. I’ll be going a slightly different route, but it still helped.
Does anyone know anything about this?

I wish that could be possible, here in our country very limited places have wifi.

the only thing i might worry about with this is security. I don't think hacking a cellular network is very common, but hacking wifi transmissions IS... ESPECIALLY public wifi. I know everyday joe is probably not worried about people listening in on their dinner plans, but if this makes it to a wide scale, it's bound to happen to someone.

If I was on a single line, or my wife and kids had iphones/ipod touches...I would give this a try, but as it stands we have the family unlimited texting plan and it's cheaper than buying a plan to suit everyones texting habits.
