Hey, everyone.. Can one download music and/or videos from different iTunes sources without jeopardizing already dwnloaded stuff on iPhone?? I've been told "yes" & "no" depending on iTunes settings, but I'd prefer a definite answer b4 I inconvenience myself.

Yes, you can download to the iPhone from multiple sources, but not the other way around. Apple restricts it that way to prevent piracy.

So, lemme make sure I understand correctly, Joe...
One could actually download music, videos, etc. ONTO one's own iPhone from multiple iTunes accounts without jeopardizing the loss of current iPhone data, but cannot upload accumulated data from iPhone INTO multiple accounts?
If that's accurate, are there any conditions (settings or what-have-you) to watch out for when downloading to, again, avoid jeopardizing any loss of original iPhone data?

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with this. I'm having the same problem. I've got multiple computers but for the life of me, the only computer that I can download from to my iPhone is my home computer and I'm not really happy about that.
Any thoughts/suggestions/solutions?

God, could someone pleeez clear this up for me once'n for all?! I wanna knw if one could dwnload anythng from some other iTunes account WITHOUT losing originally downloaded music, videos, apps, etc on one's own iPhone? And if it IS do-able, would one lose newly dwnloaded data as soon as one's iPhone is sync'd up to one's personal iTunes account?

The link you've provided does not answer this question.
The question is this, can you add to your iPhone from different Itunes accounts on different computers.
From my point of view and from what I too am experiencing, I'm thinking the answer is no and I cannot understand why.

Okay, so I went to the Apple store today and had an appointment with a Genius there. I had to wait an extra 25 minutes past my scheduled appointment time because they were so slammed.
I told this Genius, who I've dealt with before and had great results, my problem. She immediately thought I was crazy that I couldn't communicate with my iPhone on my laptop since my iPhone was first matched up with my PC computer at home. I told her that I can add songs from any computer that has iTunes to my four different iPods that we own, in our family.
Sure enough, she puts in my iPhone into my Mac laptop, she sees the phone listed, and can't add any music to it, or anything. She was stumped. So, she then goes asks someone else about the problem.
They come back with the answer that when you "first" attach your iPhone to whatever computer you hook it up to, you need to tell the iTunes software that you want to "manually" manage your music. I remembered that when I first attached my iPhone to my home computer, which is a PC, iTunes automatically started syncing the iPhone without me being able to choose the manual mode. So the genius then tells me if I want to control the iPhone from more than one computer, I have to remove all the music from it and basically start over.
Well, I really didn't have that much music on this one, yet, about 180 songs, so I said, no problem.
I came home, backed up my phone numbers and contacts, etc......then I erased all the music and basically told iTunes I had a brand new iPhone and I wanted to "manually" manage the music. So with a "clean" phone, I added one song from my PC to the iPhone. I then ejected it and then attached it to my MacBook Pro.
Same story. I cannot control the iPhone, at all, from my Mac laptop, even though I wiped it clean and did everything she told me to do.
I truly think that the software on an iPhone is different than on an iPod in terms of the music control and I am either going to be stuck and have to use only my home PC to control my iPhone, as that is where my vast music collection in and just be resigned to the fact that I cannot add anything to my iPhone while I am out of town.
I don't like this news, at all.
Any thoughts, suggestions?

Yeah I was gonna say you can do it with an ipod (no need to erase anything). I have yet to see it done on the iphone. The ipod has a check box that says manually manage music where the iphone doesnt.
That doesn't mean you can't do it, just not with itunes yet.

No, when I plug in the iPhone, there is an option for manually managing the music. I have "hit it" and I still can't upload from more than my "master" computer......
That is what I'm trying to tell you.
I think it is impossible to add music from more than one source to an iPhone, but you can do it with an iPod. I don't know why the iPhone software for the itunes portion of the phone would be different, but it is.

Under the summary tab in itunes, there's a tick box for manually managing music for your iphone. But I don't think that resolves the OP's original query..
Actually I think you can manually drag and drop from any connected source but I can't try it out right now.. and I could easily be wrong!

I am having the same problem... I attached iphone to a laptop i share with my girlfriend, and now, when I attached it to my computer at work, I can't do anything without totally erasing everything I have already put on my iphone. what's the point of having the ability to attach or "authorize" 5 computers, if you can only load stuff on your ipod from just one, or the original pc you attached your iphone too!??

I was at the Apple store again, today; and asked the same question. I was told no. For some reason, the iPhone can only be synced with one Master computer, even if you go under iTunes and check the manually manage music.
This really ticks me off, as I travel with a Mac laptop, but I have to control the iPhone with my home PC.
Yuck !!

My laptop is my main iphone computer and I was searching for an answer to my problem.
My hard drive went out and had to get another, I downloaded another version of itunes ,catch is all my songs on the computer are obviously gone. And yes I do back up but it's been a while and I was slack :( . So all of or most of my songs are on my iphone and I can't reconnect to itunes without loosing them, so I can't get my songs off the iphone and i can't load anymore without loosing those. That's screwed up !
Am I understanding this right ?? Thanks

Well it should actually be possible to use more than one computer with iTunes to sync your iPhone - there is an app that can assist if you jailbreak it.
Wylie - there is a program that can help - "Tune Aid" search for a torrent.
http://www.digidna.net/news/transfer_ipod_music_to_pc_and_mac.php
I had to use it when my laptop crashed and I lost all my data - another option would be to connect your faulty drive as a slave and try some disk regenerator software.

Thanks,
Tuneaid did pull my songs off and I didn't have to jail break it first, i probably will soon just need to read more about it.
I do have one more question if anyone can help out, now that I have my songs i was going to re sync with and let it erase the songs on the phone and reload. My question is this, is itunes going to delete my stored numbers in my phone contacts also ???? if so i can't let it sync....
Thanks

That is correct and I think this stinks to high heaven.
I can upload songs to my various iPods from my four different computers but you can't do it on an iPhone and I think that is the pits!
Apple needs to change that and I don't know why they have made the iPhone this way.

you can do it. Your iTunes account has to be authorized on both computers. Sync it to your desktop. Copy your iTunes music library from your desktop to your laptop. On laptop goto itunes, file, add folder to library so that itunes will recognize the music you added. That will have to be done for the photos, videos, and any other media in itunes. Once that is done hook your phone to your laptop, open itunes. Select the iphone in itunes. Unselect auto sync. You should now be able to sync.
The wifi went out on my phone while my notebook was in the shop (fan went out). Apple gave me a new phone (3G as I had before). So had to sync with my desktop that I rarely use now. Got most of my contacts back. Got my laptop back a week later and synced my phone with it and had no problems. That was a couple of days after the 3.0 update. I hope this helps, if not send me a message and maybe I can walk you through it.
