The only way would be to jailbreak the phone at this time. When 3.0 is release, it will be available to all.

The 3.0 update that will come out sometime this summer will include MMS. However, as far as I know, this function will only work on 3G, so it will not work on V1 phones.

She can add a 3rd party MMS program that is unapproved by Apple, called SwirlyMMS if she jailbreaks her V1, but it doesn't work for everyone and she will likely have to call AT&T so they can adjust something on her account to get it working.

Maybe she could get the new iPhone this summer?

I was just getting ready to edit my post. Thanks for the update. I had forgotten the the V1 phone will not have MMS because of hardware issues.

MMS will NOT work on the original iPhone with 3.0 software. It will only work on the 3G or newer (if something is released this summer).

It doesn't make sense because it's BS. If an unofficial 3rd party app can do it you're telling me Apple can't? Obviously it's possible to do it on the 2G. Hardware issue my a$$. And why would Apple leave out crucial hardware that doesn't allow it to perform a function that the simplest, cheapest, generic phones from 5 years ago can do? Come on now.

You all can debate the technical reasons it CAN or CANNOT be done. But it's not being supported by Apple & AT&T, period.

It will not work on the V1 because the V1 does not have a 3G chip.Yes, it most likely would have been possible to make it work with Edge, but how long should Apple be expected to continue to support obsolete devices? The longer they do, the less new phones they will sell. It doesn't make sense from the business perspective. These aren't cars we're talking about, why would you even want the same cell phone for 3+ years? Things move fast in the cell phone world. All companies will stop supporting old devices sooner or later. 3G wasn't up and running when the V1 was released. If everything worked on the V1, there wouldn't be much reason to upgrade.

even though i have a 3g anyways, this kinda pisses me off that they would do that. if it has anything to do with a 3g chip, does that mean you wont be able to send mms on a 3g while on edge?

i wonder if someone will come up with a jailbreak that will let you have mms on the v1? dont you think that would be possible?

AFAIK, it will not work on a 3G phone while that phone is running on Edge.

Feel free to complain to Apple (on the Apple Suggestion site) that MMS doesn't work on Edge (on a V1 or a V2 or a V3). Maybe in 2 years it will !

Yep, SwirrlyMMS will still be there, although it doesn't work for everyone.

First part...I turn 3G off and mms in 3.0 works fine for me. I do not believe they would be able to get away with 3G service only getting mms, to many areas do not have 3G service.

Second part, iRealSMS developer has already stated they were going to make iRealSMS compatable with 3.0 and would include the MMS hook, hopefully they will also make it compatable with the original iPhone. If not, people may find swirlymms starts working effortlessly once at&t flips the iPhone switch for mms.

According to shutter, MMS works fine on Edge. It makes absolutely no sense to limit even their latest product's capabilities (the 3G) to markets that support the latest network. There is no way MMS depends on there being 3G capability; if this turns out to be true then Apple has made one of the stupidest marketing decisions ever.

So, the two changes to hardware were 3G and GPS; if these two have no effect on MMS availability, then what else could possibly be limiting its usage to the 3G only?

Anyone else think its weird how there is an option to turn MMS on and off in the 3.0 beta? Its been in beta 1 and 2...

I assume that on the 3G you receive even an edge signal through the 3G chip, perhaps the software limitation is that it has to pass through said chip. I do not know the technical specs for these things, so maybe I'm wrong. I can say though, that so far mms is working fine on my iPhone 3G with no 3G signal and/or with 3G turned off.

I hadn't thought about it, but yes it is odd. Since MMS counts towards a message count and (if no message plan) data. There really is no reason to be able to turn it off or on, since we are required to have a data plan and we cannot turn sms on and off.

This may be because ATT hasn't set up the MMS for iPhones yet. Possibly, when 3.0 official comes out and ATT is ready for MMS on iPhone, it will only work on 3G service. ??????

And to add to that this toggle exists on the v1 even though they claim it wont be available for the v1. (I thought this was implied since I posted in this thread)
