Hi,
When upgrading from the V1 Iphone to the 3g, i know people were offered a free upgrade early because it was unsubsidized. What do people think about a free early upgrade to the next version Iphone?
If we sign up to a new 18 month contract do you think we will be offered some kind of trade in sceme? Get it completly free? Ideas?

I would think so. Considering you're paying for the phone, O2 will be dying to tie you in for another 18 months. :D

You get a thnkx for being a Man United fan. Chelsea blows, and Arsenal can just drop off the planet.
lol... O2 is more than likely going to do a subs price again to get more people with them. Maybe with the new iphone coming they will do something like a price cut on the existing 3G and offer some amount of price off the new iPhone for upgrading and extending a contract. The only way people are going to get the new iphone for free is if they are a brand new termed contract for O2.

From what I've been told, O2 won't do a free upgrade, as they did with iPhone v1, to the new iPhone as the iPhone 3g was free on certain contracts ranging upto £159. They may do a subsidised upgrade dependent on the length of time you've been in your existing contract. Alternatively it may be worth getting the free iPhone 3.0 upgrade until being able to have an early upgrade.

Yea, i have 3.0 but certain features being discussed - mainly video - seem only to be available with new hardware. This would seriously p**s me off!!

To my knowing, O2 isnt one to update certain things like AT&T would do. We'd prolly see MMS and crap after a few months.

The MMS side of things is a totally different thing, AT&T are a totally seperate network, they probably don't even communicate with each other.
If the 'new' iphone comes with MMS as we know 3.0 will, then i'm sure that o2 would have taken into account through apple's tech guys that this will have to be a must for the launch of the FW/iphone etc..
P.S Londonrockz I'm also a united fan!!!!!!!!! i hate everton!

to be perfectly honest i think this will be generic across most if not all carriers. I dont see why they wouldnt support it when people like myself have been waiting for fully working apps like this to come. There will always be the argument about emailing pictures for free but MMS is for those that dont support the email. Only time will tell

O2 supports MMS now on 3.0 beta 2/3. I have it running fully to send and recieve. All i did was update my IPCC file and call o2, explain im a beta tester and they put mms on my account. It cost 3 x std messages from my allowance to send. free to recieve.

i think this topic has gone off course...
Croucher i know MMS works, it was one of the people above that discussed something else then this went off on weird tangent some where lol.
I was merely suggesting that there would be no reason why o2 wouldnt support MMS when 3.0 is officially released along with the new iphone (if released) when it works now!
Also... does that whole 'i'm a beta tester for apple' work??? i tried that on with o2 a while back, they told me to ram it!

yup, definatly works, they added mms straight away for me!

I'm asking myself a similar question Croucher. I currently own the iPhone V1 and my 18 month contract runs out next month. I pressume the 3rd iPhone will be released in July so my question would be; "Will the 3rd iPhone be a free upgrade?". I will happily sign another 18 month contract and I finished my previous 18 month contract without switching during it like some people did to get the 3G. I think, though, that O2 will charge about £100 plus the £30-£45 a month for the new iPhone but I'm hoping there isn't an initial fee as surely they will want to keep us onboard as customers!

hi Clover,
your in a difficult situation... it's a bit of a shame considering your contract is nearly up as apple are no doubt going to release a new iphone. Like last time, i had v1 iphone and i was halfway through my 18month contract when the new one came out. As you know o2 allowed existing iphone customers on a £45 a month contract would get a free upgrade and there 18month contract would restart.
This time, to keep o2's custom, i think they will do the same.
So you might as well stay on an iphone contract so when the new one comes out upgrade to that (i dont know if you could upgrade to another 3g or not... i can't see why they wouldn't let you get another one, just think. you could wam it on ebay or something)

When the contract officially ends, can I carry on with the pay monthly? Like, my contract runs out in May, but for June, if I don't start a new contract with anything, can I carry on paying £35 a month for my minutes and texts? If that's the case, I'll do that for another 2-3 months and then upgrade to the 3rd iPhone because I really don't want the 3G.

Like i said before.. it was only the people on a £45 a month contract who could upgrade with zero charge. The only thing you had to pay for was £50-60 to get the 16gb version.
I think they'll do something similar this time as well. You will probably need to upgrade to a £45 a month to get the new phone a few months into your contract.. i can't be sure to be perfectly honest as there is nothing set in stone to say this will happen.
I don't see why they wouldn't let you upgrade your contract (as it's ending). When you upgrade you might get another iphone 3g.. which means you could either sell it on ebay or something and keep your old one, and when the new phone comes out, upgrade straight to that reset your contract start date for another 18months

I don't mind paying 50 odd quid for the 3rd iPhone if I can stay on the £35 a month contract. I'll see what they offer me.

i dont think it was as simple as paying £50 for the new phone.
I had the choice between the 8gb version, which was free and the 16gb version which cost an extra £50-60 i can't remember which but it was one or the other!
I really think o2 will do the same, there the dominant carrier in the UK there going to keep hold of there iphone rights as long as possible. They like to be the only one with the iphone + just think how many people changed contracts just to get one!!

ALOT of people jumped ship from vodafone and other carriers to get the iphone on o2.

Well they've lost me, I've already spent over £2200 on the contract.
How have you spend £2200 on a 3g contract? That would mean an average monthly spend of around £180?
I signed up for the 3g knowing it was an 18 month contract, and knowing that the phone was subsidized. I also knew, as I researched (and not very hard), Apple released the Iphone 3g roughly 1 year after the V1, so I was sure that a new phone of some sort would be introduced in 12 months time when i signed up.
How can you be angry at a company that give you a £400 phone for free if you sign up to a 18 month contract and expect you to honer it? If you want to upgrade early, do as I did, drop my contract to the lowest band and then sell your 3g which should cover the cost.
Of course I would have preffered o2 to say "heres the new 3gs for free. The 3g we gave you for free 12 months ago? Sure, Keep it." Be realistic, this will never happen. The reason people could upgrade from the V1 to 3G early was because the 3g was subsidized.
You cant sign any sort of finance contract that ties you in for 2 years and expect the company to let you scrap that, keep the product and sign a new contract to get a new product... thats ridiculas.

Nope, that's an original iPhone Contract, so an average of £150 pm.
My userbit even says that I own an original iPhone, so here are the facts you need:
Original iPhone was unsubsidised, please re-evaluate your argument.
Second, priority list, I am meant to be on at least gold, but I am still on Silver, I have not had a review since I bought the iPhone back in April.

Im sorry but that doesnt make sense. You would have only spent £150 per month if you bought you V1 2 months before the 3g was released. If this is the case then you really should do you research.
I said that the 3g was subsidised, not the original.
Thirdly, if you have a V1 iPhone, as soon as the 3g was released o2 announced that v1 owners could upgrade early as they paid for the phone, so why you have kept your v1 all this time whilst moaning about not being able to get a 3gs without paying to upgrade early is beyond me.
If you have a v1 you can upgrade early - you have been able to do this since last July.
Also, your priority list issue is a personal one you have with o2. I have been reviewed each year. Finally, if you are paying £150 on an Iphone contract your being ripped off. You get unlimited internet and wifi, and you call plan should cost a max of £75 per month. This includes 3000 minutes and 500 texts, and you can add an unlimited text bolt on for less than £75 per month... so I have no idea how you could spend £150 per month
- argument re-evaluated ;)

I pointed out that I wasn't using the 3G, but the original device. The upgrade path to 3G was for free from Jue through to August of that year.
The shops where I live were constantly out of stock, and the closest shop which had stock was an hour away from me.
Information then claimed that 3G was subsidised and at that point, I re-evaluated my need for the 3G, and said that it wasn't worth the upgrade.
I've been going through heavy usage of the telephone, not the number of minutes I use, but the amount of calls and texts I use per month, although I never hit the 500 text message limit mark.
I am also startled to see that some 3G owners are paying less than I am, one even down to £20 (to get out of their contract) whilst being on the silver priority list to upgrade to the 3G S.

V1 can upgrade early. The reason you cant upgrade to the 3gs is that stock is reserved for new customers.
You should never be paying £150 on an iphone contract, as i pointed out above, for £100 you can have unlimited wifi and internet, 3000 minutes and unlimited texts... unless your callling premium rate numbers.
ct2k7
07-09-2009, 08:41 AM
Less than half are premium rate numbers, but, most of the people I call to end up being on other networks or just as bad, in a different country.
Currently, V1 customers can only upgrade according to what their priority list level entertains them, no subsidy reasons apply.

o2's minutes are cross network, so you wont be charged for them. You will be charged for overseas and primium rate calls...as you would with most contracts. Without meaning to sound harsh, its your own fault your spending £150 per month.
There is noway I would call overseas numbers / premium numbers from my mobile because of the hefty charges.

I am not saying that it is anyone else's fault that I pay an average of £150pm.
Unfortunately, I've had periods where my landline goes all crappy due to an explosion which happened at the local telephone exchange a while back, and am therefore forced to use the mobile.
Some of my clients are overseas, and I therefore have to use it.

Croucher, have you tried using the Skype credits to pull this off?
Its really cheap, and it makes calling other countries hassle free since o2 wont charge you hefty fees.
I havent tried it yet, but i've heard that if you pull the sim, connect to wifi and make a skype call it'll work.

Tell me about holidays. Internet bolt on was only functional about 3 days into my holiday, got a message it was active the day before I left :/ I really have had a bad experience with O2 :(
Shame you've had a bad experience with o2 - i've found them to be on the best network I've ever used out of 3 (****), Orange (****ter), Vodafone (toss!).
Customer service is great with o2. I'm on gold but it's my Uncle's contract he had with Cellnet WAY back in 1992...
