Not sure if this would even be possible. A programable app for garage doors, gates, etc.

There are apps that let you control your home but you have to have that system already set up and be in range of your home's network via wifi. The iphone is pretty amazing but its not a unicorn.

Im not knocking you Adam, it was a good idea, I'd even probably buy one, it's just that when I read what was said about the unicorn, I laughed out loud!

I use mine for opening my garage door. I use either of 2 methods:

X10 commander for when I'm at home.
IOBridge for checking it's closed when I'm away and closing it if I left it open.

Not a chance this could ever happen or has transmitting like that ever been looked into? Seems like it would be easy to implement since a cell phone is a radio transeiver anyhow.

actually, it would be possible, especially with all of the new api's. you could have it go wifi, or bluetooth, if you are in range, or as rip said, when you are away through a network connection. the latter would take a little more work, because you could in theory have your whole house wired up through a network connection and control it from anywhere. the former, though easier, would still take some work, including a modified switch on the front of your garage set up. bluetooth, being the easiest, would be fairly simple, and controling your garage door would be one of many various tasks that you could do with a specific app. you could lock / unlock your own front door as well with a little bit of tinkering.

In addition to the api's they are adding support for accessories(probably an api) to be added on to the device, so you could (if some company created one) connect the device to your phone or even integrate it into a case that would open your door when an app or button was pressed. Apple's accessory support adds countless things you could add to the iphone to do almost anything.
