3.2-megapixels would be sweet! What's the 5-megapixel sensor for? Please tell me that they're not releasing 2 iPhone models at separate times this year - I'll have to buy both!

I betting that they'll release two models at the same time. Hopefully one has a 5 megapixel camera. I'll happily settle for a 3.2 if not though.

I think releasing a separate model later on in the year would be the stupidest thing Apple could do. They know they have tons of people who will buy the new phone as soon as it comes out, but if so many people buy the first model before the second model is even announced, plenty of people will be mad (assuming the second model is better)

I'm not really buying the "better model later" theory. If they do release two models, I think it would be at the same time.

I agree with Psylichon. They will be released at the same time. I think they will have a smaller type iphone that can be Free when you sign a new contract or the smaller iphone will be for countries where networks are limited.

If this 3.2/5 dual release happens, I would at this point guess that the 3G will be revamped with the 3.2 and the new iPhone gets the 5 MP sensor. Nothing "smaller" (physically or features) than the current 3G would be introduced, I wouldn't think.

I'm hoping their developing the 5mp version for a video calling feature, I think eventually it will be standard on cell phones.

I think 3.2 will do just fine - just spend the money on better optics and imageprocessingcapability. I had a sonyericsson k800i with 3.2 mpx which took amazing pictures. Replaced it with a nokia n95 8gb with 5 mpx which sucked in comparison. And now Im really back to basics with my iPhone :P

Honestly 2MP is large enough, I just want a camera that is better quality (ie less blur, works in low light, macro feature for close shots, etc). I would like to never have to use a stand alone camera again, just my phone.

Anyone consider 3.2 MP on the front, 5 MP on the back?

That's exactly what I was thinking. But it doesn't seem sensible to me.. Who really knows tho.

No but seriously I doubt a video camera would be 3.2MP

Yeah me too. If anything, I would guess they could use the current 2 MP sensor for low-rez low-framerate VC.

they may not both go into iphones, one could be in the new iphone the other could be announced for something completely different

oh i like where your going with this lol if they have a new model or design for the iphone why not update the ipod touch as well.

if they announced 5.0 in iphone and 3.2 in ipod touch later in the year that wouldn't piss any of us off lol

They definitely have to upgrade the camera, it's just a matter of how much.

I think they will release 2 Iphones together, and i hope it goes something like this...

The "new" Iphone will look similar to the 3g, with a 2mp camera on the front, and the 3.2 on the back for video recording. An Iphone "prop" will also be released, possibly (hopefully) it will look like the alum mock up we saw earlier this year. This will have the same 2mp camera on the front and the 5mp camera on the back.

I hope thats how it will work, but i doubt it. I think the new 5mp camera will be for another device, maybe in a new mac? What camera is in them at the mo?

its a nice idea and id love to see it happen, but knowing apple it probably wont play out that way

Honestly I hope they keep it at 2, or at least don't go higher than 3.2. More megapixels on the same (tiny) image sensor of the iPhone means more noise, i.e. worse image quality. I think the current camera works great overall.

I hope they add auto focus, adjustable white balance, Macro, etc. Basically, all the camera features of current camera phones nowadays. Apple needs to take notes from Nokia, LG, SonyEricson, Samsung, etc.

I'm pretty sure video capabilities are definitely in the new OS so the new hardware will definitely have a newer camera chip anyway.

Thats a given since the old OS supports it.

Possible but not likely. I think there will either be two iphone models or they are going to start putting in the 3.2 mpix into all their macbook and imac linup and the 5 mpix into the iphone.

Forget megapixels, I just hope the camera can take a *decent* picture. The current one is completely useless.

If you can't get one good shot out of the current camera, you're doing something wrong. It's certainly not as bad as people make it out to be. I've seen really amazing iPhone pics.

I agree. I would say 90% of my pictures turn out pretty darn good. Everyone I show the pictures to can't believe it was taken with the iphone camera. No other phone has yet to take a better picture than mine, even 2 megapixels and above. Apple has done an amazing job with the camera they currently use and I couldn't even imagine if they offered auto focus or a flash. I can't wait to see what they can do with a 3.2 or better camera.

I think the majority of people just can't deal with the shutter time on the iPhone (it is agonizingly slow)... If you learn to keep your hand perfectly still even a second after taking the photo, however, you can get some amazing shots.

I agree, I think Apple will make 3.2MP with AF look simply amazing.

I haven't had any shutter lag on 3.0 so far, it's not perfect yet but it's getting there. That's how I usually get the pictures to come out so good is that I'll hold my hand still until I see the finished picture.

Let's just hope that 3.2 is in the mix of new features for the 3rd gen iphone.

I'm in the "iPhone photos suck" camp. Being a professional photographer, keeping my hands steady isn't a problem, so motion blur is a non-issue. For me, the problem with the iPhone photos is that the optics simply are not very good. The actual picture quality is quite bad... if anyone can show me an exception to this, I will rescind my statement, but as it stands, there's no photo that I've ever seen from an iPhone that I would classify as "good". "Adequate", maybe. Perhaps even "not bad... considering"... but never "good".

I suppose Jackie's photos are "adequate" then.

None, actually. My point was that I would never view any photo from the iPhone to be good enough to hang on a wall or be viewed as art. It has its purposes, as a rudimentary tool: snap a quick pic of a street corner sign to note where you parked, maybe. Or of someone's license plate in case of a fender-bender. Or something like that... just a tool. Not an instrument with which to create art.

Of course that's just my opinion, and I realize many disagree. I happen to like my photos to be better quality than the iPhone is capable of.

Oh, and I don't know who Jackie is. Show me his/her photos; maybe I'm wrong.

I would say to anyone who is really into professional photography that there is no substitute for expensive optics and camera equipment.

I was at the verizon store today and I saw the OMNIA and it had a 5.0 mp camera.

I really liked the fact that there was a button on the top/side that brought you right to the camera app.

I would like to see this done by apple to have us truely replace our digital cameras and carry only this one device

psylichon

A hardware shutter button would rule. Really a no-brainer.

5MP would be great if the optics are REALLY good, but based on the size the the priority, 3.2MP is probably enough.

Anyone who cares to argue that is arguing for the sake of arguing. Jackie has proven the iPhone can take some sweet pics!
