That's too much of a hassle as I don't have a MobileMe or those other syncing apps. I'm not convinced that the loss of YouTube is worth starting from scratch. I'll wait until they patch that one.

Yahoo works great. If you use yahoo messenger though....allllll of those contacts are in that window when you sign on. I back up contacts through yahoo but I rarely use the messenger. Might wanna just keep that in mind..for those of you that need ...privacy :)

Seriously! I don't understand why they would wait to enable such an anticipated and therefore important feature until the public release. They're just asking for trouble. Just let us test it already! However, it might just be that AT&T was peeved and considered the activation of MMS a breach of contract on Apple's part. I hope they don't increase the cost of the data package when it comes out. :gasp:

I believe the people who got it to work were lucky by getting an AT&T rep to provision MMS on their accounts before they decided to do the massive ban on it from here forward. Lucky blokes! :tounge:

As far as I know, yeah. I believe someone else mentioned having the jailbroken app SwirlyMMS prior to the 3.0 update and after they updated, MMS worked. It might have something to do with the settings SwirlyMMS configured, though.

Actually it had nothing to do with the settings, since I set up as a new phone, nothing from swirly was left over. My point was that MMS was already enabled on my acct. With beta 1 I had to use the hacked ipcc file to get mms working. with beta 2, setting up as a new phone, it just worked (maybe the ipcc file is not altered when you update?).
To get AT&T to provision MMS your going to have to be tricky, or have a good friend that works for them, or take the people out of the equation and trick the system. Methods of how have been posted several times since beta 1 came out.

And someone there told her she couldn't do it. And she reveresed it. I'm going to try again later. But my guess is if u are bold to the point. They may allow it!

Pop your sim card in another mms phone and try to send one. If it doesn't send then its your acc. Keep the sim in there and call AT&T. I did try the ipcc and it didn't work so I went back to the original. So try that and let us know.

Everyone here listen up. Don't tell them that, they know about iPhone. Here's how you can easily call and get the planned changed.
When you call let them know you will be using a blackberry for a while and switching back and forth between your iphone and your work blackberry for business trip. Tell them someone told you to get a regular TXT package, and MMS so you can have WORKING text messages on your trip that don't cost you $600 or your boss will be pissed.
Or just say you are going to try out a friends blackberry for the weekend to see if you like it better.
Anything along those lines. They can't not change your plan, the contract states you can change the plan to anything you like upgrade or downgrade, and it states you may use different phones.
I just spoke with AT&T and told her to check my provisions and change the mms messaging and change to on so that I can test mms features on 3.0 and she did and then she said okay enjoy ur mms messaging. You should try taewing's suggestion first, if you can send and receive MMS in an MMS supported phone, and after putting the sim back in the iPhone you cannot....you can try updating to this ipcc. It will add a menu to your network settings tab to add in the APN, Username and Password for the network.
APN should be wap.cingular rname and password blank, these settings work for me.

you won't see those options unless you update your carrier settings with the ipcc file I posted. Until I used it, I didn't have them either, but mms still worked so you may not need to use it.

I have read that putting the phone in airplane mode then switching it back can get it working again, maybe it makes the phone re-register with the network, don't know why it would work. You might also check your wifi, some have said mms won't work with wifi turned one, my experience has been that is doesn't matter.

If mms ever stops working for me putting the phone into airplane mode always seems to correct it. Maybe when you log back in (reconnect) to the system it puts you on the mms provisioned server again since they may have switched you to back the iphone servers.

Mine works!!!! I had tried the cracked carrier update on beta 1 and got nothing. When I updated to beta 2 I assume the cracked carrier update was removed (since I updated as a new phone). I then went to my friend at an AT&T dealer at the local mall. He took my "iPhone Messaging Plan" off and put it on a standerd messaging plan. Bada bing bada boom, I can now send and recieve MMS!!!
Again I don't know if I still have the patched carrier update or not, does anybody know how to tell? Someone I think said something about the carrier being AT&T 3.5 or AT&T 5.something... Mine say AT&T 3.5 and mine works.
Good luck all. If any of you are in the York, PA area lmk I can tell you who to see to fix yours.

No because your upgrade eligibility has nothing to do with the periphery plans you have. It will be based on the date of activation.

But last time didnt they give a slight pardon to those who had purchased the previous iphone???? I dont think changing your messaging plan would constitute u not being eligible for an upgrade when iphone 3.0 comes out. i think mot of us(i know i did) still kept the iphone data plan. it actually didnt even offer me the option to change my data plan even tho the OLAM showed i was using a Tilt. But yea popping your sim out and going to medianet on a capable phone seems to do the trick everytime if u had mms working before. it mut trick the system again until they do their sweep
shutter13
04-04-2009, 12:49 PM
That was my point, if they allow you to upgrade early for the new iPhone...the requirements will be you would have to have had an iPhone 3G activated on the network by a certain date, most likely a a fair bit before the new iPhone was announced/released.

One thing is that (quote from an AT&T Retail Rep) "iPhone 3G users who have bought the iPhone 3G at the subsidized price, will NOT be able to upgrade earlier than the 2 year contract date (or 21 months)" he also said that, "dont bank on there being a new iPhone because we knew 4-6 months ahead of time about the iPhone 3G, and weve heard nothing about a new iPhone"

2 reasons why I do not think they will allow the same type of early upgrade there was from the original iPhone.
The original iPhone was not subsidized, the 3g was. There is no reason for AT&T to allow you a second subsidized phone prior to your upgrade time.
The rumored "trade in" program AT&T might be launching in June. Basically they will give you 50-200 bucks ffor your current iPhone 3g towards the unsubsidized price of the new iPhone.
However, I do think they will do the exception upgrade like they do with the 3G, basically add 200 bucks to the subsidized price. Of course there will be restrictions their too; Account in good standing, can't have had an upgrade in the previous 6 months, probably others.
koolhand79

your first reason doesn't make sense to me. I had bought a subsidized blackjack a month before i bought my unsubsidized iphone V1, so i was in a 2 year commitment, then the iphone 3G came out 6 months later, i was able to upgrade to the 3G for the subsidized 199 price. So i bout two subsidized phones in 7 months. AT&T's reasons for allowing iphone users to upgrade early can't be only based on the V1 being unsubsidized

Sometimes they are never told anything, for example MMS, the only reason AT&T now knows about it was because of all the 3.0 users calling in to get it activated. I wonder if apple would have ever told them if it wasn't for us giving AT&T a heads up.

Mine started with v3.0 b3 update. I am on unlimited Family text and on b2 I did install the updated carrier file. It did not work prior to b3. Can send and receive.
Just in case someone testing for MMS has overlooked it, there is a toggle to turn it on in Settings|Messages. It definitely won't work if it is turned off.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to get an unsuspecting AT&T rep to provision MMS for me and they wanted to send me to the Technical Support dept after her test photo message didn't work to which I replied, "That's okay, I'll call them later". My thoughts were they would know better and possibly reverse my MMS provisioning. I've restarted several times and I still get the "!" next to every message I try to send out. I even updated the AT&T carrier settings to 5.0 to no avail. :frown:
Same as above airplane mode got me working, I think it re registers to the mms provisioned network. And after airplane mode don't try to resend with the "!" just send a new one. Oh and reset network settings can always help.

Tried turning the airport mode off and on to no avail. Still nothing. If I restore through iTunes do I need internet access? I'm at work and using my phone to tether, which I could only get to work once I updated the Carrier file to 5.0.

Has anyone noticed on iPhone 3.0 Beta when sending a text to multiple recipients that the texts get sent out as MMS messages? People that cant receive MMS messages wont receive the text. People that do receive MMS messages on other phones receive the message as MMS.

As long as you have the ipsw on the computer already I don't think you need to have internet, but if I'm wrong the only thing that would happen is that it might not get activated(even though this was supposed to be a temporary fix for people who didn't register through a developer).
Make sure you try a network settings restore, while on the phone with at&t they reset on their end then had me reset network settings on my phone under settings> general> reset> reset network settings. You could at least try the one on your end. It will restart the phone so don't worry when that happens.

Sending MMS works! I have yet to see if I can receive MMS. Make sure you open a NEW contact to send an MMS. I noticed when I tried to send it on a preexisting SMS conversation, it wouldn't work. But when I sent it on a new one, the top read "New MMS" and it went through! I also reset my Network Settings as iphun suggested previously. :2cool:

To get the tethering option, if you don't have it in this beta, you need the carrier update. The file is usually called ATT_US.ipcc and there were many on the mms forums, but I don't think this mms thread.

My MMS is working now - sending and receiving - and I'll tell you what I did in the exact order I did it.
First of all, I did NOT use the AT&T updated IPCC file! You don't need it! My carrier settings are still on 3.5 and MMS works, sending and receiving.
1. Get your account provisioned for MMS by an AT&T rep by dialing 611 from your iPhone. I merely stated that I am a beta tester under a developer for the iPhone 3.0 beta, but they didn't seem to care. They were more than happy to assist me with this and the next step.
2. Also get the AT&T rep on the phone to change your iPhone text messaging unlimited plan to a regular unlimited messaging plan.
3. Put your iPhone SIM card into an MMS capable phone like a Blackjack (preferably that was used or is used on AT&T), which is what I used, and make a few calls and "attempt" to send a few MMS pictures. I say "attempt" only because I tried several times to send MMS while it was in the Blackjack but they failed every time.
4. Put the SIM card back into your iPhone, do a hard reboot by holding the power and home buttons until you see the Apple logo and wait about 24 hours. MMS on my iPhone did not work right away as it was failing left and right. Just this morning I tried and it worked like a charm!
What I did NOT have to do was register with MediaNet, change my online account to some other phone besides the iPhone, nor did I have to use the IPCC file. I believe to get MMS working, you need only do what is listed here. The last obstacle is to get that SIM card to believe it's not in an iPhone anymore to remove the MMS block on it.

Like I mentioned before I can say for sure my mms works on both 3.5 and 5.0 so 5.0 isn't needed at all. It all depends on what at&t combination of settings you have and if they were done correct through at&t. I wonder if the day it comes out if the mms will even work and will everyone crash or make their servers slow to a crawl by bombarding the network with mms messages.
Did you have at&t before your iphone? If you did was your previous at&t phone capable of mms?

Now you are only one person, but I wonder if people with new accounts and their first phone was an iphone, their account cannot be tricked into letting mms work. But the people who had an at&t phone before the iphone have a history of other capable phones so it's easier to trick their "door" system. Just a thought, but I would need more people to prove this.

Yeah I know what you mean about where it shows the phone you are using :laugh2:. I was just saying all I changed was the messaging plan. A word of caution to those who are able to get MMS working without changing your iPhone unlimited text messaging plan to a non-iPhone unlimited messaging plan on AT&T: YOU WILL BE CHARGED $0.30 to send each picture!
I just reviewed my bill prior to changing my account to a non-iPhone unlimited messaging plan and the time I was able to get MMS working for a short period, I was charged for sending them. Luckily it was only 2 but I felt that I should warn everyone and urge them to get on the regular non-Phone unlimited messaging plan if they don't want to be charged for each MMS message!

What's the damage to your bill? I know this can make you mad but they aren't doing anything wrong, we are, and the iphone plans don't allow for mms.:frown: They probably have no way of blocking it now cause I bet some of their "doors" system is being shut down and figured they would make some extra money on people using it too early. They can't do this to you if you have the regular messages plan or family plan(what I have always used) because they include mms, so if they charged you for it you could fight back or even sue them. Since I have the unlimited family messages plan I am ready for them to charge me so I can flip out on them.

I just try this today I call AT&T and told them i have the 3.0 BETA and they hook me up with mms no hack nothing wack its all works good now the costumer service guy told me that apple never told AT&T about the BETA supporting mms so after so many calls from BETA testers asking to add mms they finely did it like i say this might been out for a while now but i just found this out my self today
NOTE: After he turn on mms on the AT&T side i had to Reset All Settings before i could get it to work im using 3.0 BETA 4

I take offense to being called a liar, when the reason for these forums is to help people with their iphones. Both reps told me that there were third party apps that offer mms services, but at this time neither Apple or At&t did. I was also unaware of the 3.0 beta being used by others.

No one called you a liar, Hondamaker was referring to the AT&T rep you spoke to, that person was lying, mistaken or AT&T as a group was blundering the issue. There are no 3rd party apps that offer true mms functionality save swirlyMMS and that is only for jailbroken phones.

you may have to talk to technical support first when i called i ask for technical support as soon as the rep got on the phone but he shored me that he could help me so i went on with it he kept asking me if i was sure that it was the 3.0 beta because if its not mms (javascript:void(0);) will not work i replayed yes its 3.0 BETA 4 to be exact so we went on with testing it after he turned it on at first it was not working so i went on to tell him that i installed a custom file a ippc (javascript:void(0);) file he ask me what was that i told him i was trying to mod my iPhone to see if i could get mms (javascript:void(0);) working so then he had me reset all settings to delete that file i installed so i did that and after about 10 min it started working i can now send pics ,contact info, Audio files via memo app (javascript:void(0);) and share Location using MMS (javascript:void(0);) Works like a charm now it finally feels like a reale update it no longer feels like a BETA anymore i am so happy now you might have to get the right rep on the phone because the rep i was talking to seem to know all about 3.0 BETA and knew just how to get MMS (javascript:void(0);) working im (javascript:void(0);) going to call AT&T (javascript:void(0);) tomorrow and ask if they have a record of the session the rep and i had on getting mms (javascript:void(0);) on and ask the the record number is if they have it and ask if i can get it if i do i will share it on here with you guys so you can get this working good luck guys!!! lET ME KNOW IF ANY OF YOU GUYS GET IT WORKING........

If you remove the updated carrier file and replace it with the original, won't the MMS option get removed? (assuming you are using beta 5)

With beta 5 yes you need the have the 5.0 ipcc before you update itunes and update to beta 5. In beta 5 using the newest itunes the original ipcc will have the Cellular data network options added by apple but for now they hide the camera icon in messages and the option under settings for mms.

I have a feeling we are going to see the final release during or shortly after WWDC, so we don't have much more time to wait until it is official and we can use mms with no hacks.

So from what I understand... the current modified 5.0 IPCC might be holding some back from getting working MMS? My account has been provisioned for a while now and I've had no luck at all. If apple adds settings to the original IPCC when using the new itunes, (while hiding the mms options) can't we just:
SSH into the phone and grab the IPCC file
Edit it so as to enable the mms switch under message settings
downgrade itunes
option+click install the modified IPCC
What's also kinda weird is that whenever I leave the MMSC/PROXY settings blank... all signs of mms vanish. Aren't the MMS settings there in the original 3.5 file which doesn't have any MMSC/PROXY entries present in the IPCC?
Any thoughts?

You could try that but I really don't think it will work. They have been using 3.5 ipcc file for all beta releases, just like tethering the option was just hidden. 3.5 includes everything they just keep it hidden just as they are hiding all the mms options for now. Our 5.0 ipcc files included our own settings under CDN settings.
Yeah the mms settings have always been there, I have it working and all the fields(MMSC/PROXY) are blank and it works.

I found something kinda interesting. I installed the 3.5 IPCC file and for some reason cellular data network was still able to be accessed. Well what I saw in there was that the APN for Cellular Data was just "phone" with no username or pass. The visual voicemail APN was acds.voicemail and the MMS settings were blank.
I rebooted and of course the cellular data network panel was gone.

Yeah we kinda knew this cause if you have the 5.0 ipcc file installed you get a different CDN screen than what came with that ipcc and looks like it could be what apple actually put there. I have 5.0 and I can still see the screen and it is different than the one that was seen on previous betas with this ipcc.

I posted this in the ipcc problems thread, but it may be more relevant here.
I am on the Family Unlimited text plan
Updated beta 5 and iTunes from the b5 release bundle
MMS icons went away (expected)
Added the .ipcc file using my wife's MBA with the first iTunes 8.2 from beta 4
Got the MMS icons back
Still can't send MMS. I was able to do so for a day or so right after the b3 release but never reliably. I will try adding the name and password to the MMS settings, but I don't expect it to change anything.
[edit - UPDATE]
I tried turning Airplane mode on and off and when I tried to test it I found the MMS icons were all gone! I checked my settings I found that the Network|Cell Data settings still had MMS related settings but the Messages setting MMS options had disappeared! So had all the icons for MMS in the apps! Looks like they are really taking steps to keep us out of MMS.

One thing in addition to adding the user and pass(I don't use them and mine works, always has), but you could reset your network settings. This seems to work, most of the time.
Update- From what up10ad says ^^ DO NOT USE AIR PLANE MODE

Ok this is wierd!! Do you do still have 5.0 carrier under about? I haven't experienced this but I guess you could reapply the 5.0 ipcc using your wife's MBA.
Personally I don't see the problem with us using mms, tethering I could see at&t having a fit about but mms is either included in out sms plan or the people who kept their iphone sms plans are paying $.30 an mms.

Wow, maybe once it is gone then it is permanent until they give it the go ahead. On the NextGeniPhone thread there was a rumor Indy posted which said that 3.0 may be coming out earlier than the new phone in july, so maybe June 8th(WWDC) or not long after we will see it with full mms support. And with this odd update timing makes it look like they are working the kinks out for a release soon. Plus they just announced that all submitted apps have to be able to work on 3.0 or they will probably be rejected. A lot of rambling on, but just saying it looks like we may see a final release soon.

Everything sounds good for it to work, the only thing you may need is for at&t to provision you. I left all my settings "as is" and it has always worked. If you can get your hands on a mms capable phone, put your sim in there and see if it works. Also you could reset network settings and see if that helps.

I got MMS working today for the first time. First attempt today. I am on 3.0 beta 5 with an IPCC from earlier that allows MMS settings.
1. Switched SIM into Samsung Blackjack 2.
2. Called AT&T and had them change me to an Unlimited Messaging Plan.
3. Restarted Blackjack 2. Text messages were sending and receiving fine, but not pictures.
4. Called AT&T back. They had me try the internet and that wasn't working either. They transfered me to tech support and he did something that made the internet work.
5. Picture messaging was now working on the Blackjack 2.
6. I switched the SIM back into my iPhone.
7. Turned the phone off (Power Off) and back on 3 times right in a row.
8. Picture messaging was not working on the iPhone.
9. Airplane mode toggled on and off multiple times.
10. Picture messaging now working on the iPhone.
All of this was done tonight because I decided I wanted it, so it can still be done.
Let me know if you have any questions about my process.

If you look back at the steps at how I got mine working, when I put my SIM in a BlackJack phone, the picture messaging and internet never worked in it, but at least 24 hours after I put it back in my iPhone, MMS was working. This leads me to believe that as along as you attempt to send them as well as make a few phone calls, there is obviously something this process does to overwrite part of the SIM card itself to unlock MMS when it's in the iPhone.

I forgot to add this in, but they actually changed the IMEI on my account to the Blackjack. The Internet or picture messaging wasn't working so I called back and told them I wanted it working. They fixed it after about 20 minutes.

Yeah, the rep you got didn't know what she was talking about. The iPhone Data Plan is completely separate from the iPhone Text Plan. All that has to be done is change the iPhone Text Plan to a Non-iPhone Messaging Plan, which is the same price if they're both unlimited. Either the lady was completely clueless or that is what AT&T reps have been told to deter MMS beta activation.
JustinCarpenter
05-14-2009, 08:19 PM
Ok, so when changing the IMEI to another phone, it automatically gets rid of the iPhone data plan and adds pay per use Internet. I had $200 in Internet usage charges. So don't change the IMEI on your account. Just try and get the rep to add the unlimited plan.
Watcher

Okay, I just pulled up my plan on AT&T online. While what I mentioned was correct in that's what I told my rep to do, this is what is listed on my account right now under Voice & Data Usage under the Data tab:
Internet/MEdia Net
UNLIMITED
Used 80.47MB of Unlimited
Messaging
UNLIMITED
Used 522 of Unlimited
All I know is if you have the above unlimited plans, there is no way they can get away with charging you extra for MMS!!! They wouldn't even have a legal leg to stand on.
