Quick question that need a quick answer please. Since the SDK release Apple made it appear to me that "anyone" can develop apps for the iPhone...yeah "..so easy, a cave..." yeah you know the rest...well, another source just emailed me and informed that "Even though they make it seem so easy, you definitely have to be a programmer..." ...is this accurate?

Since there is no Apple program called "iDevelop", it does help to have some background in Xcode and Cocoa, and so on, for the iPhone.

If you want to learn it, give it a try for $99 with the 3.0 SDK. You could try it for free with 2.2 SDK, I think...

AS far as I know, the $99 fee has always been the same - on 2.x and now for 3.0.

You have always been able to download the SDK and other useful resource materials for free. The $99 fee is to join Apple's developer program, become an 'authorized developer' kinda thing, and gives you the right to submit apps for App Store approval and run them on an iPhone device.

I believe if you don't pay the $99, you can only run apps you create on a simulator, not on an iPhone device.

Devs can jump in and correct me - but that is my understanding ...

thanks for the info...but you still have to be a programmer correct? ...i don't have any experience as a programmer...so how would i benefit from the SDK...

Well ... yes that might well help, or be someone who is willing to learn to program in the necessary languages. If you're looking for a way to create an iPhone app without any programming knowledge, there are some services out there that offer to connect people with app ideas to devs who will quote for creating them - can't recall names though.

Getting back to your original question, I'm not a dev, but I think it's safe to say it is not so easy a caveman could do it, at all. And if you don't have any programming experience the SDK is obviously of benefit because it is an excellent reference and learning tool if you are willing to put the time in. No offense, but maybe it'd be an idea to look at some pages of Apple's covering the SDK - for instance the listing of main content areas:

I don't know how much iPhone development requests there are on this but elance.com is one. It's kind of like eBay but for freelance professionals.
