Hello All,
I tried to restore my 3g from 3.0 to 2.2 last weekend and i was told by a apple rep that it cannot be done. So loged on EIC today and i see that there is a way. But I can't get my 3g into restore mode. I was wondering if someone would allow me to call them to get some real tech help. Or call me?
Please I am in crisis.
Eric

Holding down power button plus home button for 10-15 seconds, then releasing power button and continuing to hold home button has worked through every generation of iPhone I can think of.
Might save yourself some phone time by giving that a good few tries, if you haven't done already ...

You have to select the .ipsw file to install. If you downloaded the 2.2 FW .ipsw file, you have to tell iTunes to use that file to restore.

You have to select the .ipsw file to install. If you downloaded the 2.2 FW .ipsw file, you have to tell iTunes to use that file to restore.
Exactly - and to do that ...
On a Mac, hold down the Option key while clicking Restore, and then select the .ipsw file
On Windows, hold down the Shift key while clicking Restore etc.
Oh, and in that Gizmodo downgrade guide post there were links for .ipsw files for both the V1 iPhone and the iPhone 3G - make sure you downloaded the right one for your phone ...

Your screen should be black when in DFU mode. You shouldn't see any graphic on the screen at all.

There are several suggested fixes for Error 1604 in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=394721).
Easiest - so worth trying first - are things like try putting the iPhone on a different USB port or try just double-clicking the .ipsw file with iPhone attached to the PC - but there are quite a few others in that thread as well ...

Why are you restoring to 2.0? Restore to 2.2.1, you will not be able to unlock even after you restore, cause you will keep the 3.0 baseband. No way around it, so...
1 - Open iTunes
2 - Get your iPhone in DFU mode
3 - Select restore iphone (using the original 2.2.1 firmware, not a custom one), you should not need to do anything but hit the restore button, if you never installed 2.2.1 prior to upgrading to 3.0 it may update first.
4 - Let your iPhone do the restart process until you get ERROR 1013
5 - Close iTunes
6 - Open Quickpwn. you will get a message saying to hold power and home for 15 seconds.
7 - Turn on your iPhone by holding power button for 2 seconds, close quickpwn
8 - Open iTunes and your iPhone is recognized and activated
9 - You can now continue to jailbreak, if you would like.

when i did upgrade for 2.0-2.2 i always saw a progress bar on the iphone as it was installing the software but all it shows is an apple.

3.0 is a beta version, did you purchase this phone from someone in the last week? 2.2.1 is the latest version of the software you can get through iTunes.

You're doing fine on all of that - that's all as prescribed for the downgrade from 3.0.
Baseband shouldn't be a worry for you in terms of resolving this issue and getting 2.2.1 running.
Baseband refers to the phone's modem version and the 3.0 upgrade also updated that and that process is not currently reversible - not hugely relevant to you right at this moment unless you need to 'unlock' your phone - meaning make it usable on a non-authorized cellular network (i.e someone other than AT&T in the US). If you don't need to do that, don't worry about that piece for now ...

i have the plug into itunes on the display..
Then you're in restore mode, not DFU mode. You need to make sure that you're in DFU mode.

OK, just follow the instructions, and tell us exactly where you get stuck (if you do) and what error message it gives.

To get your phone in DFU mode
Attach the phone to the pc
Turn the phone off
Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

ok i will try it.

It will take awhile to restore, right now it's just preparing the phone for it. Just remember you ARE expecting an error, the one your looking for is 1013 just follow the steps.
erhalt1
03-30-2009, 10:49 PM
now at about 1/2 on the status bar
erhalt1
03-30-2009, 10:50 PM
will the error come up before it shows a full install?

03-30-2009, 10:51 PM
i have error 1013

Glad it worked out for you, erhalt1. There's nothing scarier (concerning the iPhone, that is) than trying to manipulate firmware revisions - especially beta ones.

it is working great, thankyou guys so much this is why EIC is the best it has the nicest and smartest people here! You all have been so kind, truly thanks..............I am back on regular 2.2.1, I will never make that mistake again of trying a beta program. I really thought that Apple would be further along with it, but it has so many bugs. I thought they would update the beta faster as bugs were reported............Oh well I am grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks

I'm not having that much trouble with 3.0, erhalt1. What sort of problems were you having?
erhalt1
03-31-2009, 11:52 AM
I found the beta version to be really hard on the apps part. Sometimes my 3g would start playing music without me touching it. The dial screen (i would enter the number and it would go black and back out to the apps) My push email would be 2 or 3 days late. I am just thankful for 2.2.1
thanks again

Wow - I haven't experienced any of those problems.
