I remember the nickel battery days. When you had to drain the battery completly and then charge it to increase the life of the battery. Does this same rule apply to the new lithium ion types? I cant find the answer anywhere.

No you do not need to fully drain and charge these batteries according to apples site you only need to drain the battery completely once a month.
