Hello all,
So i just picked up a new 16gb 3G and just updated it to 2.2.1, I was wondering if you guys think i should update to 3.0?
everyone that has it what do you think?:laugh2:

It is cool for a few hours, but then gets old. The bugs are not that bad, but phone has to be restarted about once a day. I would recommend waiting till at least another version of the beta comes out.

I would wait. It's not bad for a beta, but it is buggy, and unless you feel like dealing with the hassle of updating as new every time a new beta comes out, I wouldn't bother.

If you do update, be reminded that it's a beta version and that you need to have your iPhone's UDID number registered with the Apple Developers Program first or your iPhone will become an expensive brick.

you just got your phone so everything is still exciting for you, later on down the road when you find yourself craving new functions then update to the beta, by then a more updated less buggy version will be out
enjoy your new phone with no bugs first

I could be wrong, but I think you can only get that by jailbreaking your iPhone, which is frown upon by Apple, and it can void your warranty.

was just in an apple store asked three different managers and four geniuses "will me jail-breaking my phone void my apple care", response no, two managers had there phones jail-broken
last year i brought my phone into the genius bar, having problems syncing, i had a transparent theme installed, they determined the problem was not reparable so they restored my phone tried again, problem continued so they swapped my phone out
go into your apple store ask for a manager and ask if "jail-breaking" not unlocking voids warranty

When I was in the Apple Store, there was a statement in a display behind the Genius Bar saying, basically in a nutshell, "We will not service devices that have been jailbroken." I don't know what is up with the Apple Store by you, but Apple officially announced this a while back.

Seriously, don't give people the idea that they can take their iPhones in for warranty repair/exchange with it jailbroken. You indeed have an odd store near you if this is the case, as it is strictly spelled out as forbidden in every store I've ever been in. If you do show up with it jailbroken, they'll mark it in their system so you never get service, even if you restore.
Just wanna be clear on this.

I showed up with it simply on 3.0 and they said my warranty was temporarily void, so why would adding something that was not made by apple be ok? There is a reason you cannot make the changes on the iphone like you can with jailbreaking, apple does not want you to. This was big news a few weeks back where they said it was a breach of your contract.

I would wait for a more stable beta release. I updated and rolled back to 2.2.1, mostly cause I didn't want to get caught out somewhere when the current beta expiered. I think, unless it already is, you will find it difficult to get MMS enabled on your account. If you do, or MMS is already enabled, you can use swirlyMMS to MMS without updating.

I tried to use swirlymms but none of the settings got it to work. Does this mean I need to call AT&T and have them change my plan or what?
Also do I need to run insomnia to get it to work or will it automatically go into swirly when I recieve it?

I use swirlyMMS and have never used insomnia or backgrounder etc....You will get a notification in swirly (just like an sms in the text app) when you open swirly it will connect to the server, from there you can download your message.
Your account is not provisioned for MMS, so none of the settings will work (so it wouldn't work with 3.0 either). If you can get a rep at AT&T to switch you to a regular messaging plan, you should be able to reboot and get it working, with pretty much any of the preloaded AT&T settings. If the rep is not helpful, you can try tricking the system.
1) put your sim in an MMS capable (AT&T compatible) phone.
2) Power up the the phone, make some calls on it, send some texts.
3) Go to your OLAM (Online Account Manager)
and see if it's updated to the new phone, if it has...you can probably change your features to a regular messaging plan.
4) put sim back in iPhone (reboot, if it wasn't turned off to begin with)
5) MMS should work in swirlyMMS

TAEWING509 was posting he still had slots open. It's still a beta, but this second version (so far) runs just as well, better in some (most) aspects as 2.2.x. Some apps don't work properly, but they were designed to run on the 2.2.x firmware.

Mms seems to work for everyone who did NOT update their carrier settings with a hack during the first beta. Is the beta 2 clean restore still reading the ipcc file I left on the computer? I manually updated my phone with the apple official one and tethering didn't even show up then which is not right, because that showed up for regular devs who never did the ipcc hack. Its like secretly somehow apple blacklisted everyone who did ipcc hacks. What are we missing? I put backed the hacked ipcc file for now and have the tether screen, but notice the area to put in wap gateway doesn't show on the phone? No MMS working for me.
My buddy sitting right here went from 2.2.1 to beta 2 has mms and tethering and would no how to edit the ipcc if his life depended on it.
We both have 100% identical iPhone text message single user accounts with numbers in the same area code. Its obvious apple did something to phones where people change carrier settings that no amount of clean restores seems to fix. And yes I've tried my buddies carrier setttings from iTunes. I'm guessing there is something in the encrypted parts of beta 2 ispw file.
Anyone care to test further?
shutter13
04-01-2009, 04:52 PM
OK, I used the ipcc hack, on beta 1, I do not have anywhere I can edit the apn, username or password for the network or a tethering option, but MMS works just fine, send and receive. I have not added the hacked ipcc file for beta 2, there was no need.

Yes but you called up at&t or did the sim hack right?
If I take my phone virgin and reinstall 3.0 beta 2, it won't even show tether options anymore. But if you take another iphone that's never had hacked ipcc files and install 3.0 beta 2 it will show tether and the other goodies.
I think apple did something to people who modified the carrier settings the first time around, because I can only see the tether options, by applying the ipcc hack in beta 2. Otherwise my beta 2 install won't show them no matter how many times i reinstall.
I think there is a new hidden att_us.ipcc file inside the 3.0 beta 2 .ispw file, but we can't decrypt the DMG so there is no way to find out at this point.
Would really like to know why never modified ipcc, similar same 3g phones with exact same config get everything working in 3.0 properly
and why my virgin phone phone that did once host a hacked ipcc file does a different install than when we do clean restore on my friends phone.
It doesn't add up unless apple specifically did something to people who modified their carrier settings.

So, let me get this straight... Will getting the SwirlyMMS app make MMS work with the 3.0 beta? Or is there something else you did like get a rep to provision MMS on your account some time ago which made this work now for you?

My account has been provisioned for MMS since a week after I got my iPhone. If your account is not provisioned to use MMS (either an iPhone text plan with MMS and WAP push turned on or simply a regular messaging plan) nothing is going to make it work. MMS is being blocked at AT&T. How can you tell if your acount is provisioned for MMS? Put your sim in a MMS capable phone and try to send a message, if it doesn't work...your problem is at AT&T, if it does work your problem is on the iPhone.

No. because you can't call the carrier and ask to have the regular account change.
I'm going to say this politely would you please get out of this thread? This is being used for discussion of iphone 3.0 beta 2 official MMS app, and settings, not discussing of swirly or other stuff that the rest of us have moved on from years ago. USE the search tool and read some other threads, it's really frustrating to be working a problem and have you popup with your "can i get a dev account", "what about swirly" on the thread about officlal mms stuff.
Please with a cherry on top :-)

Okay well that clears that up, still doesn't explain why phones that had ipcc hacks in beta 1, act different in beta 2. When I installed beta 2, i did a clean install, and when the phone came back up (yes beta 1 had ipcc hack) it didn't show tethering or anything that was showing up for all devs now with beta 2.
Like i said this leaves me to believe during restore the iphone beta 2 checks to see if you have modified your carrier settings and does something different to you.
I guess the way I could stop this would be to erase & wipe from the iphone (not itunes) everything which could take 2+ hours, and then reinstall the beta 2 ipsw file to see if suddenly mine shows up like normal people who never changed carrier settings.

Actually this thread is about the merits of updating from 2.2.1 to 3.0 and has gone so off topic it should probably be closed. There is an MMS thread for 3.0 beta 2 (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-software/at-and-t-mms-is-now-working-45668.html). Maybe this conversation should make it's way there.

seriously stop preaching about forums, just be a polite person and talk about swirly somewhere else? You're right there is nothing wrong with being polite which is why I nicely asked you to post it in a different thread so we could focus on the task at hand.
Please? in the spirit of being helpful and getting the best use of the forums. As far as forums go there are no "laws" that's why we police ourselves, because we are intelligent enough to not need a moderator to step in every 5 seconds.
I could be a total jerk and just contact the admin I know… but I'm not trying to, I'm trying to ask you to help me out :-)

Start replying on some of the other threads and I'll follow you in a bit and see if I can help you with the things you want setup on your phone.

Anyway, I have not seen much posting about tethering options or mms (ie; apn, username, password) options on beta 2. I have read where lots of devs immediatly applied the hacked ipcc file and stated it still worked. Would be nice to see others weigh in on that account.
