are there any aim apps that allow you to close go back to the home screen and alert you without using this whole push im thing?
Beejive is the best, also the most pricey. I use Palringo which does mostly the same thing. Close it out, and it will email you if you have any IM's.
Aol will text you if you want, but emails are cheaper, and will get to you immediately if you have it set to a yahoo email address.
Palringo is free.

There arent any clients that will notify you of IM's while the App is closed that just show a pop up. It will be an SMS or Email notification.
I use BeeJive usually for Mobile IM
