View Full Version : App Store update weirdness

Both me and the wife have been noticing a lot of strangeness with App Store updates lately, both on the phone and on the desktop. We keep getting update indicators for apps we've already updated. On the phone, sometimes closing the Appstore app and going back will show a different number of apps to be updated. Sometimes opening and closing the app repeatedly eventually shows, accurately, "no new updates".... but not always.

We've both synced fully with backup and it's still doing it. Any ideas?

I've had the same problem the past few weeks. Just last night said I had 5 apps to update, but when I went to try to update, nothing was in there.

Yep, I've had this for about 2 weeks now. Kind of random. Exiting usually fixes it.

For me rebooting the phone works as well.

Same problem here. It is intermittent, and I can live with it (I think).

I've been seeing all of those same issues for the last several weeks. Sometimes rebooting the phone helps - but only for a little while. Sometimes after a sync things seem better - but again only short term.

More often than not, Updates seems to show crap / inaccurate info - very annoying ...

I get weird updates from both the App and from iTunes. I usually just try and control everything from iTunes and it'll go away after a few days.

But then also come back again in a few days??? (that's my experience)

Exactly. The same set of Apps I just updated will say I need to update them again. The same Apps each and every time. I just keep saying update.

The thing is that the second time I "update" nothing appears in the "Download" section on iTunes so I don't think it is actual downloading the updates again.

I've actually had desktop iTunes tell me that my update page information is outdated and to "refresh". I could find no way of doing this other than restarting iTunes.

They're definitely tinkering with something over there...

Tinkering being synonomous with 'buggering up severely'

no clue. I had six earlier. So i updated them all at once. Then all the sudden the phone stops working. Screen freezes cold turkey! After I did the reboot I get the ugly picture with Itunes logo with the USB connection. I had to do a total restore. Boy was I not a happy camper!

This has been happening to me since last week. I update and then the same ones come back when i go back into the App store on the phone. The number will change from 5 to 7 then i know i actually have two new ones to update. I go through all of them to make sure it says Installed and then I do an update on the ones that are new. But now this is happening to me every day. I hope whatever update they have coming up is a really really good one. This is a little annoying.

This has been happening to me also for a few weeks, but there is one game app in particular that refuses to update even though it says update available, I keep getting an error message when I try whether it's on the phone or computer.

Thank god! Thought my phone was on the way out... It's been driving me nuts! Had 5 to update the other day and then they just disapeared.

Ok, so safe to say it's universally experienced. Anyone have a particular list of apps that aren't working? Maybe we could narrow it down to a couple bad eggs.

I have always had issues with Aurora Feint updating. I got the original when it was released and now it says I only have the Lite version. I'm not sure if this happened to everyone but this app constantly gives me update issues.

I'm having all these same issues plus, twice now I've gone through the motion of updating on the phone and then sync my phone and the app doesn't sync over. I go back to the app store on the phone and it shows the update needs to be downloaded...as in it doesn't say "installed" like it would if I had already downloaded it.

Weirdness.

Add me to the list, too. I've had this problem ever since the app store came out. Drives me nuts. I don't understand the date next to the app that needs to be updated either. Is that the date the app was released? Date of last update? Date of this update?

I'm experiencing it too. I compared the update version in the Appstore to the app version I already have on my phone. The Appstore update apps are older versions of what I have on my phone. Weird!

My problem is mostly with Reel Deal Slots.

not only are they saying i need to update apps that i dont, they are saying i should update them to versions that have already passed. Aim for one, says to update to 1.4.1, and when i go into it, it says already installed. It is horrible. really annoying.

Around Me
Fuzzle
NY Times
Ebay
Office Stretch
iLuv Bubbles
Camera Bag

Above is just a list of some of them. Okay, right as I was remembering this list, I decided to select update just to see what the App store had for me and now I have 10 updates! WOW!! Here is the list and next to it I put weather or not it states installed and the update dates listed under the App.

iPump Office Stretch INSTALLED update date 2/14/09
iLuv bubbles INSTALLED update date 2/21/09
Photogene INSTALLED update date 12/2/08
Around Me INSTALLED update date 10/22/08
Streaks INSTALLED update date 12/31/08
Worldbook English Dictorionary INSTALLED update date 2/6/09
NY Times INSTALLED update date 12/21/08
Bee Cells INSTALLED update date 2/24/09
Labyrinth Lite Edition INSTALLED update date 7/6/08
reMove Me INSTALLED update date 7/21/08

All of those are listed as needing update, but the update dates are old and all of those updates have been installed.

I know sooner or later they are going to get this together. I hope a great big old update is coming for iTunes!!

I'll add Feeds, Tweetie, and Things - but I strongly believe this is not specific to a small (or medium or large) number of apps - but is more of a chronic problem with Updates in general. I've seen a comical / farcical example this morning - I updated gCalWall around 10 minutes ago, and it is listed when I just opened Updates to get ready to post here.

There are a number of threads on this in the Apple Support discussions forums as well - including this one (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9100680#9100680) with a suggested fix that nobody seems to have tried ...

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't bother me enough yet, nor am I bored enough today to try all that. But if it comes to that, I will. :foot:

I feel about the same - and also found some of the steps he listed look maybe Windows specific, or at least I do not see the same items as the poster of the suggested fix ...

Does this issue have anything to do with whether or not the iPhone is jailbroken? Is this affecting a specific firmware/jailbreak version?

Everytime I check for updates, I get a different response.

Seems like it can affect anyone who uses the App Store, jailbroken or not.

Not sure on the firmware - I know I'm on latest firmware and definitely seeing the issue ...

I have the same issue. Their is 21 updates but they don't need to be updated at all. Like it says I need to update Ambiance to 1.5.2 I think, but right now Ambiance is 2.0.whatever...

I never jailbroken this iPhone or unlock or whatever.

Do we know if Apple know this issue.
If they are working on it.
Or is there a way to send bugs like that to their dev team?

I have this same issue. As a note I should add that my App Store would normally only ask for my password before the download of an app. Now my password is requested at random times. Anyone else experience this?

I haven't seen that at all. Always a little disconcerting when requests for passwords are made at unexpected times ...

I'm using this weirdness to help me cure my O.C.D. when it comes to updating my 3g.

Until yesterday it was the first thing I did when I got up in the morning and the first thing I did when I got home at night from work.

It gets worse....because once I do an update I must sync....without fail. Must! Must! Must! :gasp::gasp::gasp:

I do all this in the morning and I get farting around and end up running late for work....madness I tell you!

My new plan is to only check for updates on Friday afternoon when I get home from work. This is when I typically do my Macbook backup and check for any software updates.

Thank you for hearing me out doctor! I'll pay the receptionist on the way out! :laugh2:
