2006 A6

numerous messages here and on Apple forums about Audi.

It works for me only if I leave the phone screen on (i.e. I turn off the option named auto-lock). When the phone goes to sleep, it turns off Bluetooth. So, keeping the phone on keeps it working. Contacts, dialing, receiving calls... all work.

Yup - same problem for me with my A4. But actually, mine goes off and on. The music pauses, I hear the dong, then a few minutes later, same thing. Very annoying. My Razr was perfect with this (although not so great beyond that).

Looks like it is powering down, and a car charger should do the trick:

I'm having trouble getting my iPhone to even find the BT connection in my 2007 Q7 (just keeps searching). Anyone else having this problem?

I had to screw with mine a bit to do this the first time. Try shutting BT off on the phone, powering up the car (after it has been off for five minutes - I think the car is only discoverable for the first bit of time after it's been turned on) then turning BT on, and watching for the Audi. Worked for me.

As far as the larger problem, how is this nonsense possible? Did Apple not beta test any of this?

Mine keeps disconnecting also but as I've read I can get a car power adaptor to change that.

One more thing:

Is there a way to get rid of or edit my contacts in Outlook so that it's not showing on they RNS-E screen the following information.

Joe Blow (123) 123-1234 (Mobile) Mobile

It seems to be doubling up on the type of call. I'd rather have it just show the name, number and what type of number it is. (mobile, home, business, etc.)

Does anyone know of a way to edit my contacts so that it doesn't show up like this on the nav screen?

dongtea
07-15-2007, 08:32 PM
In furtherance of the last question, is there also any way to get the addresses into the RNS-E so that I can use them for navigation?

Also, I got a car adapter and it does the trick on the Bluetooth front, although it's a pain to remember to plug my phone in each time I jump in the car. I hope Apple gets this fixed.

One more data point on this: it seems that if I plug my iPhone in before I put the key in and start the car, I don't get a Bluetooth connection. I have to wait until the car is on and the Bluetooth gets recognized, then plug the iPhone into my car charger, then all is fine.

I got the car charger for iPhone from ExtremeMac and don't have this problem. I plug in the FM transmitter (in headphone jack), charger and then start the car and it all works.

OK - I haven't tried it too many times yet, but I think that the new update has fixed all of my Audi-BlueTooth issues.

I was having all kinds of issues and I kept having to turn BT off and on, and change passwords, etc. But now it's been just fine, with or without being plugged in while I'm driving.

I've got my fingers crossed.

Are you doing anything special? All I see on that screen are the directory assistance, PayBills etc. Do you think it has to do with how you downloaded the contacts? Mine went through the Apple address book. What about you?

Mine also came from the Apple address book.

As I recall, entries from the address book that did not have a phone number (or a number in the right place) do not appear on the Audi screen.

so, for example, address book items that are there only for street addresses, email addresses, etc. do not show up.

otherwise, the items that have a phone number show up and I can dial them, etc.

They still don't come up. I have an 2005 Audi A6. I was able to get my Palm treo to work, but so far no luck with the IPhone. Any more advise?

I set up a group in my Address Book called iphone. I put only the entries I needed and made sure they had phone numbers in the WORK field. I then told iTunes to sync only that group. Beyond that, nothing special.

did you try changing output to BT?? while in voicemail menu, there is an option in the upper right, I think labeled output. it has a selection for BT Audi.

It doesnt give you that option when you use visual voicemail only during normal calls or actually calling your voicemail box number. I believe you can press and hold to "1" button on the keypad also.

I've the iPhone paired and fully functional in my car (2005 A6 w/ 2007 software). It reads the phone book, missed/dialed calls etc. The only thing it doesn't do is transfer the character (+) before the country code that my contacts have. For e.g. my Apple Address Book is setup with +44 for a contact in the UK. When synced with the car it leaves out the + which is very annoying. The number is correct in the iPhone though. Can anyone try and confirm this?

The issues I've been reading are mostly Audi MMI software related. I have (in Europe) version 3460 and the iPhone is on 1.02.

I am purchasing a used Audi A4 this week. As part of the transaction, the Dealer has agreed to install a new Audi iPod dock in the glovebox (the car already has the Navigation system with SD cards - the ipod dock would replace the 6 CD changer).

I was all excited to have full integration of my iphone and Audi but then began reading some reviews on this site which have me a little concerned.

Two questions I was hoping I could get guidance on.

1. Has anyone used the iphone with the Audi ipod dock to play music? Will it display the name of the songs or just playlist 1 - 5 as some reports show (making its usefullness versus just using the SD cards included with Navigation system questionable)?

2. Does anyone have any experience with the reception ability of the iphone if it is in the Audi's glove box? Dealer assures me there is no deteriation, but I find that hard to believe.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Whether or not iPhone's playlists will display on the system depends on the Audi kit - basic Concert sound system will not (mine does not display it). Bose systems do, as I have seen it function.
Reception is good from the glove box.

Hi,

I've a new iPhone (with the last software version -1.1.4-) and it seems that the BT sync. of my iPhone PhoneBook as an issue. It synchronises only the phone# but not the names and not the PhoneBook. So I've the missed calls (only the phone numbers without the names), the incoming calls (only the phone#), etc... But no access to the PhoneBook (it's in gray in the green MMI Telephone Menu). How do I sync. my PhoneBook with my Audi ? I would like to have access to my iPhone PhoneBook through the MMI interface and the dashboard, and see names instead of phone numbers... Any idea ?

Does anybody know if Audi has a patch or upgrade available from an 06/07/08 Audi model that can be used to make it work... or does the upgrade/patch come from Apple?... or any solutions that you might think would work?

I'm having the same problem with my iPhone on an Audi A6 2006. But I think it is a problem with the car and not the iPhone coz I tried other phones with the same result.

Do you have an integrated phone in your car?

Mine comes with an integrated phone (an actual phone inside the armrest).

Anybody has an integrated phone and managed to get his phone to connect to the MMI?

Can anyone play their voicemail through their Audi Bluetooth? Mine seems to default to the Audi, but it doesn't play through the speakers - nor does the radio stop.

I've always been able to just hit "audio" and then choose "iphone" but now that July 1 has come, and I'm in California, I can't really do that anymore. Speakerphone for me?

The iPhone 3G is NOT COMPATABLE with Audi's Bluetooth implementation (i.e., no contacts, and other necessary features).

I had a long and unsatisfying email communication with Audi's 'customer care' folks, who showed absolutely no interest in doing anything to correct the situation.

They insisted they don't advertise any iPhone connectivity with Audis !!!

I'm so surprised at how pathetic the Audi's RNS-E system is. You can't turn off the radio and have it remember that it's off between restarts. Getting to presets is pathetic. Having the Nav default to Map isn't possible.

That's the last time I spend the $$$s for a pre-installed system. Next time, I'll maybe get Bluetooth only, and no other bells and whistles. For the kind of cash this thing costs, I could have a Mac Mini running in my car and a huge LCD screen.

I am from Switzerland, driving a 2004 S4 with built-in Bluetooth (I guess one of the first installations). When I used an iPhone 3G after 4 flawless years with a Nokia 6310i, I was surprised how easily the iPhone synced the contacts (software 2.0), however voice transmission was poor. iPhone software 2.1 improved BT voice connection to built-in handsfree dramatically. Unfortunately, with software 2.2 onwards, contact sync didn't work anymore (dashboard display says "no entries"). I had a lengthy conversation with an expert of the Swiss Audi rep (AMAG) - no solution either.

Happens to me about 75% of the time (so, not always). It lasts about 1-2 seconds and does not seem to honor volume settings (i.e. it is loud).

Yeah - that whole Audi RNS-E is a nightmare. Not to get too far off topic, but here are my gripes:

-Doesn't default to enabling radio presets (you have to change to FM/AM, and press Memory). So using the left and right arrows or the steering wheel controls can't be done until you do this, each time you start the car.

-Can't turn off radio between car re-starts. Unless you turn off the whole computer.

-Nav doesn't default to a map. Can't change that.

-Turning off volume on Nav doesn't really turn it off on the beginning instructions.

-Bluetooth interrupts the radio (on by default, of course) each time you turn on the car to tell you that it's engaged.

Next car, I'm using my iPhone for nav, and skipping this $2000 waste of space.

I was delighted when the new 3.0 software release for the iTouch (2nd gen) included bluetooth. I've tried numerous times unsuccessfully to pair it to my 2005 A6. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get this fixed? The '05 A6 has a bluetooth connection for my phone (blackberry) which works great. It shouldn't be an issue to connect my iTouch as well, but the car won't recognize the connection request.

I don't think the Audi Bluetooth includes a way to stream music. It's really only for phone conversations and dialing.

I will say that in 3.0, I am able to listen to my voicemails through my A4, finally, but I still can't stream music.

You can buy a bluetooth adapter to connect to the Audi MMI and stream stereo wirelessly. I have one on the way via UPS.

Looks pretty cool, but at almost $200, seems a little extreme to me.

What I wouldn't give for a lower-tech car with a simple "aux-in" . . .

I've recently acquired a 2009 Audi A4 Cabriolet final edition (S-line, sat nav BT phone prep ipod connector etc etc) for the mrs and whilst the ipod connector worked reasonably well with my ipod touch (as well as can be expected, it acts as a 6-CD changer with CD's 1-5 being the first 5 playlists on the ipod and CD6 being "all songs"), since upgrading the ipod to version 3, the Audi doesnt seem to be able to recognise the ipod anymore. Has anyone else had this problem?

Since upgrading the ipod I've also acquired a 2009 Audi A3 sportback with an ipod dock, and that doesnt seem to recognise the ipod either. If I leave it for about 5 minutes, it MAY start to play tracks, but not always.

Just got back from the dealer. This really seems to be a problem with iPhone and MMI (Basic, in my 2005 A6). We disconnected my iPhone and connected his (Nokia?) phone and we could see all his SIM contacts and received/dialled numbers WITH names... :dft007:angry

I am glad I found this thread! But my problem seems to be different from the others (I don't need syncing contacts):

It pairs fine and I can make calls w/o issues, but when I receive a call an option screen pops up on the iPhone asking if I want to take the call on the Audi's handsfree, the iPhone's speaker or the iPhone's ear speaker. If I don't select anything it puts the call on the iPhone's ear speaker.

How can I make it to connect automatically to the Audi's bluetooth handsfree?
